Title: Barnard Family Middlesex
Post by: regross on Tuesday 08 December 09 07:51 GMT (UK)
Hi,

I have a Barnard family tree  dating from 1728, it is not complete but the first name is JOHN 1728-1810 , other surnames by marriage are:are Dicksee/Cox, Burges, Abbott, Callow,Carpenter, Vincent, Cronin, Watson, Blake, Yates,

If this 75 year old tree had not surfaced we would have no information on the persons in it at all. We can find very few official records for them until the 1891 census and even the line that is recorded is not the direct Barnard line only that of the famous family that two sisters married into.

My Ann ELizabeth Barnard who married James Abbott a gardener, in 1841 was where all research ended. No parents, siblings etc until we found this tree compiled by her granddaughter in the 1930's and lost until 2008.

Ann was the daughter of John 's (1728) 6th child Thomas1782 who married Sarah Yates,  Thomas's sister Ann 1779 married John Joseph Burges, their brothers Lewis 1778 and Stephen 1776 died in infancy, older brother John 1775 married Sarah Vincent in 1796 and eldest daughter Mary Louise 1773 married Joseph Carpenter  her twin sister Sarah and youngest sister Sussannah b1787 never married.

Most of their children are listed and some spouses and decendents but many are not, and trying to find them has proven impossible. Trying to verify most of the information has proven impossible except for the Dicksee aka Cox line. What we have verified is 100% correct, so we are accepting at prsent af the rest of the information given.

Some marriages are to found on the IGI but none of the children of the marriages are to be found. Can anyone help with this family?

regards

Robyn

Hi Regross

I have just read your thread my grandmothers maiden name was Barnard and they were from Canningtown, London when she was young and then Kent.  She married the Collins family from Kent.
My grandmother Emily Barnard was born 1912 i have her parents that's my great grandparents marriage certificate.  I also have some of the Barnard family tree going back to the 1920's.  Also how they came from the Gumble and Buckley, Eastwood and Lee families dating back to 1853.

If you this is any help to you please let me know.

Happy New Year

Emily,

Thank you for your reply.

In my Barnard tree I have an Emily Barnard b1835 who died 1894 but I think she died unmarried. Her parents were John Barnard b1799 and Amelia Callow who died in 1870.

So far this is the only incidence of the name in my tree but Emma occurs
1805-1806 to John and Sarah nee Vincent,
1807-? to Thomas and Sarah nee Yates
and my great grandfather  had a sister Emma Abbott  1844 mother Ann Barnard.

Do these relate to your researches at all?

regards

Robyn

Hello Robyn

Thank you for replying so quickly.  I have the marriage details below of my G Grandparents.

My Gran Emily Collins nee Barnard born May 1912 died August 1993?

(The marriage of Harriet and John (below) was in March 1912)
Her Mother was Harriet Barnard nee Lee b1887 .  She married John Barnard b1886 in West Ham.
Harriet's father was Alfred Lee, a Dockland Labourer.
John's father was Charles Barnard, a Hawker.

Emily and John's address was the same it was at 69 Martindale Road, Custom House, West Ham.

2 of the witnesses that placed a cross on the marriage certificate was
Emily Lee and Alfred Lee.

When my Gran was young she use to live with her family in Barnard's Yard, West Ham.

Your findings go back much further than mine.  I do believe we have the same Barnard's but at different periods.

Have you any pics at all ?

Hope to hear from you soon
Emily

Emily,

Sorry but I have no photos at all. My Great  grandfather William Abbott emigrated to Australia in 1881  and while I do have photos of him and some of his sister's EllenMary Abbott b 1853 who married John Spain b Kent I have nothing else.

For many many years all we knew about his family was his parents names as given on his death certificate Ann Barnard and James Abbott,

James Abbott was a gardener supposedly born c 1808 in Hatch Beauchamps Somerset but we can find no baptisms in this area at all.

After he married Anne ELizabeth Barnard born in Harrow on the Hill  c 1818 in Lambeth in 1841 he moved around quite a bit before settling in Hampstead.

His children's births were in Anne 1842 in Sunninghall Berkshire(?) Emma in Harrow 1844,  Eliza 1846 Hampstead, Jeanette 1849 Hampstead, William 1851 Hampstead, Ellen Mary 1853 Hampstead, Henry 1856 Hampstead, Alfred 1861 Hampstead, and possibly (not confirmed Jessie b 1862 ?().

In 1881 they were living in 4 Prince Arthur Mews Hampstead.

We have found family members in 1851,1861,1871,1881 and 1901 census

It is quite possible we are looking at different branches of the same family as I have not traced all the marriages for Barnard  males and females.

Occupations for James  were: Gardener or Jobbing Gardener, sons were Captains Valet, errand boy, general labourer, Fr.  Traveller(what ever that is short for), green grocer.

John Spain was also a gardener and he and his wife and children wer also  in 4 Prince Alfred Mews in 1881 for the census.

Do you know how Charles Barnard's parents were?
hope this helps

Robyn

HEllo BArney123,

I am afraid that I can't find anymore about my Barnard line in any records availble online  and as I am in Australia I am restricted to online records.

I have checked what nonconformist ans parish registers I can find online all without any luck.

I keep revisiting incase new transcriptions have been added.

Good luck with your research

Robyn
