Title: Buchanan homestead in Palmerston North
Post by: Gwenn02 on Thursday 26 November 09 06:49 GMT (UK)
I should even say mansion...

I am looking for information about an old "grand house' who unfortunately doesn't exist anymore (destroyed in 1955's  by a developer)

It was a huge homestead built

the house was huge also .. stones and wooden pillars, ballroom, huge estate at the corner of Rangitikei Street and Argyle avenue

The homestead has been build for Hugh Duncan BUCHANAN, circa 1900 a sheep farmer

I'm looking for any information about this house (local archives haven;t kept lot :-( )

It has been in the 1926 the place where Carncot school was

The original address was 127 Rangitikei avenue

Thanks for any hints

Palmerston north city archives ... they have no info about this house ...

They have only a 1955 press article (The Time) about the destruction of the building

I have an original photo of Carncot class pupils circa 1926 with a glimps of the building in the background ... but no more

I wonder about original council records that would show when first built/changes made to building etc
these may have been transferred to archives..check with PN council

I've checked yesterday with them ... they have nothing

Many wonderfull old huge homesteads have been destroyed in PN (very well known city for outrage to Heritage) often by developpers after WW2 and especially in the 80s'

Wonderfull !!!!!    :)

Yes I would be happy to have photo of the building (scanned photo or other mean) . I have only one photocopy of the building from a press article at the time of the demolition. And also an old photograph of a croquet or cricket match with Carncot Pupils with a part of the building in the background. I have also a description made long ago by an old girl of the school.
Are you in Palmerston North area ?
