Hello photo restorers and daters. I hope you are all well in the lead up for Christmas and are looking forward to the holiday season. I know I am!
A few weeks ago I was sent the following photograph in a batch of five and I was wondering if anybody could perhaps tell me abit about the clothes these two brothers are wearing. I am trying to establish whether the man on the right is my gt gt grandfather Thomas J Griffiths, who died in 1925 aged 56. I know the man holding...whatever it is he is holding!...is his brother Arthur, born 1873.
Any ideas on a date or maybe a quick edit to erase the fold at the top of the picture would be most welcome and greatly appreciated. You guys do fantastic work and deserve more credit than you get!
Regards and Merry Christmas,
Reayboy :)

Hmm...not much that's dateable in this photo, but as it's in a fairly modern format I'd say slightly pre-1925 is a pretty good bet.
Any chance of a higher resolution scan, say 300 dpi? Also, with a much higher resolution scan of the thing Arthur is holding, 600 dpi or better (draw a box around the object and scan just it) we might be able to tell what it is. Could it be a monkey wearing a flowered shower cap? ;D
Cheers,
China

Best I can do with this resolution. No idea of the date, sorry
-
:D Like your guess China and don't think it is one of your wild turkeys ;) just kidding ... and not sure it is a goat either :P thinking small sheep or pig, has a longish head ... I might be imagining cloven hoof :-\ so probably not dog ...and possibly wrapped in 'something' .... not much help is it! Would only be guessing at a date too sorry Reayboy though would say the men look somewhere around 50yrs :) mare

Looks like he's holding a bundle of sticks of Rhubarb with some parts of the leaves still on.

Hi there
I agree with the previous observer regarding rhubarb but initially I had wondered whether there was a creature being held below like a polecat or a ferret. In the background there seems to be evidence of organised planting.....alotment type ground. Could the background be 'Sugarloaf' Mt close to Abergavenny and not too far from Brecon. It looks like early 1920s and both men have matching 'Dai' caps ...far more common in the valleys than hats.
Best regards
Lyndon

Hi everyone!
Can I please say a massive thankyou to all who have contributed to this thread. Once again I am both shocked and ecstatic at the restoration work you guys do. It truly is a credit to this website and your own talents and time input. So thankyou :)
I am very interested in Lyndon's commets concerning Mt Sugarloaf...I am certain this picture wold have been taken in Abergavenny...all the Griffiths brothers were from there. As for the rhubarb, I will see if I can trace living relatives who may have info through my GR contacts.
As this image was emailed to me...I cannot scan it at 300dpi +. However, I will email te relative who sent the pic to me and ask if he can scan it at say 450??? Would that be ok? I cannot promise anything but have my fingers crossed just as much as you do ;)
Thankyou all so much again for taking time out of your day to bring these brothers back to life that little bit more!
Regards and best wishes over the holiday season!

[Thanks Poll for the comment re colors. ]Good to hear because I have 'tritanopia', i.e. unable to distinguish colors in the blue / green spectrum. I rely on assistance from my dear wife Norma and by remembering position of correct colors for vegetation, sky and water on the various color pallets; a bit challenging but a lot of fun really.
Regards, Morrie

Hi Matt ... you're up late too! Had to get the paints out for this one ...lol ..
Well Morrie... .your Norma is giving you good advice .. ... the greens are excellent ! ;)

Very good versions all :) I have pinched one of yours Poll :-[ to show you where I think the head of the 'rhubarb' is ;) ......excuse feeble attempt :D mare

...said the night wind to the little lamb : ' Do you see what I see ' ::) :D ... and now I'm singing it !

Hi all,
What fantastic restores. I don't know how you guys do it lol.
Please accept my thanks again...I think this will be my gt auntie's Christmas present.
I still cannot work out if this man on the right is my gt gt grandfather...hmm I will have to try and get hold of some of the brothers' pics from later life.
Here is one I have of the brothers. Looking at it I can see the the man holding the rhubarb in the pic posted above (Arthur) is the man sitting down on the left of this pic...

My gt gt grandfather is the man standing up to he right, with the South Africa medal. Do you all think he is the second man in the pic with Arthur on the plantation????
Any thoughts appreciated as always, thanks all for your contributions in this season of Goodwill!
