Title: Indo-British Village Welfare Trust - Lottie Camebus
Post by: Bellou on Thursday 03 December 09 22:46 GMT (UK)
My husband's had a fascinating Great Aunt ,Lottie Camebus, was very keen on Indian culture and India and used to travel there regularly. I have the records that she travelled from India by ship to the Uk in 1928, 1938, 1949 and 1958.

I am trying to find out more about her time there. In her original will dated 1963 she mentions a Shri B D Nanda and also the Indo-British Village Welfare Trust . Has anyone heard of that organisation or has any idea where I could find out more about it or the gentleman?

I have recently I found that Mahatma Ghandi wrote to her in 1928 .

Many thanks

Bellou :) :)

I have now been told that Lottie Camebus owned property in India . Is there any way I could look that up? It would have been some time in 1930/50's

Thanks

Bellou :) :)

Hi Bellou,

I've contacted a couple of friends in India with your query and hope to get some answers back soon. I'm just hoping they can help!

So far drawn a blank on all fronts Bellou! I've even put the query on my old school website over in India in the hope that someone might pick up on it. Any idea where Lottie lived in India? It might help narrow the field a little.

Tony

BTW Is that your husband's great aunt on Flickr?

Bellou,

Sorry to say that I've no further info for you! The message on my old school notice board has elicited no reponse worth mentioning. All I can say is that I'll keep monitoring the situation and if anything comes up I'll let you know.

Yes it is Aunt Lottie on Flikr. I was thrilled to find it quite unexpectedly! I have been finding out all sorts of aspects of her life. This side of her life shown in the photo in a Utopian community in Gloucestershire was unknown to the family! So far it is the only photo I have of her but my husband identified her from the photo although she was older when he lived with her !

We don't know where she went in India , although she travelled there in 1929. 1938, 1949 and 1958 as the shipping records show. If only there was an address in the will for the Indo British Village Welfare Trust . If anything comes to light I would be very grateful . Many thanks

I have the dates of her crossings to India
Returned from Bombay to Liverpool 13th March 1929
left UK for Karachi 6th Oct 1937
Left UK for Bombay 7th Feb 1949
Left UK for Calcutta 7th Sept 1957

Doesn't really hep with where she was in India . The letter sent to her referred to in 'The Collected Works of Mahatma Gandhi dated July 13 1928 was sent from Satyagraha Ashram, Sabarmati.
It says 'It is not possible to encourage you to come here' . She obviously took no notice as by 1929 she was returning on the boat to the UK!

I feel sure someone must have heard of the Indo British Village Welfare Trust.

Hi Bellou

I had this response from one of my contacts in India - don't know if it will help, but worth a try

"hi Tony - you might already be aware of a site called www.koi-hai.com (http://www.koi-hai.com) - it is a hangout for old india hands in UK - you might have some luck posting the query there."

Hello
I was fascinated to read about Lottie Camebus. I think we knew her and if it is her, stayed with her in the 60s. Did she live on Birdhurst Avenue in Croydon? I was very young but  remember her and her friend.
Background is that my parents met a lady called Lottie in Ahmedabad at a politician's house (Can't remember who it was as I was very young, he was possibly the chief minister of Gujarat State). By the way, my father was Indian and mother British. Fascinating lady. Not sure how you would find out whether she had a property in India-I don't have any connections there now as I live in the UK.

I have just picked up your message as I haven't been on the website for a long time. Where do you live in the Uk. We are in Brighton.

This is the same Lottie Camebus. She lived in Croydon . My husband John and family lived with her . Lottie was his Great Aunt. Do you have any other memories of her and her life . John remembers she used to wear a sari in the mid 1950's. Thank you .

There are several newspaper articles in the Find My Past database that refer to a Lottie Camebus.

May add some details to your knowledge?
