My great great grandfather was Samuel Ball 1835/6 born Longbridge Deverill, his father was William Ball 1791, mother Susanna Gibbs, they married in Sept 1830 in Deverill Hill. I am trying to find out who William's father was, from what I have found out his name was Isaac but I am stuck on his mother.
William Ball was born 1791 but I cannot find out when he died, his name is listed on Samuel's marriage certificate in 1858 but I cannot find him on the 1851 or 1861 censuses, Susanna is on 1851 as living with Samuel and his brother William. She then disappears after that and I am wondering when she died.
Any help would be great.

Hi Cowpig,
Susanna is listed as a widow in 1851.
Have you ruled out this death?
William Ball - Jun 1846 - Warminster 8 292
Susan is still at Longbridge Deverill in 1861 RG9/1305 28 13
There's a possible death
Susan Ball - Dec 1864 - Warminster 5a 98
:)
PS There's a member-submitted IGI record showing William's parents as Isaac Ball and Elizabeth Pain - have you followed that trail yet? Extracted IGI marriage:
Isaac Ball - Elizabeth Pain, 6 Aug 1780, Deverill Longbridge

Thanks Tati,
I may have been leading everyone up the garden path, Williams birth should read 1796 not 1791.
The fact that he is listed on Samuel's marriage certificate is confusing me, one other marriage certificates I have if the father has been deceased is states that.

The Longbridge Deverill parish register has the following baptism:
16 Oct 1791 William BALL - son of Issac and Elizabeth
There is no baptism for a William BALL in Longbridge Deverill in 1796 (if you have obtained the year from the 1841 census the ages will have been rounded down to the nearest 5 years so that 1791 is correct).

Further information from the Longbridge Deverill parish register:
Baptism -
25 Aug 1754 Isaac BALL - son of James
Burial -
20 Apr 1828 Isaac BALL - age 73

In case you don't have the following information from the parish records for Hill Deverill:
Baptisms -
30 Jun 1833 William BALL - son of William & Susan, labourer - born Longbridge Deverill
14 Dec 1834 Samuel BALL - son of William & Susan, labourer - born Longbridge Deverill

Many thanks Nigel,
Would a marriage certificate state the father's name on it even if they were deceased? I have one for my grandfather on my mother's side whereby it states he was deceased when he son married. This is what is confusing me regarding the date of death of William as he is named on the marriage certificate of Samuel in 1858 (this marriage took place on Portland in Dorset).

Yes, a marriage certificate will usually have the name of the father (unless the person was illegitimate) even if deceased. It may or may not indicate that the father is deceased. It simply depends on what information the Groom or Bride provided (and which may or may not be accurate).
Accordingly the death records provided by Tati are possibilities.

I have Louisa George B 1848...who married Joseph Ball both lived in Longbridge Deverill. Louisa was daughter of my gt/gt/grandfather Benjamin George. I wonder if there is any connection to your Ball family.
