Title: George Crummett born c1780 but where?
Post by: Luzzu on Tuesday 08 December 09 14:43 GMT (UK)
Hi,

I thought I would have another go a one of my brickwalls.

My 4 x great grandfather was George Crummett.  The first record I have of him is of his marriage to Lydia Lusher on 16 October 1810 in Attleborough, Norfolk. I have his death certificate dated 27 Mar 1877.  He died in Attleborough of brochitis, aged 97 years.  This would put his date of birth at around 1780.

Despite getting on for a 20 year search by myself and a distant cousin, who lives in Norfolk, we have been unable to trace his birth.  In fact a professional researcher in 1989 advised me that having searched Attleborough and surrounding parishes and then counties bordering Norfolk, it was thought the Crummetts moved into Norfolk from another area altogether.

It seems that the 1810 marriage is the first occurance of the name Crummett in Norfolk.

I did try a posting on the Norfolk board a few months ago so I hope the Mods will forgive me for going national on this attempt.

I have traced him on the census.  The 1841 says he was born in county.  The 1851 and 1861 give Attleborough as his place of birth and the 1871 does not state a place of birth.

There are Crummetts in Lancashire (Burnley).  I am descended from this branch of the family.  Between 1861 and 1871, George's son, William (1818-1891) and his wife moved their family from Attleborough to Burnley, I presume to find work as they were a family of agricultural labourers and suddenly they move to Lancashire and are working in the cotton mills.

I am hoping with it being quite an unusual name someone might have come across it in their area.

Has anybody any ideas please  ???

Does the parish record for the marriage give you the names of anyone else? Witnessess etc.,?

I was interested in your problem, so I thought I would check FamilySearch to see how many George Crummet births there were between 1870 and 1810.

None.

I searched just for George Crummet, and found only his marriage record and the baptism of his son, out of almost all the parish records in the UK.

My two thoughts are these. Could he have come from one of the few areas that isn't transcribed on the IGI?

Could he have come from somewhere abroad?

Hi Yashca,

Thanks for your reply and interest.

You would think uncommon names would be easier but this really is a mystery.  It seems that the only occurances of Crummett in England are Norfolk and Lancashire with a few in Yorkshire and I am pretty certain the Lancashire and Yorkshire ones are off shoots from the Norfolk lot.

There are a few Grummett families in England, particularly around Norfolk so I am wondering if he was maybe a Grummett and became a Crummett by accident when he got married  ::).

Re the overseas idea - the only country that seems to come to mind and I am not sure why is Germany.  The name seems as though it might be Germanic to me  ???.

Re the parish record, I don't think we have actually found it.  My cousin found the Banns which were read in Attleborough on 16, 23, 30 Sep 1810 with the marriage on the IGI taking place on 16 Oct 1810.

According to the IGI there were two George Grummets born in England between 1760 & 1800. One in London in 1775, and one in Hingham, Norfolk in 1761. Unfortunately this would mean that George was well over 100 when he died, which seems unlikely.

I tried George Grimmett (and varients) for the same span of years and found 13 records, but all for the counties of Oxfordshire, Gloustershire and Warwickshire.

I'll keep thinking.

Hi
Unfortunately Norfolk is one of the counties that has very poor coverage on the IGI.  There are dozens of parishes that are not on it so it is not a question of "a few areas" not being there.   That does mean searching all around by looking at every parish in the area which presumably is what the professional researcher did.   A long job.
If you are anywhere near an LDS family history centre, or near the SOG library in London then you can get the film of Attleborough and search it thoroghly yourself to see when the first mention of the name turns up and in what sort of record.  Burials are very useful too.
I would certainly include spelling variants such as Grummett.  There are Grummetts in Attleborough as early as 1710 for instance.

Hi Yascha and Sillgen,

Thanks for your replies and your interest in my "problem".

I think the 1810 marriage is the first mention of Crummett in Norfolk

It seems more likely that George became a Crummett by accident as it seems too much of a coincidence that there were Grummetts in Attleborough more than 100 years before the first mention of the name Crummett and a C and G are so similar.

It is a better explanation than George arriving from overseas.  He was only an agricultural labourer after all and it doesn't look like he ventured very far from Attleborough once he was married.

Thanks once again.  I will carry on searching.

James Crummett who lived at 40 Bridge Street, Burnley and who died in 1938 is my great, great grandfather. I understand he had an antique/second hand shop at 40 Bridge Street and his wife, Annie, had a second hand clothing stall on Burnley market. My great grandfather was William Crummett. The Crummetts in Burnley migrated from Attleborough, Norfolk and I am also in regular touch with a distant cousin in Norfolk. Most likely the same relative as you are in contact with because he has probably the most detailed Crummett archive. So would your father be Osborne? That would make you a first cousin to my mother.

Perhaps your ancestor was a Hanovarian soldier and decided to settle in the UK.

Below is one of seven entries in the German telephone book:-

Hi Rena. Thanks for your reply. Will definitely try to follow it through. We have always thought if they did originate from outside UK, Germany would be a good place to start. Luzzu  :)
