Title: Mary or Emily DAY ??
Post by: DEVIS on Wednesday 02 December 09 12:11 GMT (UK)
Hi I hope some one can help with this problem I have!

On 25 Dec 1886 in Lambeth, Alfred KING age 23 Shoesmith Father Benjamin KING labourer married:
Emily DAY age 23  Father William DAY labourer.

Census 1891 Wandsworth, Emily age 28 born Gressenhall  and Alfred age 28 born East Bilney Nflk.
I have tracked Alfred`s family in East Bilney but am having trouble with Emily :(

I cant find a birth for Emily DAY in Norfolk for the time period or an Emily with William as father in the Beetly/Gressenhall area.

I did find a Mary Ann DAY on census 1871 age 08 in Gressenhall born Beetley with parents William/RoseAnna DAY!!

In 1873 this mother Roseannna died and the family split up.

In 1881 William the father is lodging in East Dereham and 2 youngest children in Mitford workhouse.

Could this Mary Ann DAY in fact be Emily who changed her name when she married Alfred?

Any help or suggestions more than welcome!  Please :D

Dont know what happened there the page went before I had started lol

Hi
I was going to say, I had a look for you and I cant find any birth for Emily either.
I was just wondering if they didnt register the birth as it was not made a legal requirement until 1874 and she was born just beforehand. Also I looked at Gressenhall  and it was a poor area in those days, I think it cost a few shillings to register a birth so they might not have had the money.
Just a thought

In the 1891, 1901, 1911 censuses is Emily consistent about her age and birthplace?
What was Emily's address from the marriage (and was it the same as Alfred's?)
Who were the witnesses at her marriage?

I can't see either "Emily" or "Mary Ann" in 1881.  :-\
