Has anyone given up and then gone back to family history?
If so how long was you away from it and what madeyou get back into it?
Hope you dont mind me asking.

I often leave my family history for a while, because I come against a brick wall or generally feel that I am not getting anywhere. I feel it is like a jigsaw puzzle, if I leave it alone a while when I return to it many pieces seem to fit together easily.
That's just my way of dealing with it anyway
Kind regards Susan

I wonder if every one at some point thinks about giving up.
Its the mess i have all this paper with bits writen on them start writing it in my books(i have one for every family).thinking it belongs to my family but dose'nt fit in throw the paper away then when i go back to the family i need that bit of paper and can't rember were i got it from or find it again on the net.
Maybe i do need a break.

I put it on the back burner and Ive started to do transcribing and I live in hope someone else is doing the same thing and my lost relis will turn up.
There is nothing more demoralizing then going over old ground hoping youve missed something and finding you havnt.
So I havnt given up just spend less time looking because once youve started this addiction it never lets you go.

I have "given up" several times due to time constraints etc etc
What I do find is when you come back to it you sometimes hit on things you missed before and with new resources going online all the time it is worth looking at brick walls again and again.

I gave up for a long time, I hit one heck of a brickwall with 2 sides of my families and just could not get past them.
About 2 years ago I got an email out of the blue from a lady who had seen my details & wondered if her Margaret Smith was also my Margaret Smith, she mentioned a few names & I was about to reply & say I didnt think they were the same person and I just happened to mention one of the names in the email to my dad ........................... and Bingo! he just turned around & said "thats my Mums uncle Billy, ask her if she knows a Maggie as well, if she does its my Nanas family"
LOL I will be honest & say I was mad at him cos he had NEVER mentioned these names before despite me asking him for help!

I'm finding less and less time these days and still have to rely on the internet, so I dip in and out of family history, but not done any for a while.
Off sick today, so I have found some quiet time ;) and started looking at old census pages I had found (just a hunch) quite a while ago.
Well, when I re-read them and a marriage certificate and then looked at the BMD list, lo and behold I found 3x Granddad, His wife and children. He had been starring me in the face, so to speak ;D They all tied neatly together.
So I'd say you can never give up, the door is always open!! A rested pair of eyes spot missed things.

I never give up, but I often put all the papers away for a while ~ until I get the chance to work on them again, without them getting in everyone's way!! :)

No, if I get stuck I move to another line or go sideways. There are so many lives to learn about and I only have the one to do it in ;D

When I first started trying to do my tree about 6 years ago, I got nowhere and gave up. Then about 2 years ago I found out that my sister in law was working on hers, and she gave me a nudge in the right direction. Finding this forum was a great boon.

ha ha good question. ;D
yes I have. I started 5 years ago when I was incapacitated with a back problem and being housebound it was my saviour. It kept me sane and provided me with an exciting challenge . After 4 months I was well enough to go back to work and shelved the project.
Last month. my Father came to stay with us and talking over his WWll naval exploits and looking through family photos and lettters has fired me up again so I've been recharged ;D made some real headway too with some very generous help from some Rootschat members

I don't give up, but have long periods when I just don't have the time to get further.
I had a real productive time in the summer, but since September, hardly anything.

After 20 odd years I don't do so much on my and the OH's families now, most of what can be found has been found - but the vacum has been filled by the research I do on the life of the C18th diarist Parson James Woodforde and all the people who came into his life and much of that is genealogical.
I also dabble in my cats' ancestry. I wanted to work out if they were related to the most famous Siamese cat ever - Jason of Blue Peter, and he is their many times gt. uncle .... but then basically nearly all Siamese cats are related to each other in some way. The gene pool isn't that big ;D
