Title: Sale Family Wigan
Post by: Jeanes1 on Thursday 19 November 09 21:01 GMT (UK)
I am trying to find any Sale's living in Wigan in 1800's.
Maria Sale from Liverpool was in Wigan in 1797 when her daughter was christened at the local church.  She had two children before she married, their fathers were John Birchall and William Hesketh.  I think she married James Taylor in 1800's

I have the details of one daughter but am unable to find  any thing on her daughter born about 1792 father Hesketh.  Any ideas where to look next.

Any help appreciated

Jean

Hi,

 :)

Welcome to Rootschat.

Have you had a look at the Lancashire Online Parish Clerks website - http://www.lan-opc.org.uk/

There are quite a few records for Sale.  I have posted the ones for Wigan and unfortunately none of them are for the name you are looking for.  There are quite a few for Atherton aka Chowbent and also Leigh  and Hindley all of which are in the Metropolitan Borough of Wigan today, I think  ???.

These are the ones I can see for Wigan:-

Burial: 26 Nov 1800 All Saints, Wigan, Lancashire, England
Henry Sale - Son of Henry Sale
    Age: 10 weeks
    Abode: Hallgate
    Cause of Death: Convuls.
    Notes: Weaver
    Register: Burials 1779 - 1809, Page 313, Entry 5
    Source: LDS Film 1885700

Burial: 30 Nov 1800 All Saints, Wigan, Lancashire, England
Mary Sale - Daughter of Henry Sale
    Age: 4
    Abode: Hallgate
    Cause of Death: Smallpox
    Notes: Weaver
    Register: Burials 1779 - 1809, Page 313, Entry 10
    Source: LDS Film 1885700

Burial: 5 Dec 1800 All Saints, Wigan, Lancashire, England
John Sale - Son of Henry Sale
    Age: 2
    Abode: Hallgate
    Cause of Death: Smallpox
    Notes: Weaver
    Register: Burials 1779 - 1809, Page 313, Entry 20
    Source: LDS Film 1885700

This is really sad as it looks like this family buried three children within two weeks.

Hope you find something.

Hi

Thanks for the info.  Never thought to look for burials.  This proves that there were Sale's in Wigan, and Maria was possible sent in disgrace.  I had been told that Hallgate was a very poor area.

Will search for more burials etc on Lancs Online

Thanks

Jean

Hi,

There are baptisms and marriages on that website too.  The ones I found for Wigan just happen to be burials.
