Title: Looking for helpful advice on County Cork and Cape Clear
Post by: john248g on Sunday 29 November 09 01:56 GMT (UK)
Hello All, I am new to this site.  I was hoping someone would be able to help with the Cape Clear Line of Curtin's.  I am looking specifically for information on the parents, Siblings and ancestors of Jeremiah CURTIN (son of Edward Curtin and Catherine Fitzgerald I believe they were married in 1889 in Skibbereen, County Cork, Ireland - they were Roman Catholic would anyone know the parish there?)).  Thank you for any help (and/or guidence regarding Irish records and research).

CURTIN, FITZGERALD, DRISCOLL

Cape Clear is part of the Roman Catholic parish of Rath and the Islands. The records for this parish have been computerised by the Skibbereen Heritage Centre. Their website is http://www.skibbheritage.com. The centre charges for lookups the Roman Catholic records they hold.

Hello here is a picture of Edward Curtin, jeramiahs father. He is my great grandfather, Jeramiah Curtin is my great uncle (my grandmothers brother). I have a picture somewhere of the other children when they are older in there twenties ( he may be on it but i dont know all the faces.
Here is also a picture of Dennis(Dinny) Curtin Jeramiahs brother taken with is wife bridgy taken in 1975 Dinny as teh eldest must have had the house as he ended his days there Ithink there were 14 children in total ling in teh house. The picture is taken out side of their home which is th said Glen east on cape clear island. Edward (Ned was a seaman and died in liverpool) Garret i heard went on the run to America from the English Republican acticities. William (Bill) was a captain of US Coastguard ship.

I was told that Catherine Fitsgerald had some some connection to the Kennedys with regard to there middle name John (F)itzgerald Kennedy.(but a nice lady named Margaret Curtin believes that" Pres. Kennedy’s Fitzgerald roots are in Co. Waterford"(edit 6 may 11)
EDIT I cant believe this has been viewed over 120 times and no one has commented.

If i can get those with more knowledge to chip in i will amend this (currently dated 13 April 2011)
the last picture is the glen house as  taken in 2005. Dinny and Bridgey would be standing at the corner nearest to us facing away.

Hello,
Yesterday I googled denis curtin cape clear and came up with your message to the RootsChat.
Since I was not a member I had to enroll in order to respond but here I am. I realize that it has been some time since you wrote your message and that you have probably obtained the information you were seeking. but thought I'd let you know that I have the information that you are reqesting.
My grandmother was Honora Annie Curtin, born on Cape Clear on January 17th 1864. To Dennis Curtin and Julia Driscoll. Her brother was Edward "Ned" Curtin who married Catherine Fitzgerald in 1889. They had 12 children one of whom was Jeremiah. I have the names of Jeremiah's siblings but DOB on only a couple of them.
Jermiah married Nelly (maiden name unknown) on November 3, 1935 in Brooklyn NY. I list the names and DOB of their 4 children but do not have additional information on them.
If you feel this is the family that you are researching, I'd be happy to provide whatever further detail I have that might be useful.
I was searching for information on the parents of Dennis Curtin born about 1830, husband of Julia Driscoll. residents of Cape Clear. If you have information pertaining to that generation I would appreciate it.

Hi,

I too am very interested in the Curtin Family of Cape Clear. My children are descendants of Ellen Curtin (Ned's sister) who married Thade Hennessy. Does anyone have any information on the other siblings and who their parents were?  On the 1901 census records a Denis Curtin and Ellen Curtin are listed as father and mother of Head of Household, Edward (Ned) Curtin. A previous correspondent has stated that Julia Driscoll was Ned's mother? Can someone clear this up for me?

Thank you

I have only one recorded sibling to Edward "Ned" Curtin and that is Honora "Annie" Curtin. There may have been another sibling named Ellen but I have no record of that. Your best bet to verify that would be to check with the Cape Clear Heritage Center. Sorry I don't have a URL.

Re: Packington's question regarding my previous post stating that Julia Driscoll was the mother of Ned Curtin; your question caused me to review a document received from Aemon Lankford several years ago. It is the transcript of a conversation that he had with Wiliam "Billy" Curtin in August of 1981. I now conclude that it was not Julia Driscoll who married Denis Curtin, but her sister Shiela. Sorry for the confusion but Billy's narrative is quite convoluted.
