Any interest in a meet as above sometime next spring say Feb- March 2010? Thoughts welcomed as to date, venue, and numbers interested.
-
Possibly!
-
What do you have in mind?
Possibility
Southampton has the the Maritime Museum for anyone interested in the Titanic. Another place of interest is the Old Cemetrey
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Southampton_Old_Cemetery
Unless you have any ideas in Dorset.
I live in Kent and Canterbury would be a good choice.
gjil :)

Thanks for interest Gill, it's a bit chicken or egg at the moment, do I gauge the potential interest first and then look for suggestions as to venues etc. or vice versa? It seems to be going very slowly at present, perhaps I put too wide geographical parameters in the original suggestion, but I only moved to the South from Yorkshire about 2 years ago.
-
I might be interested; it would depend on the venue.
Nanny Jan
-
Thanks Jan, Southampton has been mentioned as a possible. Could that be suitable?
-
Within striking distance.............I'm in East Dorset. ;)
Nanny Jan
-
Good, that's at least 2, possibly 4 of us interested.
-
Hello all...I am in Surrey and might be able to come....Southampton sounds ok - or what about Porstmouth - Naval Dockyards are great and the seafront has all been done up too.
Milly ;D
-
Or for convenience for people travelling perhaps somewhere along the A3 might be easier.
Milly
-
I for one Milly am reliant on public transport, so I hope we can agree on a mojor centre, Southampton, Portsmouth etc.
-
Yes, Portsmouth is also an option.
There is the Spinnaker Tower, if you don't have fear of heights like myself :o. http://www.spinnakertower.co.uk/
Maybe March would be a better date as there is a Birmingham meet towards the end of Feb.

Thanks for that reminder GJIL
-
Or Salisbury or Winchester?
Perhaps public transport may be easy there?
Milly
-
Count me in Roger.
Lizzie
-
Thanks Lizzie, I believe that Winchester has better transport links than Salisbury, certainly for those travelling by rail between Weymouth and London etc.
-
Hi Roger
It wasn't me that suggested Winchester or Salisbury, it was Milly, but as I'm in Hampshire, Winchester is good for me. ;D
I don't mind where really, if you have to use public transport, then you and others in the same boat should decide where to go. If it's Winchester I'd probably use the train because parking's a bit of a nightmare, although in March the Park & Ride off the M3 is OK. Come to think I'd probably get the train to Southampton too.
Lizzie
-
If I am down south at that time of the year I might make it.
-
Yes that sounds good to me, I am in Portsmouth so if you need any help just ask.
Ivor
-
Thanks for that Ivor.
-
Hi
As well as Ivor im in Porstmouth too , so dending on when or where , have kids to sort out :)
Chelle
-
Think I might make it ........................................
-
Once I know the date and where I will let you know. Been to Portsmouth the would be a good choice.
Bowerboy.
-
Hi Redroger
Love to do one of these - I'm in Sth London and would drive so could pick up others en route. Work and family so plenty of warning required to make sure the day is mine!
Kenny
-
Thanks for offers, suggest the following as a basis for further discussion: Date 6th or 20th March 2010, both are saturdays; Place: Portsmouth seems to be the most popular, but lets have a consensus on it, detail at the place perhaps Ivor could make further suggestions.
-
Hi Roger
Haven't got my calendar for next year, but our youngest grandchild will be 1 on 3 March, so it's possible there might be a party for her, so 20 March would be better for me.
Portsmouth is OK, I'll just get the train down, it takes about 1hr 20minutes, it's probably quicker to drive, but less hassle with parking etc.
Lizzie
-
As far as I can tell 20th March will be ok for me. Depending on venue I might drive over and could offer a lift to anyone in East Dorset area.
Nanny Jan
-
Sorry wont be able to make either dates as we will be away in France :'(
-
Portsmouth has plenty to offer, as mentioned theres the Spiniker Tower, Historic dockyard with HMS Victory, the Warrior and the Mary Rose, theres also the explosions museum just a short ferry trip on the gosport side of Portsmouth Harbour, and great shopping to be had at the new prestidgious Gun Wharf keys complex as well.
Pubs and restaurants are abundant.
Only one draw back i can see, IF Portsmouth becomes a chosen venue, make sure its not when the football team is playing at home, (no im not a footie follower) the ground is in the city, and entry to the city becomes a nightmare as does parking.
-
Portsmouth might be a bit far for me, I might have to wait for a SouthEast Meet - but hope you all enjoy yourselves!
-
Ivor, be grateful if you would 1) Confirm where Portsmouth football team are on 20th March 2) Suggest a quiet pub which has a (semi) private room that we could take over depending on how many of us there are. Thanks.
Roger
-
Portsmouth are at home to Hull City on 20 March.
-
Thanks Nigel, So that makes Portsmouth difficult to say the least, why not try Winchester then, same day? How does that sound, or if we stick to Portsmouth then the 27th would be a possibility.
-
Think we need a date here so peeps have got something to work to, the actual place is secondry, as long as its easy to get to.
Ivor
-
We need a firm date, but also we need to decide what we want to do during the day. If it's just sit, eat, drink and chat then the place is probably not that important.
LIzzie
-
I'm up for a meet in Portsmouth in the spring. I'll be here given I have no work/study committments :)
Matt.
-
Very true Lizzie, we need a firm date, so I suggest 27th March, the place Portsmouth, the venue, either the historic naval dockyard or the Spinnaker tower. I don't know whether the dockyard is open Saturdays, but I would imagine it will be, or the extent to which the Spinnaker is open to the public.
Thoughts very welcome all who are interested.
-
I went to Portsmouth recently, yes there is a variety of shops, the Spinnaker Tower is worth a visit, but it is a relatively "quick" visit and there is a charge.
There are lots of restaurants/bars, with a mix of foods, (we had Tapas, which was great).
Something historic would be good, I think at other roots meetings there has been a "programme" which might be a good idea.
I am a "possible" on the list :-\
newbie
-
I don't want to make the meet too formal Newbie, but I do think we should visit somewhere historic, perhaps from the historical view Winchester would be better?
-
"Not too formal" Absolutely agree with you but "a purpose" might be a good idea?
just a thought
:)
-
As I hope has been clear from this thread I think it desirable for those attending to decide so far as feasible the program, there are I think at least 2 purposes 1) The formal program of the meet. 2) The wider purpose of Rootschatters meeting and getting to know each other.
-
I like Winchester, but that is probably because I know it better than Portsmouth and it's a smaller place.
Lizzie
-
Suggest this as a topic for discussion and hopefully refinement.
Date 20th March 2010
Place Winchester
Purpose Visit City Museum view local history collection open until 4pm then followed by informal get together and snack (or meal?) in a local pub or restaurant.
-
Thats fine by me Roger, count me in please,
im not very familiar with Winchester, but again if you need any help just shout.
Ivor
-
Sounds good to me Roger. I'll ask my son, who works in Winchester if he can recommend any local pubs/restaurants.
Lizzie
-
Thanks for that Lizzie, Hopefully this appeals to those others who have expressed interest. FOR INFORMATION OF ROOTSCHATTERS INTERESTED, i shall be otherwise engaged for a few days, expect to resume operations Friday 4th December.
-
Roger
Hope you got my e-mail with suggestions from my son and husband, re local pubs/restaurants in Winchester.
By the way, 6 and 13 March are now both out for me, so hopefully 20 March will be OK for everyone else.
Lizzie
-
I have your email thanks Lizzie, and think that now is probably the time to confirm the date as 20th March, the place Winchester, details as previously posted. Can I have numbers interested now please as I want to make some bookings for eating etc. or at the very least sound out a variety of caterers etc. Thanks.
-
OK, count me in Roger. Hope we get enough Rootschatters to make it worthwhile.
Lizzie
-
Put me on the "possible" list; might have some family duties then. :-\
Nanny Jan
-
Sorry I have to pull out I will be on my way back from Llandudno on that date. But hope you all have a great time.
-
Keep them coming!!!
-
not sure yet but possibly in the dark bout that area x
-
No doubt we can ensure you meet up with the group.
-
Since I have only two definite takers at the moment and two more possibles, I wonder whether a change of venue or date, or both would appeal to other Rootschatters? Like your thoughts please.
-
If Portsmouth is still being thought about I would like to come - I live just outside Portsmouth and would be willing to help! :)
-
Portsmouth is a distinct possibility, remember it was only eliminated because Pompey were at home! The biggest problem at present is lack of numbers, we do not yet have sufficient to make it worthwhile in my opinion.
-
As there are only 3 (at maximum) definitely interested in this meet including myself I think the time has come to cancel any proposal for March of this year. Sorry! If there is sufficient interest shown (please pm me!) then I am willing to give it another try say from June onwards.
-
Regret that due to personal engagements I shall be unable to proceed with the organization of a meet for the foreseeable future. Anyone else in the South of England willing to have a go? I should be delighted to attend providing the time and place are right. Sorry guys!
Roger
