Hi all,
I live in Co. Durham in northern England and a large section of my family came over from Ireland at the turn of the last century.
After years of waiting I have finally had a look at the English 1911 census and much to my delete the place of birth was finally on their census details. Up until now all I've ever had is just Ireland.
Now I have 'Derry' as a place of birth. I know it’s not much, but it’s a heck of improvement from Ireland :0) I have a mother Martha, and three sons Thomas, Joseph and William Crawford all sons were born in the 1870’s. I think I have found 2 sisters as well, but I’m not 100% sure as they arrive in England already married.
The family was called Crawford and they moved to England in the 1890's. One of the sons came over first then everyone else followed apart from their father, William Crawford. I think he must have died in Ireland as their mother Martha Crawford is referred to as a widow on the 1901 census. I have checked my local records and he did not die here in Co. Durham. I suppose he could have died on route.
That is the sum total of my knowledge. I don’t even know how they got over here. Could someone suggest where to go from here? Are their any passengers’ lists available online? Is Derry to Co. Durham, via Liverpool their most likely route? Could they have coe over via a coastal town in Cumbria
Are there any surviving Derry records that may be of use to me?
They were C of E. in England so I presume they were Protestants while growing up in Ireland.
Any suggestions welcome. And I do mean anything. I am well and truly at a dead end.

Can you give us an idea of birthdates of the children/possible children?
Derry can refere to both the city or the county so you'll still need to narrow down an area to find more records.
Ireland was part of the U.K. so records weren't kept of people travelling between Ireland and England, Scotland and Wales.
Civil registration of non-Catholic marriages began in 1845 but to find the marriage of William Crawford and Martha we'll need to know her maiden name. Have a few possibilites but need names and ages of children to confirm my suspicions.
Also, Martha's age would help.
-
Thanks,
I can only guess their DOB by their ages on the census returns.
But Martha Crawford c. 1838 I have no idea what her maiden name was. There are no clues. I can't even guess. She died just before the 1911 census was taken. If only she had lived 2 more months!!!! :0)
Joseph gives his place of birth as 'County Tyrone, Ireland' no mention of Derry.
It's Thomas who gives Derry as his place of birth. I have presumed since they were brothers that they were all born in the same place.
William c. 1869
Thomas c. 1871
Joseph c. 1873
and Martha c. 1876
-
Sorry I missed out a brother.
There is also a older brother James Crawford born c. 1863.
He gives his place of birth as 'Ireland, Co. Derry'. I think!
The handwritting has a great big smudge over the 'Co.' And Derry is originally writen Berry. And has been crossed out and replaced with Derry. Oh the joys of Family History.
I am happy to return any favours with a look up on my side of the UK is anyone needs help. I can help with Newcastle, Durham and Carlisle archives.

My great grandfather and his brothers were not born until the 1860's and 70's . The 1841 census is jumping back a generation. I don't do that as a rule I take my family tree back one generation at a time. I need to find the family c. 1880 to be sure it's them.
But thanks for the website. I'll look into it.

I am A Crawford My fathers name was James Allan From Londonderry brothers Harold Hazlett Samuel and Jack any info would be greatly appreciated.

PO1,
Think your dad maybe on the 1911 census, available on line via 'National Archives of Ireland' web site.
At Northland Road Londonderry City, aged 1, has lots of sisters and a brother Oliver.
Any probs finding 1911 census post message.
Also do a google for 'Ulster Covenant' and search their site for Crawfords at Northland Road.
I have other records i will have a look for them on.

The 1911 census is available on National Archives, Dublin website (they should be adding 1901 census sometime this year)-

If you're looking for all of the children of William Crawford and Martha Moody, I might be able to help. I'm descended from their son William (1865-1934).
In total, William Crawford and Martha Moody had 10 children.
To my knowledge, none of their children moved to England.
One son did move to New Zealand.
Andrew Crawford (1851-1933) m. Mary Wham (from Illinois)
Andrew emigrated to the USA on August 21, 1871. They had 5 children. 3 sons and 2 daughters.
James Crawford (1853-1928)
James moved to New Zealand. I have been in contact with his descendants and am adding their information to my family tree. There are 3 generations after James' arrival in New Zealand.
John Crawford (1855-1914) m. Margaret Hutchinson (1878-1941)
This family emigrated to Canada. They had 7 children.
Margaret Jane Crawford (1858-1938) m. Frederick Nordeck (c1870 Iowa City, Iowa - ?)
Margaret emigrated to the USA on May 22, 1885.
Mary Crawford (1861-1865) She drowned as a child.
Henry Crawford (1862-1933) m. Sarah Pollock (1864-1939)
Henry stayed in Ireland and farmed the Crawford family farm in Glebe, Co. Londonderry, Northern Ireland.
I have another 2 generations of Henry's family in Northern Ireland if someone wants more information.
William Crawford (1865-1934) m. Ada Dianne Homer (1867-1938)
This is the branch of the Crawford family tree that I am descended from. William and Ada are my 2x great-grandparents. William emigrated to Canada at the age of 18 (in 1883) to work as a farm labourer. William and Ada settled in Ontario near Newmarket, Ontario and had 6 children.
Joseph Crawford (1867-1868).
Joseph Crawford (1870-1937)
He never married. He was a tailor by trade. He is buried in Omagh, Co. Tyrone, Ireland.
Martin Crawford (1872-1951) m. Margaret Hutchinson (1878-1941).
Martin emigrated to the USA with his sister Margaret and his brother Andrew. He emigrated on October 15, 1897. He settled in Iowa City, Iowa.
He later moved to Canada in 1925 and married his brother John's widow Margaret Hutchinson.
As for the Crawfords who emigrated to County Down, UK the only thing I can think of is that they may be descended from another branch in the Crawford family tree. I can trace my family tree back one more generation from William Crawford and Martha Moody to William's father - James Travers Crawford Senior and his wife Margaret Hunter. None of their children emigrated anywhere other than Iowa, USA...if they left Ireland.
Hopefully, that information helps!
