Title: evacuation

hey,


i was wondering if anyone had any relatives that evacuated during or before the second world war from Birmingham and where they evacuated to, or if anyone knows of a website that might come of use to me. Its for a history assignment I'm doing  :)

I was "evacuated" to North Wales from Birmingham.  It was not a forced one just that I was sent to my grandparents as we were close to Castle Bromich aerodrome which was constanly under threat and our house was fire bombed, not serious damage but family thought it best to move me. Had a great time unlike others who were forced from London etc and were treated very badly by their billetted families.  Our whole family (26 of us) had plans to move to USA if things got really bad as we had relatives over there, however things never came to that thank heavens.

A similar tale - my grandparents sent their children to stay with relatives in Berkshire (my grandmother's brother).  They followed a little later, and none of them ever returned to live in Birmingham.  They already knew the place as they had been for visits and holidays before, and living conditions would have been better and food more plentiful - for instance, they were able to grow vegetables and keep a cow.

Strange to think that but for Hitler, I would be someone else and not me!

i just need to figure out what i want in my enquiry, just getting some questions together that will show whether there was poverty in birmingham or not :)

The answer to that is yes.There was poverty everywhere.This was pre National Health & benefit.Back-to-backs were still common,many not being cleared until the 60's.
There was no organised evacuation as in London but more as has already been said in the previous posts.
There will be those on the link I gave who also would have 1st. hand knowledge of the war years in B'ham.
