Hi restorers,
I would appreciate it if this photo of my husbands Grandparents could be dated and restored please. It would be a nice gift for him at Xmas.
I think the photo may have been taken at the time of their marriage in 1885 but there is no date on it so please tell me what you think.
Also, just in case anyone would like to have a go at a colour version as well,
Grandad's Army details were:
He was in the 1st Battalion, The Sherwood Forresters.
Description
Hair: Auburn.
Eyes Hazel.
Thanks very much
Barbara.

Hello Barbara
Early-mid 1880's & married as an intimate pose like this was out of the question prior.
jim
-
Yep, certainly looks like married.
Think the lady is wearing leather gloves and there is a ridge where her ring would be.
-
I noticed the ring as well. She's holding her hand in a prominent position to show her status but why wear gloves?
jim
-
Because she is being posh :D

Because she is being posh :D
Could she be carrying her gloves Paula?
I can see her ring clearly! This looks like a wedding picture to me! Oh whoops I have just read the post and I was only guessing!
That would explain the gloves Paula!

Hi DLG images.
Thanks very much for your restore, much appreciated.
It's really good to see how much better these old photo's can be made to look.
Cheers and thanks again
Barbara.

Hi Wendy,
Thank you for the restore, it's lovely.
It appears really fresh & I'm always surprised at how small details suddenly seem to spring to life.
Although this couple are my husband's Grandparents, I love this photo so I very much appreciate your time.
Cheers
Barbara.

Hi Jim, Paula Too & Rabbit,
Thank you all for your comments.
We have always surmised that this photo was taken at the time of the Grandparents marriage but it's good to have the opinion of others.
I really love this photo, they look happy and confident somehow, with life in front of them.
Grandad went on to complete a full Army career and they brought up a large family, which couldn't have been easy in those days.

I always like to keep the appearance of the old photograph mount and work on the image itself to tidy it up. The photograph itself is a historic document ... :)
Great photo.
At the same time this was taken my great grandfather was fighting on the North West Frontier of India .... where we are fighting today ! ! Eventually died of cholera and is buried out their in the hills of Kohat.
-
Hello Tony,
Thanks very much for the restore and frame.
It looks super and I'm glad that you also think it's a great photo - as I do.
I was interested to read about your Gt Grandad, but it's sad to think he's buried so far from home though.
Once again, thanks so much for your work
Cheers
Barbara.

Sorry I have no idea if I have his colours right, just...when in doubt go for red.
Lovely picture though.
Am I the only one who thinks her bottom button looks a bit tight?
-
Hi Paula,
That is wonderful, yep that young lady is definitely having a baby I would have said!
You have done a superb job on this picture, well done.
Rabbit B ;)

Thanks Rabbit, it's a lovely photo to do. I've enjoyed it.

Hi Paula,
I haven't had time to do mine at all yet!
Might get more time when I have done all my cards!

Hi Paula,
Thank you so much once again for such a lovely colour restore.
From the records I hold I think that you and Rabbit are correct in your comments that a baby was on the way !
I'm very grateful for your time and expertise in producing this super picture for me Paula.
Cheers
Barbara.

Hi Barbara,

I will have a bash at this lovely picture as soon as I get a mo!
Rabbit B :)

Hi Carolyn,
Thanks ever so much for the great restore.
It's very kind of you to take the time (especially now) and once again it's so nice to see the different look that you clever people manage to give to these old photo's which are so precious.
Cheers
Barbara.

A coloured one from me. :) :)

Hi Wendy,
Thanks very much for the smashing colour restore.
What a nice & unexpected surprise first thing in the morning.
My husband tells me that the ordinary ' Infantry of the Line' wore Scarlett Tunics at that time, so the colours that you've used for Grandad are spot on.
Also, I think that Nana looks lovely too - the hats worn by the ladies then must have made them feel really glamorous.
I really appreciate your time & kindness.
Cheers
Barbara.

A little bit of colour doesn't go amiss! Bowman
-
Hi Bowman,
Thanks very much for yet another colour view of this photo that I like so much.
I'm getting a great collection together.
Much Appreciated.
Cheers
Barbara.

I hope that you don't mind me colouring your picture, the small one is from there regimental Museum for that period.
-
Hi genechaser,
How good of you to find that. I spent ages trying to find that uniform on all of the regimental website archives.
I certainly missed that one though! I am sure that it will be a great help! Lovely restore as well Barbara will be pleased!
Rabbit B :)

Hi genechaser,
Thanks ever so much for the lovely restore.
A special thanks for the confirmation of uniform, colours, etc.
I'm keeping all the restores, printed off and slotted into a special album.
I love looking at them all and I'm really grateful to the kind people on Rootschat who give their time, patience & skill to help.
By the way, I have posted another photo of the same man but older if you want to have a look.
Here's the link:

For those who would like to try colouring for themselves, this link will take you to a website that was featured in a Geneaology mag a while ago, I use it to great effect :-http://www.blackmagic-color.com/ you will have to cut and paste.
Regards Bowman
-
Hi Bowman,
Thank you for the link.
I'll look into it but I don't think for a moment that I'll be able to produce the sort of colour restores that I've been lucky enough to have been given by Rootchat restorers.
Kind thought though
Barbara.

Barbara, believe me once you have tried it and found how easy it is to use, you will be amazed at the results you can get, the trouble with the free trial is, you spend quite a bit of time colouring a photo with all the functions in the trial, only to find that it will not let you save your work!! but it is a piece of software that does NOT have to be installed!!
give it a try!!!

Hi there
They are fairly mature for the time, to have married. As he is promoted do you not think it may be a picture prior to shipping out somewhere?
Best wishes
