-
oh dear
think you're going to have dig deeper before you take that as gospel.
You say that John went to Australia and you have "everything" after that -- do you have any Australian certificates that might give you more info?
-
have john jr papers 4 when arrived in aussiie in 1846 on the palmyra said was 18 and tried at leicester 4 stealing got marriages and death ones nt much on them
-
No names of parents on the certificates?
Does it say when the offence was committed or the trial held? You might be able to get something from the criminal records that tells you more - where he lived for example.
-
said stealing beef and handkerchiefs on 31 dec 1845 frm nicholas higginson shop highcross street and took it 2 all saints church yard jst says tried leicester quarter sessions 5 jan 1846 no parents names
-
I have copies of Queensland death certs from around 1900, and they give the names and occupations of the parents of the person who's died, as well as the details of their marraige and children, even though the dead person was an adult and was born and married in England before emigrating.
Have you got nothing like that for any of John's descendants?
-
What occupation did John take up once he was in Australia?
-
no how do i go abot getting ones like tht he was a shepherd in fingal when he deid was laborer
-
hi i got on 2 the web site of uk roots it says on the 1871 census there is 2 john dimmocks on it frm leicestershire wood anyone be able 2 look it up 4 me many thanks 2 anyone tht can help me :D
-
I'm sorry, I don't know how you get Australian certs - I was sent those that I have by someone who lives in Queensland. They have a lot of info on, as you can tell.
Re the 1871 census - all I can see are these:
John Dimmock and his wife Elizabeth age 82 and 79, living in Appleby, Leicestershire
a 29 year old John Dimmock and his wife Sarah
and a 3 month old John Dimmock.
I'd be surprised if the first was your John, if only because IME it would be unusual to have lived in the town (they married in Leic St Mary didn't they?) then move out to a relatively distnat village. The population usually moved in the other direction!
In 1841 I can only find one possible in Leicester -
John Demmocks age 9, born in Leicestershire, living in St Mary's in a household full of adult men, none of whom bears the same surname.
Class: HO107; Piece 605; Book: 8
(I hope I've put that reference correctly!)
This 9 year old John was a needle maker and the absence of anyone with a similar surname would make me wonder if he was an orphan.
