Title: Yates Derbyshire
Post by: Annmoo on Tuesday 17 November 09 10:58 GMT (UK)
Hi Peeps,

I'm trying to find my gg grandfather Henry Rodwell Yates.  He appears in the 1891 census in Leicestershire and is listed as being born in Church Gresley, Derbyshire (new to me as I thought we were always originated here in sunny Leicester).

Any help at all would be greatly appreciated as I'm trying to create a family tree for my mother who has never known much about her roots and has just turned 70 years old!  Good xmas present if I can manage it.

Annie xx

Oh Crikey it was rumoured he had 21 children but I suspect some of them must have been counted twice!

I think I'm going to need a big book for mum's pressie, he just wont believe her eyes.

I'm going to make sure both your names are in it to as "The most helpful people ever"

21 - Blimey!!  :o

The 1911 census would tell you the number of children they had. (Nodoby's allowed to do look-ups, sorry!) www.1911census.co.uk

Who are you descended from? I see Harry Beaumont marries an Elizabeth Scarratt in 1903. Children Gladys May born 18 May 1904, George born 19 April 1908 and William Ronald 21 Feb 1917 according to his army records.

(Happy to help btw, no need to mention me on your pressie! ;D)

Harry Beaumont is my great grandfather, his son George Harry was my grandfather.   ;D

How on earth did you see William' army records!  I thought you had to apply to the home office or something (told you I was a numpty)

My brother was given the middle name of Beaumont after g. grandad but we don't know where it came from, maybe we'll find out at some point!

Oops, sorry - it's Harry's WWI Army records that are accessible, not William's (which would be WWII)

Not getting anywhere quickly with the Beaumont name but I think I know where Archibald had his middle name Lee from ...

Remember Louisa's maiden name was Blockley

1861
RG9/2287 38 7
Leicester St Margaret
Wharf St

John Blockley, head, 37, Tailor, b. Claybrook Leicestershire
Sophia, wife, 38, Milliner & Dress Maker, b. Hinckley Leicestershire
Emma J, dau, 14, scholar, b. Leicester
Priscilla, dau, 11, scholar, b. Claybrook Leicestershire
Louisa, dau, 7, scholar, b. Leicester
Mary A Bradshaw, visitor, unm, 19, Shoe Binder, b. Leicester

Marriage Jun 1844 Leicester 15 118
John Blockley to possibly Sophia Lee
Title: Re: Yates Derbyshire
Post by: Tati on Tuesday 17 November 09 20:02 GMT (UK)
Extracted IGI christening (from www.familysearch.org)

John Blockly
25 May 1825
Claybrook, Leicestershire

parents Joseph and Hannah

other children christened to Joseph and Hannah Blockley in the same batch:
Richard, 12 Apr 1814
Charles, 23 Nov 1817
Joseph, 5 Mar 1820

The only marriage I can see on the IGI for a John Blockley to a Hannah is:
Joseph Blockley - Hannah Brooks
23 Nov 1804, Claybrook, Leicester

Not Hannah Beaumont then!

Re Army records didn't know you could access any service records!
Title: Re: Yates Derbyshire
Post by: Tati on Tuesday 17 November 09 20:11 GMT (UK)
Possibly not on Sophia Lee's side either ...

1841 census
HO107/601/3 35 20
Hinckley, Leicestershire
Back Lane
Thomas Lee, 50, Stocking M
Mary, 50
Sophia, 15
Maria, 15

All born Leicestershire

(ages were rounded down to the nearest 5 on the 1841 census)

Possible marriage (if Thomas and Mary were in fact about 55)
Thomas Lee - Mary Harrold
25 Oct 1805 Hinckley

Yet again not a Beaumont.

(These are just possibles, really, you'd obvioulsy need certs to back up the findings)

Yes, of course, you're right although they do all seem to fit, just like a never ending jigsaw.

How long have you been doing this?

Are you asking because we seem to be progressing quickly? It's not so much a matter of expertise as of what is quickly available and above all identifiable online - in your case you're lucky to research pretty uncommon names! :D

Thanks to all who responded to Annmoo's requests re. Henry Rodwell Yates.
I am a Great-Grandson of HRY and found your conversations on the internet when starting investigations
on him. I am the grandson of Horace C Yates and  the son of Kenneth R C Yates. HRY's Leicester addresses are both on the edge roads of Spinney Hill Park - at that time one of the very best addresses on the fringe of rapidly expanding Leicester. I too was told by my father he had had 21 children but have only so far found 14 surviving to censuses.
Annmoo: Can I be of help on this corner of HRYs enormous brood ! ? You're descended from
(Harry) Beaumont Yates ?

Yay I have a living relative here on Roots!!!!  Hi Anthony.

I have actually got all 21 names of the children but I am always hungry for information on the family.  I grew up around Spinney Hill and knew that we had family dotted all around there.  I do get a little confused at times as to who is full or half blood related lol.  Mum always talks with great affection of her grandfather Harry Beaumont and she tells me that her great decorating skills came from watching him at work.  She even named my brother Gary 'Beaumont' Mills.  I do remember my mum's half sister Linda who I occasionally see and who gave me some wonderful photographs of great grandparents and great aunts.  I know that my grandmother Annie and her husband split up in 1944 and he moved in with the lady who later became his second wife (Linda's mum).  Apparently they only lived a few doors away in Earl Howe Street.

We will definitely have to share info although I don't know the best way to do that.  Any ideas??

Hello Cousin Annie !
Your Mum who must have been impressed is my 2nd cousin and you my 2nd cousin once removed if I understand these things correctly.
Are you in Nottingham or Leicester or where ? I'm in Evington Leicester about 1.5 miles from Spinney Hill.
I'm trying to send you a Personal Message with my Email address ( but failing). I'm very new to Rootschat as well as Ancestry Research, would it help if you sent one to me ? Are you on email ?
Horace Charles Yates lived Mostyn St off Evington Rd but died 1937 so I never knew him. Dad was always v proud of HRYand the Rodwell link  , said he had 2 houses for all the children.
HCY had Phillip (moved to Sheffield),Kenneth(dad),and the 3 beautiful sisters Mary,Marion and Margaret all sadly now passed away. I got into this through investigating maternal side after GGgrandfathers will was discovered in an attic and was published in Burton Mail. Maternal side lived Oakthorpe about 2 miles from Ch Gresley tho parents met Leicester. Love to know about the other 7 kids - never seen photos only of HCY who was just 4 foot 11 ! Hope we can get in touch.

Hey cousin I received your message and have emailed you  ;D

I will get my wizz kid daughter to scan the photos and email them to you.  Some of them look like an episode of a Victorian drama!

Although I'm a Grannie now I feel like Mike and Wendy (Diddymiller) are the 'parents' of the Leicester forum,  all knowing, all seeing, experts on anything to do with Leicestershire families and the rest of the crew are so helpful so if ever we get stuck we can always ask for help on here  ;)
