Title: Montserrat, British West Indies
Post by: dethompson451 on Friday 11 December 09 16:40 GMT (UK)
Let me throw my hat in the ring as one who is searching for Montserratian ancestors. I can trace those who came to the US and settled in New York, but I don't know where or how to find records of their lives or relatives in Montserrat. Does anyone know what records survived the volcano and where they are? Was there any centralized record-keeping for these small islands. The family names are BOATSWAIN and WEST.

I'm also researching ancestors from Montserrat (my husband's side of the tree), surname Dyer.

@dethompson451 Lovely photo!

@Tjapaltjarri, thanks for sharing link to the library.

Hi Margot -

I am trying to research my Dyer ancestor from Tortola, BVI, with possible links to Montserrat - with very little success so far.   My timeline is the 18th to early 19th century and I was wondering if this might link in with yours.

Regards
Lesley

Hi Lesley,

Thank  you very much for getting in touch.
Unfortunately I'm only starting research on my husband's side and I don't know that far yet but I will keep this info in mind and if I find anything I will let you know. I know they were definitely in Dominica, Martinique and Montserrat, possibly also Curacao and other islands.

Our tree is at http://eurocaribbean.co.uk
I try to update it every weekend with new finds.

Nearly always  government records (if any) are prepared  in British Colonies for Anglos only.I took another look at the 1896 Census of British Guiana and a few Indians from British India are included.

familysearch.org has very few records for Monserrat.

https://www.familysearch.org/search/catalog/results?count=20&query=%2Bplace%3AMontserrat%20%2Bavailability%3AOnline%20%2Bavailability%3A%22Family%20History%20Library%22

I have researched

Hong Kong
British Guiana
Ceylon
Gibraltar
India
Burma
South Africa

British Ceylon is an exception as there are records listing Government employees regardless of race.

However a Baptism, Marriage or Burial in a church should be recorded for all.
