Title: Is Emma Eveleigh Fred Baptists mother?
Post by: osborn on Tuesday 01 December 09 22:01 GMT (UK)
1901 census
Emma Eveleigh, 39 servant, b. Tower Hill
Fred Ingram, 16, lodger
living with the Weeks family in St. George Hanover Square (Pimlico)

Marriage 28 Oct 1906
Joseph BAPTIST, 30, bachelor, postal servant, 21/22 block sutton street, Goswell Road.
Emma EVELEIGH, 34, spinster, 18/22 block sutton st, Goswell Road.

1911 census
Rooms two.  21/2 block Sutton Street
Joseph BAPTIST, head, 32, M, Coachman (travellers) b. Bishopsgate St.
Emma BAPTIST, wife, 43, M 10 yr., b. Tower Hill
Fred BAPTIST, son, 9, b. Pimlico.

The presence of Fred Ingram may be a co-incidence.  Emma ws born in 1861 although she became increasingly dodgy about her age!

I cannot find any reference to Fred's birth. ( The only date I have is  12 Mar. 1902. )    CAN ANYONE ELSE ??

I do not need to know about Joseph Baptist's and Emma Eveleigh's forebears who are discussed here:

Where did you obtain the date of 13 March 1902? Did Fred have any other names?

Thank you for your reply Nigel.

He was always known as Frederick James BAPTIST.

The birth date of 12th March, 1902 was taken from his British Passport of 1979 number C460808A.  This was when he returned to England for a holiday after he retired.

I have a copy of his Certificate of Identity
                                  No. 18033   Year 1923
                                  Migration & Settlement Office,
                                  Australia House,
                                  The Strand, London.

I have been in touch with National Archives of Australia, but they have nothing.

Any help would be wonderful.......                 Osborn.

Passenger lists for 1947 and 1950 suggest his last place of permanent residence was India (for journeys from Bombay and Brisbane to London). I am assuming these are the correct person and not some other Frederick or F.J. Baptist.

I think that you may have another F.J. Baptist.

My Frederick James Baptist migrated to Australia in 1923.

He returned to England in 1979 for a holiday only.

Did he marry? If yes, whom, when and where?

If he was born 12 Mar 1902 he could have been registered in either Mar 1902 or Jun 1902 quarters (if they didn't register him until the start of April).

The registration district would I think by St. George Hanover Square.

 - I see that on his emigration to Australia he also uses the name "Fred", no "James", does the Certificate of Identity call him "Frederick James"?

A last gasp suggestion would be to look at workhouse records for the area (some for London are now on A* so a bit more accessible than they used to be), in case Fred was born there or other family members were temporarily admitted at any point.

Nigel - Frederick James Baptist married in 1927 in Melbourne, Australia.  I have a copy of his marriage cert. and also his death cert.
It is details of his life I require BEFORE he sailed to Australia in 1923.

Jorose - Thank you for your reply -  On his Cert. of Identity he is just "Fred Baptist".

Hi,

I appreciate that. However, passenger lists and other documents for the period after 1923 may give clues regarding his birth. By knowing the name of his wife it may help in identifying the correct person. You mentioned the F.J. Baptist (born 1903/4) previously located was probably not the correct person.

Places of birth given in a census are not always accurate and it is possible that he was not born in Pimilico.

It is possible, but his likely mother was living there a year earlier in the 1901 census.

Thanks Nigel -  Fred Baptist sailed to Australia on the "Baradine" in 1923.  He was 21 years of age (stated on his P.& O. passengers ticket No. 1304) and paid 33 pound.

He married Dora Lillian Nellie MITCHELL in Melbourne in June 1927.  They had 13 children (none of whom can give any further details re his life before he came to Australia).
He died in Melbourne, 1982.
He always used the name Frederick James Baptist.
On his marriage cert. he (or the registrar) lists his parents as:
Father - Frederick James Baptist
Mother - Emma Eveleigh.
