Hi List,
Received this from Ralph Price from the Rotorua District Council re the above. He gave permission to spread the word.
"I am in the process of completing an on-line cemetery record search for Rotorua District Council Cemeteries.
You can find it at:
http://cem.rdc.govt.nz/CemeterySearch/default.html
You will need Silverlight 3. This is explained when you go to the link above.
Please give us some feedback on how you get on. We are still in the process of capturing all of the locations of the plots and photos of the headstones but hopefully it will go some way to meeting your needs.

I have found three so far but they are in the process of adding headstones slowly so keep checking back to see if they have been added

Miserable. I have seen 10 year olds do similar.

Hello All,
Has anyone made a second visit to this site?
When Newbe first posted the link I visited, downloaded Silverlight, and found some names.
Now I want to search again, but can find no other reference to Rotorua Cemeteries.
If you go to Newbe's link you are asked to download Silverlight, which you can't do because you already have it.
Catch 22?????
Thank you

Hi Jean,
I have just gone and had a look. I put my names in and nothing comes up
Might have to check with the council and see what is going on

Yes.

There is nothing coming up at all with the names I have there
It used to come up with the plot number but not now ::)

Jean,
Why don't you go into Add/Remove programs and uninstall Silverlight and then start again. When I asked the computer to add it to my favourites it saved it under cemetery search., so have renamed it.

I've just done a search - no problems.
Then I came back and re-searched the same surnames with no results. If I put in a new name I get results. I tried to give them the feedback (I'd already given one) on that but that wouldn't send.
Anyway, it is after all a beta program. I think it has great potential.

I have been feeding back to Ralph, via the feedback on the site. He would appreciate people contacting him as to the problems you're having, exactly what you were doing, etc. He is VERY keen to get it right, so here's our chance to put our input in.
Bryan
I have his eamil address if people would like to pm me. He's happy for that.

Hi to all
I have made some changes to the beta application that you might like to try. With Bryan1's assistance I have dealt with one of the searching issues that was occurring due to how the search was done.
Giving feedback more than once in a given session should also be working without problems. The sending of the feedback should be a prompt process with no real delay.
As far as needing to download Silverlight again, this should not occur unless there is an upgrade of the version of Silverlight required and I have only used Silverlight 3 in the development of this application.
One thing to check is that the Silverlight plug-in is enabled in the browser.
How this is done varies according to your browser.
FireFox 3.5.3 for example has it in Tools => Add-ons => Plug-Ins
IE7 has it in Tools => Manage Add-ons => Enable or Disable Add-ons...
For those people who have searched for names and that have not come up, the data is only for those Cemeteries that Rotorua District Council controls plus the crematorium.
ie Kauae
Rotorua
Mamaku
Reporoa
Ngakuru
RDC does not hold records of the various urupa scattered around the District including Whakarewarewa and Ohinemutu.
If there are names that people have searched for that they expect to be in an RDC controlled cemetery then please let me know what they are and I will check as to why they are not being returned.
Please note also that the Search page does not exist as far as the main council website so don't bother trying to find it there.
Thanks for your assistance and looking forward to further feedback

Hi to all
there is now a 'lite' version for those who are restricted in regards to their connection speed at http://cem.rdc.govt.nz/CemeterySearch/default_lite.aspx
Not all of the functionality of the Silverlight version is available but a basic search is available.
The Silverlight version now shows when a plot location code is used more than once and you are easily able to work through and figure out burial order etc.
Please let me know if anyone has any problems

Worked fine for me too. I got my great grandfathers 'co ordinates' *grin* many years back...don't know how though - it was online somewhere, so i thought i would double check and yes it states the same on the site so that's all good. I do however think Rotorua cemetery sucks because i was there last year trying to find his grave [no headstone] and there is not even a mapboard giving a clearer picture if not of the graves then at least the areas. The numbers in the concrete serve to confuse because you just don't know what row they refer to. Does anyone know where i can get a copy of a map of the main cemetery in Sala Street? I'm in Rotorua in a couple of weekends and would like to confirm exactly where the grave is.
It's very frustrating as i'm not a cemetery 'virgin' LOL but i found this one particularly confusing.

Thanks for providing the text-only basic search because I was unable to view the graphics version at all. Connection speed was not my problem — I cannot run Silverlight 3.

Hi Koromo
I was curious as to what hardware and OS you were using? (A Mac of some flavour I assume)
Thanks

Hi Ralph
I'm on a PPC iMac running MacOS 10.4 (Tiger) which is still supported by Apple so it's not that old! Apparently I can run Silverlight v1 but the later versions require a Mac based on the Intel processor.
Never mind. I was pleased to be able to access the cemetery records, and quickly found a couple of family members.
Cheers

Thanks Koromo for letting me know.
It makes for an interesting juggling act as to the systems to cater for. I will put some monitoring on the 'simple' search and search what range of OS and browser end up hitting it.
