Hi, i am researching the Howlett family in Norfolk but am at a complete standstill, can anybody help?
I started with My great grandad Ernest Howlett b 1889 norfolk
(based on info from my dad) i purchased his marriage certifcate
...married Mabel May Fiddy 1915 Norwich Norfolk (aged 26)
Now the marriage certificate says the father is John Howlett,
I have no age or birth year for him, but i found on 1901 census that he is married to Georgiana...
When it going back to the 1891 census i found the correct family as Ernest was 2 then... (but i don't have the details of this census)
I cannot pinpoint the correct John Howlett in 1881 .. there are quite a few by this name in Norfolk.
Also there are a couple of listing for a John married to Georgiana (Georgeanna) :-\
all of similiar age....
I hope this makes sense
I hope someone can help ???
thanks :)
Tracy

in 1915 what occupation(s) are given.
What names witness?
Pauline
-
In 1901 John & Georgiana's Ernest is 22y old, so not your man.
-
Hi Pauline,
the witnesses names are William Howlett and Lily Howlett
the Occupation for Ernest Howlett is 'Milkman'
John Howlett is 'Farm Bailiff '
Jonathan Fiddy is 'Farm Laborer'
(My dad has always said that the 'Fiddys' were the farm Bailiffs) so maybe the two fathers occupations got mixed up ???
-
i found in 1901 census two john howletts both with wives georgianas and both with sons ernest, but one ernest is 12 the other 22, the 12 year old is my ernest...
but this is why it gets confusing going further back....
-
Georgiana was married before. And in one Census her children are listed as Hardiman and the other as Howlett.
Marriage;
Georgiana HARDIMAN
December 1883
Norwich 4b 424
On same page John HOWLETT
-
LOOK at the 1901 census. (with the 12-y-old)
There are STEP-SONS with the family, so you should be able to ID the name Georgiana married under...
(like wot Trish did)!
-
I and only seeing a Delia Hardiman for 1901.....
-
Hi Tracy,
Using a bit of logic the witness at the Marriage is probably Ernests brother William.
If you search;
www.freebmd.org.uk
Look for ;
Marriage
Howlett, William
Norfolk
Date range, 1901-1915 (between 1901 census where is is single and 1915 where he could be married to a Lily)
Spouses first name, Lily
Trish :)
-
Hi Trish, Thankyou, i didn't think to look up the witnesses, sorry am quite new at this....
now searching the bmd :)
-
No Tracy,
Find the 1901 census again where Ernest is 12.
Father is JOHN, Mother GEORGIANA
Walter and Arthur HARDIMAN are Georgianas children from her first Marriage.
Her and John marry 1883 and then have children together.;
William, Ernest, Alfred . All born after 1883 Marriage.
-
ah so hardiman would be the surname of her first marriage....
-
Yes, I posted the details earlier ;)
-
Now find the 1891 Census again when Ernest is 2.
Georgiana has other child Alice that has left home by 1901 Census. On this one they are all down as HOWLETT ( but we know better now ;D)
-
:) thankyou so much for helping...
In my notes for 1891 i have a Alice L Howlett born c1878
am i right in thinking this is also from georgianas first marriage???
-
ah sorry just saw your last post which answers my question about alice:-)
-
any tips on how to find georgianas maiden name?
-
You are right John HOWLETT is hard to find 1881 conclusively.
So the best idea is to buy the 1883 Marriage Cert.
But you can look for Georgiana HARDIMAN, born abt 1854, Carlton Rode, Norfolk.
Another way to find her is look for Alice , born 1878, Bunwell.
Maybe is she is a Howlett John was married before too?
I'll look as well but it is good if you learn to search yourself.
-
You have to work back in Census and find her first, then you can narrow down when to look for marriage.
-
I've found her in 1881;
look for;
Alice HARDMAN, born 1877, Bunwell, Norfolk
-
From The Free BMD the only hardiman marriage to a georgiana within the right dates is a william hardiman marriage to georgiana plumpton, but there are no birth records for georgiana plumpton..strange
-
ah yes found her in the 1881 census on familysearch.org
age 30
born 1851
married to william
occupation shoekeeper wife
:) :D
-
Unless she was a widow before ;D
try and find her on 1861/ 1871 census
-
oh but in the 1881 census the name is hardman not hardiman ??? ???
eeekkk
William HARDMAN Head M Male 42 Bunwell, Norfolk, England Shopkeeper (Grocer)
Georgiana HARDMAN Wife M Female 30 Carleton Rode, Norfolk, England Shopkeeper Wife
Alice L. HARDMAN Daur Female 4 Bunwell, Norfolk, England
Walter A. HARDMAN Son Male 2 Bunwell, Norfolk, England
-
Its correct and just transcribed incorrectly. You will find this a lot as you work backwards in census.lots of people could not spell and what was written is how it sounded.
1871 Georgiana is a servant;
Look for George Anna PLUMPTON, born 1852, Carleton Road, Norfolk..
I rest my case :D
-
OOh, look whos living next door. William Hardyman age 32
You are 1 lucky woman;
under Georgeanna
1861 Census
Carleton Rode, Norfolk
Eliza PLUMPTON, 37, Head, Widow, Pauper
William, 15, Son, Ag lab
Sophia, 12, Daug, Scholar
Elizabeth, 10, Daug, Scholar
GEORGIANA, 9, Daug, Scholar
Anny KEMP, 79, Mother, Widow, Pauper, (Blind)
Looks like AMY Kemp on image
-
really aw i cannot see next door neighbours, im looking on ancestry 1971 found george anna plumpton aged 19, but can only see the free versions...
still not birth registered under any of these names hmmmm
-
There is a George PLUMPTON reg at the right time.
So you dont have access to census ?
-
all this help is great, thankyou so much, its giving me lots of searching ideas, i hope this helps pinpoints John Howlett (Howlett is my maiden name) im wondering wether he may have been married before too....
i only have acess to 1881 census, and bits that it let you see for free of the others...
-
Its late here in Australia so I will work on this for you tomorrow.
I can post all the Census details fo you also.
As for John Howlett I will see if I can find anything conclusive. But purchasing that Marriage Cert is a must.
-
Thankyou so much,
I'll keep searching too
Speak to you soon
-
Scrap that last one :-[ I will delete
Under PLUMTON
1851 Census
Carleton Rode, Norfolk
HO107/1821/898/46

-
:) thankyou so much for helping...
In my notes for 1891 i have a Alice L Howlett born c1878
am i right in thinking this is also from georgianas first marriage???
Could be.
Have you tried to find alice & georgianna in 1881?
-
Hi Pauline, I've found georgiania for 1881 she was married to william hardiman at that time, but i can't locate john howlett in 1881, have been searching for the best part of the day now lol
-
hi all
i've been on this all day trying to get a lead on john howlett in the 1881 or 1871 census, and i have nothing, think i've searched too much now and scrabbled my brain.... :o
if anyone could give me a lead that would be great ;)
John Howlett b:Bunwell c1951
married georgiana hardiman 1883
son Ernest howlett b1889 wood dalling
(also sons william c1885 & Alfred c1893)
thanks
tracy
-
Hi Tracy ,
There is no lead. There are too many possibilities.
Unfortunately to make sure we are following the right family line we all have to purchase certs.
I am in Australia and have had to do this for my English ancestry.
You need;
Ernests Birth Cert ( to confirm his parents names)
Then their Marriage Cert ( to find their Fathers names, occp etc)
Birth regs;
HOWLETT, Ernest, March 1889, Aylsham, 4b 79
There are also 2 others;
Ernest Robert
Ernest William
You can check this on Freebmd.
Once you have the cert come back with info and we will help again.
If you order the cert and specify Fathers name is John if the one you have purchased is wrong you will get a part refund.
As you have no second name for him I think the Aylsham one is a good bet.
trish :)

Hi. I'm looking for a Mary Howlett, marries Thomas Cornwell in 1810, Beechamwell. I'm trying, really, to discover if he's the "right" Thomas for me. I anyone knows anything about this couple, I'd be glad to hear
Dianne
-
Hi Diane,
Did they have a Son Thomas born c 1828, Beachamwell?
If so his Mother Mary (Widow) appears with him and some of her other children on the 1851 Census.
Mary is born 1790, Gooderstone, Norfolk.
HO107/1831/159/12
Trish :)
-
1841 Census has Thomas CORNWELL Snr born c 1785 Norfolk
HO107/754/3/Shingham
The 1841 Census ages were rounded and he could be slightly older or younger.
Also he is down as born in Norfolk but that could be anywhere in Norfolk.
-
Thanks. If he's the correct Thomas, his son George claims to have been born in Ingham, Norfolk. Shingham and Ingham are suspiciously alike (by name at least). Shall I toss a coin? I know nothing about any possible siblings, though with the father named Thoams a son named Thomas is probable
Dianne
-
On the 1841 Census Thomas and Mary have a Son George born c 1826.
Does your George name his Father as Thomas on his Marriage Cert?
Was he born c 1826?
-
Hi. Yes to the Thomas on the marriage cert, but George seems to have been born around 1815. He's annoyingly vague, giving two different pob on two censuses. No consideration at all to descendants trying to track the family!.
Dianne
-
Sorry it is not your Thomas.
Your George is married by 1851 Census and the other one with Parents Thomas/Mary is unmarried.
Have you considered the George Thomas HOWLETT, Christened St Peter Southgate, Norwich, Norfolk 17 March 1816 with Parents THOMAS and ANN ? (IGI)
-
TracyJD,
I am not sure if this fits in anywhere with your family line but the HOWLETT whom I have is a Norris W. HOWLETT born 17th March 1903 in Buckinghamshire.
He was a Sugar Refinerer and often seemed to travel back and forth to America.
He married my Aunt Gladys ATTRILL in 1947 at Westminster.
Regard,
Christmack
-
TracyJD,
I am not sure if this is any help but here are the Banns for a Sarah Howlett :
Banns of a Robert DOVE single and Sarah HOWLETT spinster of Buckenham, Norfolk on the 14th September 1760.

My Grandfather was Alfred Howlett, Ernests brother. I have a bit of information re John in that Georgana (known as Anna or Annie) died in 1922, he then married his house keeper Mrs Sadler. John went to live at my grandfathers at 9 Gresham Road Norwich up until his death. Kiffer

Ernests brother Alfred was my Grandfather, I am currently researching family history, I have quite a bit of family history including a book written by my Mother. I live close to Bunwell and Carlton Rode, have visited the church yards, John was a Methodist lay preacher I am in contact with the Methodist historian and also the Bunwell history society, who have also written a book, it would be good to contact as we are obviously related somewhere along the line and are researching the same family - thanks Kiffer
-
Hi Tracy trying to contact you as you appear to be researching your Great Grandfather Ernest Howlett as he was my Grandfather Alfred Howletts brother............Thanks Kiffer
