Hi guys

Im looking into why one of my relatives was an inmate in south shields workhouse and wondered if anyone could tell me how and where I would find this information out?

you don't give dates, but if you have a look at the workhouse site:

you'll find lots of general information about life in the workhouse, and if you enter South Shields in the search box you'll find more on that particular one.

You'll find quite a bit of information here

plus 1881 Census which includes staff and inmates.

Yes that's the same very good website!   :)

If M enters South Shields in searchbox from the link I gave, that's the page that comes up.  It's well worth exploring the whole site as you get a good insight into life in those days
