Title: Annie E Jones
Post by: Kyffin on Friday 11 December 09 16:56 GMT (UK)
I have searched for years to find info relating to my Grandmother Annie Eliza Jones. Today I believe I have identified her on the 1911 and 1901 census. To my surprise it appears that she was born in Leeds in 1883 ( possibly Wortley WORT/94/397)
By the time she was 18 she was working as a housemaid in Mold, North Wales(which is where I expected to find her) She was a Welsh speaker so I am assuming she had moved to Wales as a child.
I'd like to hear from anyone with interest or info regarding  Jones families in Leeds in the 1880's

Kyffin,
Have you checked out RC Surnames list to see if anyone else is chasing your Smiths?

Go to the top of this page and click on 4th botton from left- Surnames-.
Also a good idea to enter your own Surname Interests there so people can find you.

Good hunting :)

Unfortunately the Surnames bit is not working at the moment.  Being updated as part of the work on the new server.
www.freebmd.org.uk is the first place to look for the birth but there are quite a few possibilities.   Presumably she married so your best bet is to get her marriage certificate to establish her father's name and occupation and go from there.

Thanks Sillgen, yes she married in North Wales in 1915 marriage certificate shows her father as deceased. Infact it shows father deceased for both bride and groom. I've searched for a long time never really certain if I'm looking for Ann, Anne or Annie, is Eliza short for Elizabeth and of course looking for Jones in Wales is a real needle in a haystack. I've recently discovered this Leeds connection and I'm hopeful. As you say there are a few possibilities but at least looking for an Annie Jones in Leeds is a lot easier than looking for Annie Jones in Denbighshire.

Does it name the father though?  If we knew his name was x then we could look for an Annie with father x in earlier census.  His occupation?   Who were the witnesses?   Often they are relations too.

Sorry, No Name given, just the word deceased.

My only clue to a connection with Leeds is a letter written to my mother in 1931. It was from " your loving cousin Kathleen"  If I could find the names of the family living at 68 Dent St, Pontefract Avenue, Leeds in Feb 1931 then it may open new avenues.

I realise that I could probably find this information with a visit to the Leeds records office, but that is not possible at this time.

Regarding the witneses, one was the the Grooms brother, the other was Mary Jones, I agree she was probably related to Annie E Jones

Hi Kyffin,
Perhaps someone could do a lookup in the electoral registers for you or you could contact the archives for them to do the same. Not sure about Leeds, but some archive departments will do a quick lookup for free. ;D

Thanks Sillgen,

Annie Eliza was born 8Feb 1883. Baptist St, New Wortley.
Father, James Jones, Steel Melter
Mother Ann Jones, formerly Edwards. Thats great!! that gives me a link to North Wales.

Now more questions, why were they in Leeds, did Ann go there to work and meet James there. or , were they married in Wales and move to Leeds.

By 1901 Ann is back in Wales as a widow

In 1891 there is a Thomas Jones born Leeds living with Ann's family in North Wales, he might be Annie Eliza's brother.
