Title: Priscilla Sherred - New Forest.
Post by: Paul Caswell on Friday 04 December 09 21:19 GMT (UK)
Hi All,

I've been looking for an excuse to post here and I've finally found one. :)

I'm looking for Priscilla Sherred b1827-1832 depending on census.

I've found her in

1861 RG9/687/57/26
1871 <Nowhere>
1881 RG11/2099/61/25 (as Sheerwood)
1891 <Nowhere>
1901 RG13/1035/114/18

Are there any special tricks you people know of for tracing travellers? Priscilla has me stumped in so many directions. In 1881 she is on a page for the unhoused as a 'Wife' but there is no sign of a father. In 1861 she is nursing 6-month old Edward but again with no father present. In 1901 she is living next doortent to Edward but a widow.

Her eldest son Edward is of particular interest, he is my OH's gt grandfather.

She appears in a couple of websites about Hampshire travellers too. I hope to find a photo one day.  :)

I think she died 1908 Q4 N. Forest 2b 433

The age is out but it's been out all along anyway.

Oooh!! Nice one Judy!  :o Some relatives too! Thank you for that one.

Makes you understand the power of patience - did you notice I posted this 4 years ago?

Where are your Ameys from Judy? I have a whole cluster of them in Haverill, Suffolk.

There's a John Amey marrying a Maria Batchelor in Lymington in 1889. Perhaps this is a second marriage for Maria?

Does the image clearly show Priscilla as the sister of Maria? I do not have access to census images any more.

Arthur is Priscilla's son.

We do have a picture of the 1891 Census.  The typo on her name was mine ..  it is Sherred/Sherrad (hard to read). Happy  to send it to you.
Reads as:
Address: Varley Wood, New Forest, Burley, Southampton
John Amey, Head Married [68] Hawker, Living under canvas in Gipsy fashion b. Horton, Dorset
Maria Amey, Wife [61]  b. Wiltshire, Salisbury
Priscilla Sherred  Sis   Wid [69]  b. Stockbridge
Arthur ditto  Son  [13]  b.  Hants Minstead

*the relationship usually refers to the Head of the Household, but in this case Priscilla is not John's sister.

Our Ameys are all from Dorset -  family tree on Rootsweb World Connect.  Here is the link if you want to have a look.  This John Amey is the only connection to the Sherreds.  We have 3 Court Records for him - goaled for poaching. Crime seems to have been a family trait. He is the Nephew of our John Amey Snr. (transported to New South Wales 1833) and the cousin of his son, also John Amey (transported to Van Diemen's Land now Tasmania in 1838) - seems they were either a wild bunch or in desperate circumstances or maybe both.
