I am trying to find some information on Thomas CRUSE born c Mar 1841 POUGHILL , Cornwall.
He is shown in the 1881 census to have originated from Poughill. The marriage cert for his son Thomas Alwyne CRUSE shows The father's occupation to be a Harbour Master. No info on where though.
Previously he was a Police Officer. Does anyone know if it is possible to check if he was , in fact , a harbour master and where this would have been.
Any info on the Cruse family will be greatly appreciated.
Regards
Paul Evans

I had just come back to write the same thing !!!!
Poughill is near to Kilkhampton.
Never forget not all births were registered that early on .This may be one case of that.
Bap Kilkhampton 19th Feb 1841 Thomas to William and Susan

can you see him in 1851,1861 i cannot find him anywhere
mick
-
In 1901 he is a retired police officer in St Just in Roseland so may well have become a harbour master then.

could be him in 1861

Yes I agree with 1861 Wozzle - just come back from Freecen - haha
Cant find his Mum and dad and they dont seem to have had any more children. Wonder if they died and in 1851 Thomas was with a Barnicoat family somewhere ?
Fizzy
PS the confusion with him saying he was born Poughill seems to be with his father William and siblings having beeen born there.
-
27 year old William Cruse died in Kilkhampton in 1842 so perhaps Mum remarried ?

No not barnicoat sorry
If his parents were William and Susan then she was a HOPGOOD.
In 1849 Susan Cruse married either Daniel barrable or William Bonetta.

found him i think in 1851. transcribed as cruise
HO107/1897/104/19
william berratta age 56. b. morwenstow. occ. farm labourer head
susan berratta age 38. b. kilkhampton. wife
thomas cruise. age 10. b. kilkhampton. wifes son
elizabeth cruise age 8. b. ditto. wifes daughter
norah berratta age 1. b. poughill. daughter.
living at;broomhill, poughill,cornwall
so thomas's father must have died between 1843 when elizabeth was born and 1850 when norah was born
-
here is the 1891 entry
transcribed as crews
RG12/1827/44/27
thomas crews age 50. b. kilkhampton. occ. police constable. head
mary.a. age 46. b. tregony. wife
jane.t. age 16. b. st.mawes. occ. pupil teacher. daughter
mabel.n. age 14. b. ditto. daughter
thomas.a. age 11. b. ditto. son
elizabeth.t. age 8. b. ditto. daughter
living at;st.just,st.mawes,cornwall
-
Thomas father could have died as soon as his mother was pregnant with her second child so I think he was the one who died in 1842 and then Elizabeth was born a bit later 1842/1843

i can tell you that on the 1911 census
his occupation states pensioner (police force)
underneath this it says collector of pier and harbour dues
there is only him and his wife mary ann living in the household
they are living at st.mawes
-
And.....if thomas was trying to describe that job to the registrar it is prob why it was recorded as harbour master.
