Q 1, When the father's occupation is listed in a marriage cert, can we presume he is still alive at time of marriage?
Q 2, Are middle names left out of documents such as in listings of workhouse inmates?
Thanks,
Fran

Hi Fran,
To put it simply - NO to both questions. ;D
I have a father name mentioned on a marriage cert, with his occupation listed, and I have the father's death cert that predates the marriage.
I also have workhouse records where a middle name has been recorded.
Don't think that's what you wanted to hear though!

on my grandfathers marriage certificate it has both of the fathers names but one of them has "Deceased" in brackets under the name, which was quite a surprise due to the fact very little is known about this fellow
bit of trivia, on my grandfathers will it has another middle name I never knew he had

Fran... No to both, as Di says.
You may find the father named and he may be alive or dead.

My gt grandfather was given a middle name when he was christened (his grandfather's name) but I have not found any evidence of it being used after that - he was married twice but it wasn't on either marriage cert, or on his death cert. I think it's just pot luck whether middle names are used in official records.

I think it all depends if the vicar asked the question " fathers name occupation and is he still alive"......or if the couple actually said my fathers name is *** but he's dead.
If no one mentioned anything then the vicar would just presume.
