Hi Phil,
I have already done almost all of the war graves in Failsworth Cemetery last year while I was doing some for the Manchester Regiment, Dad I I were enjoying hunting out the war graves so we carried on & did the other regiments too.
I will gladly do any at Chadderton & Royton Cemeteries for you when the weather improves, if you would like to send me the details Dad & I will get them as soon as we can.
(If St Gabriels is the one by the Station at Middleton Junction I may be able to do that one too, my sister lives by there)
I may already have some done at Phillips Park too, I did quite a few last year but not in any ordered form, I just saw some by a family plot & started photographing whichever I saw as i walked around.
Let me know which names you need at Failsworth & Phillips park & I will see if I have them for you.

OK, I definatly have Norman Carter at Failsworth, hes ticked off on my list.
At Phillips Park I am pretty sure I have Thomas Rafael Johnson, I seem to remember wondering why a Durham Light Infanryman was buried in Manchester.
I also think I have William Deakin, I think they were actually very close together.
My Hard Drive is curently at the computer shop (hopefully) being repaired, it crashed a few weeks ago & I had to have a new one. I will check them properly for you when it comes back

Hi Phil, well i braved the weather this morning and dragged my bike out for the ride ;D
I managed to get your man buried in Radcliffe for you and also photographed every CWGC headstone while i was there but as the weather took a turn for even heavier rain. I was not able to search every headstone for men who died WW1 & 2 in privet graves.
Will send you and email with the photo you asked for. It maybe a week or so before me and that darn bike brave the weather again to get your missing man in Agecroft, but i will do it.I have sent you further information on some of the men buried in Southern cemetery.
Migky ;)
Note for Beannie *
When you go to Southern cemetery, i think you will find that not all those men buried there are in CWGC graves. Meaning they may not have the white sandstone headstones and maybe be buried in family graves. Which can make it a little tricky sometime to find as the CWGC headstone are normally easy to spot, but sure some one like your self will find what ever headstone are there.
Tis a big place.

Migky, what can I say. firstly thanks for the emails with the Photo's you had on file, fantastic stuff. But sharing info that you already have is one thing, but getting on your bike (literaly), and going out in the rain to get a photo within 24 hours is something else.
An example of what being a forum member is all about, giving as well as taking
Thanks once again

Its no problem Phil, Dad has actually got quite into doing war graves Photos, he was a war baby born just as the war began in 1938 & I think in its way its kind of his idea of some kind of 'payback' to the men who lost their lives.
It was a nice day today & we were both just in the mood to go get some air & DO something after being stuck in by the weather for the last few days, walking around taking photos is my gentle exercise while I am recouperating. Its just such a shame that the weather has been so wet & the grave not as easy to get to as they usualy are.

Phil,
I'm really struggling with the two lads at Weston super Mare. Am going up again tomorrow to meet the old groundsman to see if he can help, it is possible they were moved in the early 2000's when they did a safety check on the memorials.

Hi Midmum & Phil, did you know you can report any broken/damage or headstone that are or about to fall over to the CWGC. They maitain them.
You can contact them
CWGC
U.k. Area office.
Tel 0192 6330 137.
Migky ;)
-
Hi Migky,
Is that just the standard war grave ones or private ones also. This was a private one, if it includes them I will give them a ring.
Midmum
-
Midmum / Migky, my understanding is that it only applies to CWGC graves, and not family headstones or memorials, I recently identified a headstone of a South Lancs man from Wigan who was murdered as a POW, his name was Culshaw, and his headstone had said Gulshaw for the last 65 years.
The CWGC are currently in the process of replacing the headstone.
ps, Midmum, Pm sent with contact details.
Migky, still in the process of writing something up for the Manchesters website.

Hi Phil

Phil
Hi Phil, my apologies i should have made my self clearer. I should have said that the CWGC will only maintain any war graves they have erected and own.
So if any one on there travels finds any CWGC headstone that are broke/damaged or fallen over, they should contact the phone number above and report them.

What are you now out standing from your original request Phil?
Migky ;)

Middleton St Gabriels now on its way to you :)
Very strange thing happened while we were taking the photo - dad suddenly realised that the next grave was named 'Redfern' and had a war memorial on it, from the parents names he then realised that this was the older brother of one of his childhood friends and he had seen his photo in the parents home nearly all the time he was growing up and heard about the brother being killed in the war. I think he found it quite strange to find the grave of someone he 'knew' completely by accident.

The story dad was told was - Jack was a spitfire pilot, killed during a battle - he shot down enemy aircraft & then was himself killed either while doing a 'Victory Roll', or as he came out of the Roll - Dad thinks he remembers the parents saying there had been another enemy plane that came out of no-where & shot him down.
Doing this has proved to be a great way of getting dad to reminise about his childhood & family, I am learning things I never knew .............. this grave made dad remember about a wood Work class with Neil (the younger brother) and tell me stories about him & Neil trying to carry home a wood table they had made together - which we still own and use daily - I knew dad had made it, but he had never told me this before!

OK, do you need any more around Chadderton or Royton still?
ohhhhhh question - do you have access to WW1 South Lancs records? I THINK I found one of my dads extended family but I am not 100% certain.

Gallie, you have already done Chadderton for me :) I dont have anything for Royton unless it also goes by another name.
With relation to WW1 service records, if it is on Ancestry or national Archives, I can get a copy, and also have teh South lancs Regimental History so fire away and I will see what I can find.

Heather,
My name is Marguerette Joyce Edlin. In March 2007 you wrote to my brother Michael Peter saying you had some information about our grandfather Edward Fredrick Holberton Edlin and great grandfather Edward Colsil Edlin. I was wondering if you would be kind enough to share this information with me. I live in China and am in the process of writing my memoirs and I want to get my facts as straight as possible.
Thanks so much
Joyce
-
Hi Marguette,
I don't recall writing to your brother (it was 3 years ago!!) but i will pm you my e-mail as I do have info on the Edlin line you mention, then we don't hijack this thread!
Sorry Phill, haven't done Peel yet as my youngest picked a fight with a car and so have been rather occupied but he is fine now so may get there this weekend.

Hi,
I have started on Rochdale - but the cemetery is a nightmare!
the map does tally up with the plots - and some of the graves aren't in the plots the GWGC says they are - so its taking a while!
I have ALL of the Cremations memorial done tho :)
Gaille
(lol this is my log-in at work :))
Phil - Do you have a list of which are GWGC graves & which are 'family' ones ?

Hi Phil.
Just letting you know I am not lost in the wilds of Rochdale Cemetery!
Dad & I have done a lot of Rochdale, but I think we may have to admit defeat on one or two of them cos despite going up & down a small plot grave by grave we just CANT locate the graves at all!
LOL cant remember if you asked me for Heywood too - but I have also done some there if so!
I have actually found several interesting gravestones I will be posting in the local boards that may be of interest to people with local connections.
I am going to collate all my photos & dads tomorrow (hopefully) so I will get them to you asap.
Gaille
-
Hi Gaille
Just a thought, I had problems with a grave at Stockport, it turned out that the CWGC had the wrong Ref. No
Mo
-
Hi Mo,
The problem at Rochdale is that the map bears little resemblance to the actual plots!
I was chatting to a man the other day who lives locally & walks his dog thru the cemetery daily, he was asking what I was doing and as usual I explained, he asked who I was looking for so I showed him the list, and he told me the grave was way over the other side of the plot to where I was - even tho the grave number I was beside made it look like it was close by!
Gaille

Did you get the photo's of the last three men?
ROBERT ERIC KAY, 3656893
CLIFFORD SUTCLIFFE, 3663135
ERNEST PATRICK LYONS, 3450235
I was down at Philips Park and popped into Droylsden and took their photos if you still need them two.
My grandad was in the South Lancs and I have a photo of him in the Montgomery Club in 1945, and a group photo of about 100 men, I assumed that was taken after the war.
