Title: Henry Tyson and Margaret Porter
Post by: stow on Tuesday 24 November 09 05:19 GMT (UK)
I am researching the parentage of William Tyson who married Isabella Marie Coulson 1805 Newcastle All Saints and emigrated to Australia 1809.

Can anyone help me with info about his parents? He was born 1780-81 in Cumberland, reputedly the 11th child of Henry Tyson and Margaret Porter.

He served in the Royal Cumberland Militia 1803-1808.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

How accurate is his birth date? And any idea where he was born as there are many Wm Tysons on IGI.

Just search the IGI for children of Henry TYSON and Margaret 1772 +/- 20 in British Isles/England/Cumberland and you will find a large family in Netherwasdale.  (submitted baptisms)

Hi,

I am a descendant of William and Isabella Tyson. I have that his parents were Henry Tyson and Margaret Porter also, but I can't quite match the dates of births, deaths and marriages up correctly and am unwilling to say for certain that Henry and Margaret were in fact the correct parents, especially as most of the stories about James Tyson's history say only that Henry and Margaret were "reputedly" William's parents. I am doing futher research, and perhaps William's military record will have his next-of-kin listed which might provide a clue as to his parentage. There appears to be some confusion as to whether William Tyson was born in Whitehaven or Whitesyke. I'm not quite convinced that he is one of the Nether Wasdale region Tysons - need more evidence.

Send me  a message if you want to know more! :)

Hi again,

I have found out some more info since my initial post. I have copies of some old letters written at the time of James Tyson 's contested estate.
These letters state that Henry and Margaret Porter are the parents of William Tyson.
When William and Isabella came to Australia, they left behind their eldest child Margaret in the care of her Grandmother. The letter states that the old grandmother died in 1828 and Margaret Tyson goes to Liverpool and marries. We know that Margaret (Porter) Tyson dies 7th January 1828.
A family historian has been able to visit the Whitehaven record office and there is no William Tyson born at that date. So I am assuming it is Whytesyke.
The story of the quarrel between William and his family is well known within the family.
Other information in the letters regarding the marriage of Margaret Tyson etc have been proved to be correct.
These letters also mention a property dispute in Ayreshire where the family bible of Margaret Tyson was used in some way as evidence in the matter.   The hunt continues. Tim. Australia

Go to http://www.old-maps.co.uk/IndexMapPage2.aspx

Search
Nether Wasdale .... zoom in ... you will see Whitesike

It appears to be the farm/hamlet just here http://tinyurl.com/y98bhj9

This seems to vindicate the IGI Nether Wasdale baptisms that I found earlier (about which no one has bothered to comment)  :-\

Hi Stow, Thanks for that info. I am actually going to the National Library today and will have a look at the Tyson estate papers that they hold. They also have the family history books compiled by Rita Shiel.

Geoff-E, I had actually seen the Nether Wasdale parish register :) ...And had even made a tentative family tree of William Tyson based on it, but like I said, wasn't willing to say for sure that it was correct until further confirmation.

Hi Harpraxis,
Like you, I am not entirely convinced of the parentage of William Tyson.
Further investigation of the Nether Wasdale online transcripts reveal the death of a William Tyson of Whitesyke on 19 October 1787. If this is the same William that was born 13 September 1779, then that rules out conclusively Henry and Margaret Porter as parents.

Looking forward to the outcome of your visit to the National Gallery etc.

We will all keep digging.

Hi,

I realise that this is a little late but the William Tyson who died in Netherwasdale in 1797 was a member of the Greendale family and he married Jane Bateman in 1757 at NW.

If anyone is interested in the parents - Henry Tyson & Margaret Porter - then I can help.

Nev.

Not quite the thread but any of you Tyson people researching William Tyson of High Trees, Lamplugh, circa 1855?
