The 1901 census records:
Daniel Broadhurst 44, General Lab. Hartington, Derbyshire
Jemima Broadhurst 45, Darley Dale, Derbyshire
Maud Broadhurst 14, Carrying Out Milk. Hegworth, Lancs
Rosa Broadhurst 8, Waterloo, Lancs
John T Broadhurst 6, Waterloo, Lancs
Daniel Broadhurst 4m, Waterloo, Lancs
living at 9 York Court, Waterloo, Crosby, Lancs.
I have found birth registrations for the four children listed, however, I can find no marriage record or a birth record for Daniel senior.
The1881 census on Familysearch did not yield any Broadhursts in Harington at all. I ruled out the family in Crich as too far away.
A descendent of this family also insists there were two other (older) brothers, Len and George, who died in naval service during WWI.
I would really appreciate some help in tracking this family.

In 1891 they are in Nottingham and wife is called Maria, (born Darley Dale), children Maud born Keyworth Leicestershire? and Dora? (hard to read) aged 10 Months born Middleton?. They are living at 45 Mount? Street, Nottingham.
If you can buy one of the children's birth certificates and see what the Mother's Maiden Name was it may help to track the marriage.

Theres a son George age 9 on 1911 born Waterloo Lancs and Daniel is a widower
-
I POSTED THIS BEFORE ISOBEL'S RESPONSES CAME THROUGH.
Thanks Tressle,
Having spotted a rather embarassing arithmetic error (1901 - 44 does not equal 1867), I think I have found Daniel's birth registration in Ashbourne Q2 1858.
I have just been told that Daniel's wife's maiden name may have been Pilkington.
Was the Dora listed as a girl?
Thanks Isobel - George would have been a mere boy when he joined up! A Jemima Broadhurst died aged 48 in 1910 in West Derby (covered Waterloo).

Theres a death Dec qu 1910 Jemima Broadhurst aged 48 West Derby 8b 167. age fits

Hi
Well there is a Jemima Pilkington born 1860 in Darley with parents Thomas and Margaret. She is aged 4 months on the 1861 census.
She is a servant in Lancashire in 1881.

Hi
Sorry yes Dora down in the 'female' column. I must admit I find it hard to read as it is quite faded - I've got old eyes... ;D
Tressle

Did he remarry or could Maria be a badly written rendition of Jemima?
The censuses indicate that Daniel went south to Kegworth having married at some point, back up to Middleton (which one I wonder), then moved way over to Waterloo. Hum, quite a nomad!
Justin
PS I just bought new glasses. Makes a huge difference!

Hi Justin
Yes waiting for my new glasses as I speak. My varifocals had an accident and I have only got half of one arm left - I have to hold them in front of my eyes as best I can but keep getting a bit seasick :) Varifocals have to be 'lined up' properly don't they - typing and holding my glasses is a nightmare....roll on Saturday when my new ones will be ready.
I have not found a marriage yet. I have just had a look on the Commonwealth War Graves site to see if either Len or George show up but nothing that I can see either.
Isabelruss found a death and that is in the name of Jemima, so I suspect Maria could be a mistake.

John Broadhurst, born Waterloo - his WW1 service records are on Ancestry. Father Daniel. He got a Meritorious Service Medal and was mentioned in Despatches. It says born 1894 is that about right?

Tressle,
I wear variofocals too and can thoroghly empathise. My new pair is about a week old and I'm still getting used to them.
John's record is a fabulous find. If he was 6 in 1901, then 1894 would fit. That's one part of the family story confirmed.
I was wondering if young Daniel may have been known in the family as Len. Waht do you think?
Justin
-
Hi
Well it is a good possibility that Daniel was Len. - Although I don't think he died in WW1 as he is on a passenger list coming into the UK in 1921 from the USA - he gives the same address (Waterloo) as John gives for his father on the service records. He is a dairyman.
There is a Daniel Broadhurst who is on the list of 'aliens employed on the vessel as crew' - he is a 2nd class Boy. The ship is called the New York and it is going to New York in 1918 from Liverpool. He is 5ft 2 and 105 pounds. Aged 17 so could be your Daniel.
I cannot see a marriage, will have another look around.
I hope you soon get used to your glasses, it does take a bit of perseverance.

Hello Tressle,
If my colleague's gran (in her 80s) is right about Len, then we might not have the right family.
On the other hand, I can see no matching birth registration for a Leonard B.
I shall ask if my colleague can re-check the details.

Hi
yes I'm intersted in the Pilkingtons
Just to add a bit. Jemima Holmes is actually Jemima Pilkington, she must have been a widow when she married Charles Welch. I pretty sure this is correct as I have her mentioned in a will as Jemima Welsh daughter of Hannah Pilkington. This Hannah Pilkington is also the mother of Thomas Pilkington 1803, who is also mentioned in the will. So Thoams Pilkington 1829 & Margaret Welsh 1830 are cousins.
Cheers Jo
