HI,
I live in Liverpool and visit the Liverpool Record Office a couple of times a week.
If anyone has anything they would like me to look for please let me know.
I can get copies of most Church of England parish marriage registers printed from microfilm although some are held in the Archive room and have to be copied by hand. :)
-
Hi,
Noticed your kind offer of a look-up and wondered if it would be possible for you to look up the following marriage for me please?
EVELINA REVILL SMITH and RALPH ERNEST POYSER, September qtr 1890, St. Peter, Liverpool
Evelina was my Gt-Grandmothers sister, and what I really want to know is if Evelina named a father. She was baptised on the day of her parents marriage (Joseph Revill and Hannah Smith), and is on the 1881 as Evelina Revill. She's married as a Smith, and is named on Joseph Revill's will as his 'reputed daughter', so there's obviously a bit of confusion going on here.
Thanks in advance.
Sasha. :)

Thank you Viv. :)

Hi Viv
I would be very grateful if you would do a couple of look ups for me at the Liverpool Records Office, please?
1. Edward FLAHERTY & Ann MCDONALD Jun 1831 at St. Nicholas church, Liverpool
2. Mary PLEVIN & Thomas MELLOR (MILLER?) January 1834 at St Peter's, Liverpool.
Many thanks
Dorothy

Hi Viv,
Thanks for the information and quick reponse.
If you can scan the document you can attach it, but I've not tried this so I'm not sure how to. I've sent you a private message with my email address in it if this would be easier.
Thanks for your help.
Sasha.

Hi Floridagirl
"Is there some way I can send a copy of the certificate to you through this site? I'm not very good with computers and I'm still learning."
Do you have a scanner, are you able to get a digital picture of the marriage certificate?
If the answer is yes to both the above, you can attache it to your message by the 'attach box' at the bottom.

Hi Viv
you made it here then :)
I was wondering what info is needed to look on the 1861 and 1851 censuses at Liverpool records office. I found my mother in laws ancestors in 1871 when I was there the other day but didn't have a chance to look earlier.
Are they name indexed or address and would you be able to search them if I give you the info or is it too big a job?

Hi,
Hoping your offer may end my years of brickwalls:
I am trying to find the following birth:
born: 14 Aug 1859 (1st child)
Anna Theresa ENGMAN / INGMAN / INMAN
father: Charles (Carl) O. ENGMAN, b.1825 Finland
mother: Mary MURPHY, b.1829, Ireland
2nd child (Sara) died before Dec 1863 at 2 yrs (prob.b. 1861)
per statment in Mary's will.
Charles was a sailor on Cunard Shipline, in Liverpool.
Mary was a devout Catholic, but I have no idea which church.
Their 3rd child b. on ocean to USA Dec 1863: on this ship
passenger's list the name is spelled INMAN, but Mary signed her
name w/ "X", so could be inaccurate spelling.
Of interest is her husband is not shown as a passenger {maybe crew?} on this ship. It appears she was traveling only w/ her 3 yr old Theresa, in December, and giving birth...wow, what an experience!
I have tried FreeBMD & Lancs BMD, nothing...
I believe I have the correct date and location. I want so badly to prove they actually existed where they claimed to be.
I thank you for any help or ideas where else I might look.

Hi,
Very generous offer .....could I ask if they hold copies of Liverpool newspapers c.1862? I wish to try and find an Obit or funeral notice.
Notification of death was listed in the Liverpool Daily Post of 30 MAY 1862 (death was the previous day) of George DEAKIN Esq. Salt Proprietor of 13 Falkner Square. Liverpool.
I'd like to see if the Obit or funeral notice appeared in a subsequent edition as this may help placing other family members. If I knew such an article existed I could presumeably request a photocopy (as I do from my local Records Office)
Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hi florida girl,
I've just had some info from the ceredigion archives with reference to my 4x grandparents, who spent most of their lives in Aberystwyth.
Summarised from the 41, 51 and 61 census' (censi??)
Robert Molineaux and his wife Mary were born in Liverpool and that in 1851 their respective ages were 54 and 50. All their children were born in Aberystwyth.
Robert Molineaux's occupation was listed as a painter and decorator.
Their first children Emma & Henry were born in 1826, so Robert and Mary had married before then. I cannot find the marriage in Aberystwyth however, so I assume that they married in Mary's home parish.
Marys surname was Caldwell. In the registers for St. Chad's Kirkby there is one Mary C. b. 4th Feb.1800, bapt. 23.2.1800 daughter of John and Ann Caldwell.
I cannot find any further details about Robert.
Could you possibly look up a marriage between Robert Molineaux and Elizabeth Caldwell, about 1824? This would give me a possible lead to his parents.
Thanks

Any chance you have access to the 1851 Census in Liverpool? I am looking for David SPRATT and have the following info from an index:
vol. 24 Rodney Street Ward (part)
SPRATT David p9A
I am particularly interested in anyone else that may be enumerated with him. I have no information on his parents and would like to find anything to get me beyond this roadblock!
Thanks!

Hi,
I went to the library today and checked the Daily Post for the date you gave but found no obituaries. I enquired as to which newspaper would be best to look in and was told that the Liverpool Echo only started after 1862 and neither the Echo or the Daily Post carried many obituaries, it was only for really well known people.
I tried to look in the "WORTHIES" (people of note) but the records for that didn't start till around 1870.
I did have a look through the WILLS and found George Deakins will listed.
Do you have a copy of this? I wrote down the details in case you haven't.
He was very well-off wasn't he?
There is another source I can try, but it's held in the Archive room, you have to order the records you need and they bring them out to you about every half hour and I didn't have time to do this today, but I'll try next time I go.
If you have a marriage date for George and Ann Deakin I could look for any children they had.
Sorry about the obits, but if you want the details of the Will, let me know.
Regards
Viv. :) :) :)
Hi Viv,
Many thanks for going through the papers for me.........I told you he was elusive didn't I? ;)
I do have the will thanks, as soon as I had a date of death I applied for a search at York and was successful! I have been able to track his children through the census but am trying to establish links to his siblings as I believe they were all established Salt Proprietors shipping through the port of Liverpool, but George Deakin was the only one who moved to Liverpool from Northwich, Cheshire(via Weston Point). I have one confirmation on the will of a sibling connection but was hoping an obit may have had a list of male mourners which in the past has proved a very useful source.
Thanks again for all your endeavours on my behalf.

Hi Odessa,
Have you got any details of the marriage of George Deakins parents? Also the dob of George. I could look to see if there were any other Deakins born around the same period.
It might also be worth me having a look through another couple of days in the paper for the next few days in June (I think I looked through till the 2nd) If he did have family still over in Runcorn it may have taken a bit longer to put anything in the paper.
It might take me a few visits but I think it's worth a try.
Let me know what you think anyway.
I've still got the other things to look at in the Archive room as well, something might turn up there.
Hi Viv,
George Deakins probable siblings were Thomas, James, John, William & Fanny. George Deakins business interests were in mid-Cheshire(salt interests in Wharton & Over and a Boatyard on the R.Weaver) All the probable siblings had salt interests in mid-Cheshire and all shipped along the R.Weaver through Liverpool. George being the most successful...........I get the feeling he ran the business out of Liverpool and had managers in at mid-Cheshire.
All the other siblings remained domiciled in mid-Cheshire and after the death of George, his 2 sons and widow also moved here for a period.
I know his youngest son George Henry Deakin was buried at Southdown-Lane Cemetery, Liverpool.[*possibly Smithdown Lane Cemetery, also known as Toxteth Park Cemetery- doubt arises from Newspaper report and my hopeless knowledge of Liverpool]
The George Deakin who is sibling to the above was born 30 NOV 1809 at Witton (you would probably know this these days as Northwich) to James & Fanny Deakin
A marriage of a George Deakin to Ann Rhodes 03 Apr 1839 at Runcorn cites father as James Deakin, so are these one and the same? Apart from a shared occupation and the mention of a younger brother William of Witton St in his will and census p.o.b as Witton.......that's all the evidence I have to link George to James & Fanny and the other children. Pretty conclusive I grant you, but I would have preferred a direct reference to a relative or sibling which is what I was hoping for from an obit.
Don't spend too much of your time on George...... I'm more than grateful for your efforts so far, it's just as important knowing where he isn't
Odessa.

Thanks Viv! I really appreciate that you can do this. I'm hoping to find some clue that will lead me to more Spratts. This family started out in Liverpool and ended up in Preston, but I've yet to discover much more about them.

Hi Viv,
Would you have access to the 1871 census returns for Wavertree? If so I'd be really grateful for a look-up for my 2xGt-Grandparents (hopefully they are at Ash Grove, Wavertree).
They are Joseph Revill, born Jan 27th 1846 at Walkeringham, Nottinghamshire (fruit merchant) and his wife Hannah, born c.1846 in Hook, Yorkshire. They should have children Evelina (3 years) and Elizabeth (1 year).
I'm hoping that they are in Liverpool for the 1871 census - they baptised their daughter Elizabeth in Luddington, Lincolnshire in December 1869 and the next I know of them is when my Gt-Grandmother Rose Hannah was baptised in October 1873 when their address is 12 Ash Grove, Wavertree, West Derby. In 1881 they are living at 42 Smithdown Road, Toxteth Park.
They don't appear on the Luddington 1871 census.
Thank you,
Jo.

Hi Viv,
I married and Evans too, my father-in-laws family are from Liverpool and originally Holywell. I am researching them with Donna (munchies) who is my sister-in-law. We haven't really got that far with them as we've been researching in Liverpool mostly.
We have Richard Evans b-Holywell 1830 married Mary Ann Roberts
His son Richard b-Holywell 1866 married Sarah Ward
His son Richard Haimes b-Liverpool 1898 (father-in-laws father) married Sarah Weaver.
Let me know if you think there's a connection.
Ange ;D

Hi again Viv,
Yes it was the McKittrick/Maddocks marriages I asked you for, Donna got them for me when she went last week.

Hi Wendy,
Had a look at the 1851 census, I could only find one David Spratt listed, he was a shipwright born in Ireland.
Could this be him?
If he moved to Preston there were plenty of docks there where he could have worked.
I tried to check him out by the reference number on the census, but I couldn't find him listed on the fiche that he was supposed to be on.
Where did you get the info (vol no etc)?
Have you got an actual address for him in 1851?
I looked through the entire fiche, but I think there are another two in the same section so I'll try them next time.
Do you think he married? I could try searching through the St Caths for a marriage if you could give me an idea of when he was born.
Sorry I couldn't give you better news but I'll keep looking.
I don't seem to be having much luck with the censuses lately.
Regards,
Viv. :( :(
Hi Viv
Thank you so much for looking. I do believe that must be him because his marriage certificate lists his occupation as Shipwright. I didn't know that he was from Ireland though. He married Mary Ann Stevenson, June 24, 1852 at St. Andrew's Liverpool. They had 6 or 7 children: David (1855), Eliza (1859), Emily (1862), Thomas (1864), George (1867), Marion (1869) - all born in Liverpool. Emily (single woman) had my gt-grandmother Clara Spratt (1882) in Preston. Clara came to the states with her grandmother Mary Ann in 1893 without her mother. Another mystery.
I don't have an address for David in 1851. The census information I had came from a bound book in a genealogy library. It was volume 24, Rodney St. Ward (part) Public Record Office REF HO 107/2182 Section 1. I was hoping that I'd find him in the census to get some more clues to his parents. I found an Eliza Spratt on FreeBMD who died in Liverpool in 1852 and wondered if it could be his mother since his first daughter was Eliza.
Any clues you find along the way are most appreciated.
Thanks
Wendy :)
-
Hi Viv,
Thanks for looking at the 1871 census for me.
Rose Hannah Revill was baptised 20th October 1873 at St. Peter's, Liverpool (as Rosanna Revill). The address of 12 Ash Grove, Wavertree, West Derby, is from her birth certificate.
Thanks for your help.

Hi
If you could give me any help with my family search i'd be very grateful coz i've hit a snag!
My great grandfather is called Victor de Newson Jones on his marriage certificate to Marion Tranter August 15th 1897 at St Annes Church in Liverpool. It also states that he is a chemist.
By the time my grandfather was born in 1903 his father is calling himself John Edward Jones, druggist.
Im assuming that Victor de Newson Jones and John Edward Jones are the same man as I cant find another marriage for Marion Jones ( nee Tranter) or a death for Victor de Newson Jones. Also the chances of Marion marrying two men called Jones who had the same profession is too unlikely!
At the time of their marriage my Great grandparents were living in St Anne Street Liverpool and when my grandfather was born the address was given as 82 St Annes Street.
Is there any chance that you could look for John Edward Jones and Marion Jones in the 1901 census for me? I have traced Marion Tranter and her family back to Scotland in 1800 but have hit a blank with the Joneses!!
Do you also know of any way I can trace a chemist of that era living in Liverpool? By the time my grandfather married in 1934 his fathers occupation was stated as licensed victualler. Is there a list of publicans from this time period in Liverpool that you know of?
Thanks for taking the time to read this message and for any help or advice you can give.

Hi Wendy,
Is there an address on the marriage certificate at all?
Or is it just the St Andrews parish?
If it's the St andrews in Rodney Street, it was a Scotch Church, as opposed to a Scottish church which I presume was a type of Anglican or non-conformist Church, and their marriage records are listed as Register Office and you can only get copies of them by sending off for them, so I'm glad you have the copy of the certificate.
Next time I visit the library I'll have a word with the staff and see if I can get any more info for you, but I don't know if I mentioned that the library closes down soon for it's annual two week inventory, so it might take me a few weeks to find anything.
Fingers crossed!!!
Bye for now.
Viv. :) :)
try and find anything
Thanks Viv!
The marriage certificate says:
"1852 Marriage solemnized at St. Andrews Church in the parish of Liverpool in the county of Lancas(hire?)
June 27
David Spratt age 30, bachelor, shipwright, 14 Argyle Street, father James Spratt, laborer
Mary Ann Stevenson, age 21, spinster, 14 Argyle Street, father John Stevenson block maker
Married in the Church of St Andrews according to the rights and ceremonies of the established church after banns
in the presence of Robert Ainsworth & Jane Ainsworth.
Does that info tell you anything about the St. Andrews? I did find out that the Ainsworths lived at 14 Argyle Street and I don't know what their relationship was to the Spratts or Stevensons. I found an 1853 Liverpool street directory at historicaldirectories.org and the Ainsworths were the only ones listed at that address.
So far I haven't found any more on James. I thought the census would be my best chance at finding something else about the family. So far I haven't found a birth record for David in the IGI.
Thanks again for your help in looking. I understand the library will close and appreciate anything you may uncover when they open again.
Wendy :D

Hi Viv
Thank you for the generous offer. Perhaps you can help me break down my brick wall. I'm trying to track the origins of my 2nd great grandfather, Francis Bennett (father Denis, mother Hannah) who came to Australia in the 1860s. From certificates in Australia, it seems he was born somewhere between 1830 and 1840.
I think I have his family in 1851 - could you look at the census details to confirm that Denis is the head etc as I haven't got ages or relationships:
1851 Census Liverpool - Ref 2180/1 - 172A
BENNETT Bernard Horse Shoer Ireland
BENNETT Dennis Corn Porter Ireland
BENNETT Hannah -- Ireland
BENNETT James -- Lancs, Liverpool
BENNETT John Scholar Ireland
BENNETT Michael Errand Boy Ireland
BENNETT Patrick Scholar Lancs, Liverpool
I have been told that this entry is on LDS film number 87179 (I don't know if you need that).
Also on the same LDS film is:
1851 Census, Liverpool, Piece 2180/1, Folio #160A
Bennett, Frank corn porter Ireland
This could be my Francis
and on on LDS film 87182 is:
1851 Census Liverpool - Ref 2181/4 - 834
BENNETT Arthur - Roper Lancs, Liverpool
BENNETT Catherine - -- Lancs, Liverpool
BENNETT Frank - Dock Labourer Lancs, Liverpool
This could also be him. He is supposed to have been born in Liverpool, but there is a possibility that it could have been Ireland.
If it is possible to trace Denis and Hannah in the 1861 census, that would be tremendous.
I think I have their deaths:
Deaths Mar 1866
Bennett Hannah 50 Liverpool 8b 173
Deaths Mar 1867
Bennett Denis 57 Liverpool 8b 109
I have been following a Patrick Bennett (1881 and 1891), who I am sure is the one from 1851 as he names some of his children Hannah, Denis, Francis and Bernard.
Any infromation at all that you could get about Denis and Hannah would be wonderful, as what I have written above is all I have.
Regards
Shelley

Hi Shelley,
The record office closes down soon for it annual two week inventory, I've got quite alot of lookups to do but I don't think I'll get them all done before it closes, so I'll keep your details on file, and have a look for them when it re-opens, it could be a month or more until I can get back to you.
Sorry about that.
Regards.
Viv. ::)
No problems Viv. I've been on this one for years - another month won't hurt.

Hi Floridagirl, Could you look up for me please a Jane Slater Lang b 1830 Glasgow, father Mathew, or she maybe Jane Louise Slater Lang. She was training to be a Doctor, as we have her medical bag from Glasgow, from around 1855 / 65. She was married here in NZ 1865, unfortuneately thats all we know about her. Cannot find any trace of her, which boat she came out on, but can pin piont it down to the year, according to her death cert.
Many thanks Dovedale

Hello Dovedale,
Have you thought of browsing the medical registrars ???
There is a book they published every few years or so which list the doctors by name and a brief account of their history.

Hi Floridagirl, Had a look at Medical Registrars, no luck, with Jane or Mathew Laing. All we know for sure is that she was born in Glasgow 1835 m NZ 1865 and that she was some sort of Nurse/Dr, but i think never quailified, although praticed nursing in NZ, but not registered.
Thanks Dovedale

Hi FloridaGirl!
Just seen your kind offer & wondered if you might be able to do a look up for me on the 1841 census please?
I am trying to find a family by the name of SCOTT who were at 47 Mill St Toxteth in 1838. They are as follows:
John Scott, Heraldic Engraver
Ann Scott , Wife
Jonathan Jarvis Scott b. 1838, Toxteth
There could also possibly be a daughter, also Ann b. abt 1840.
I think they were in Devon St on the 1851 census, but I don't know at what point they moved.
Any info would be much appreciated.
Thanks

Hi Florida Girl

Hi Floidagirl, Sorry to hear you are out of action, hope you recover soon.
Found on Scottish Doc reference to a Mathew Lang in Airdrie, Daimuir Dunbarton, Priestdale, of course have no idea if they are the Mathew i'm looking for or not.
Found on Jane's medical case 6x4", a lot smaller than i remembered it to be.
Thompson & Capper
Homoepathic Chemists
Bold St
Liverpool
Not sure if that is any help or not. It still contains most of the 16 bottles and contents. Sister in laws think she may have been a midwife.

Thank you Viv for all your hard work. I greatly appreciate your efforts. The Byurke family has been difficult to trace. I will just have to keep trying. You helpled me to narrow down my search by one less WIlliam Burke! ;)

Hi Shelley f,
Can you send me your e-mail address through the Rootschat team? My son has got copies of the censuses you wanted, they've obviously got the ages on them, which should help you in your search. We still have one copy to get for "Frank", don't know how we didn't photocopy that one, but we'll get that for you next week.
I'll get my son to send them through to you as an attachment as soon as I receive your e-mail address.
Bye for now,
Viv. ::) ::)
Hi Viv
Thanks very much for your efforts. I'm getting excited at the prospect of what I might receive.
My email address is Moderator Deleted - please contact RootsChat with your username to get the email address
Thanks again

Hi
Can I take you up on your kind offer for Liverpool Look Ups
William Ferriday Evans married Eliza Alcock in Liverpool first quarter of 1868, vol 8b, page 23. I'm after the father of both William and Eliza (don't think the mother was recorded then) together with the marriage date
and any address or profession shown.
Keeping my fingers crossed
Regards
Gerry

I'd appreciate any help you can provide me. I live in the U.S. and the researchers for my family have seemed to have stopped researching at the first Tyner that came from England. I don't know what kind of an effort they've made but I'd like to try and go further.
Nicholas Tyner (likely spelling then was Tiner but other variations may be Tinner, Tynes, or Tinor) was born in either 1637 (most likely) or 1650. He supposedly came to America with five children and no wife from Liverpool. I'd like to at least verify that he did come from Liverpool.
Please let me know if you ever find anything on Nicholas or the Tyner (Tiner?) family. Thanks!

Thanks for updating me. I couldn't reply by any other route than this! Anyway, glad you still have my details, and whenever you can manage the lookup is fine :).
Cheers

Hi Viv
We are both looking for a William Evans! It's the middle name of 'Ferriday' that is proving difficult to trace. William Ferriday Evans was born in 1844 in Liverpool and Eliza Evans (nee Alcock) born in 1845 in Mansfield.
A son, Alexander, was christened at St Peter's in 1873, so I guess William's married was in a CofE church.
I'm trying to link to the only other ' .....Ferriday Evans
I have been able to root out, a John Ferriday Evans born in 1827 in Liverpool.
Look forward to what you might find
Regards

Hi,
Would be very grateful if you could try the 1851 census for me (I assume it's indexed!)
I am looking for John Ellis, born around 1839 (but apparently not in Civil Registration), definitely in Liverpool, and possibly in the West Derby/ Toxteth area.
Also for his wife, Janet Letitia Jones, date and place of birth unknown. Only concrete information is that she died 1880 and was buried in Toxteth Park cemetery.
It would be wonderful to find a marriage for them (eldest child born 1868), but I would have no idea which parish to start looking in.
John Ellis is a dreadful name to research in Liverpool, but I have some hopes of Janet (could also be Jenet or Jennet with a Welsh ancestry) because of her middle name.
Many thanks, and good hunting on your own tree!

Hi Viv
Thanks for looking :)
I have just got back from holiday to find your message.
I do have the Marriage certifcate of William Butler and Bridget Laverty. Williams address is given as "116 New Henderson Street, Toxteth Park" on 12th April 1991. The only other possible address I have is one from the 1881 census "3 Robertson Street, Toxteth Park" although I have never been able to confirm that this is the correct entry.
Thanks

Hi Sue,
I'll see what I can find for you, it'll probably be sometime next week or the week after when I start.
Have you got the burial details for Janet(through the Order Books)?
If not, I'll get my son to check them, (he's very good at burial records).
You can usually find who paid for the grave and whether it was private or public and you can also find who else was buried in it, maybe other family members.
What years have you checked for John Ellis's birth?
Sometimes I have known them to be registered a few quarters after the birth and on occasion they've been registered the following year.
My mother in law was born in 1915 and registered in 1916, so it completely threw us off the track.
Bye for now.
Viv.

Hi Floridagirl. Can u please do a lookup for me. I am after information on a Flamank Family. I have a marriage of Samuel Flamank sep 1/4 1853 west derby 8b 735. I know his wife is Maria. I am after her surname and anything further on Samuel particularly Fathers name if Possible age. (Anything really that may help) He was from Newton Abbot Devon. I presume this marriage is Liverpool. I know that in 1851 he was a general merchant in Liverpool. I dont have 61 or 71 Samuel died in 74. Maria died in 1889. Her death notice lists her as widow of Samuel of this parish and Newton Abbott. The address at death and at 1881 census was 153 Kensington. In 81 the children all seem to be brokers of some type either wool cotton or general. Would be very gratefull on anything you can tell me on this family. Thank You.

Hi Viv
I do think Matilda was the maid and also I have a copy of the marriage cert . Have looked up Eleanors death on BMD and Familysearch but have drawn a blank. Would Eleanor have been able to revert to her maiden name as I have found a marriage on Lancashire BMD in 1897 about the time my granddad was taken to the home the name Eleanor M Smith to William G Toll in Liverpool let me know what you think and if there are any other avenues to explore
Regards
Sylvia

Thanks for trying. Brick wall looms as 1. these were the youngest 2 children in the family and all others had been baptised as soon as practical (not as a bulk lot!) and 2. St Peters was the last city centre parish unsearched.
The family were in Orange Street according to Trade Directories if that gives you any other ideas?

Viv,
Could you look up a marriage for me in the Church of England Marriage records? A Samuel Shields and Isabel Gipson were married in Paull, East Riding, Yorkshire on November 30, 1795. I am hoping that their parents or witnesses to the marriage will help me track them down. I have hit a road block with my Shields family.
Thank you!- Kristin ;D

Hi we live in the midlands, but just on our way down to somerset for 2 weeks. Did the marriage say whether Richard Maloney was a Widow or his age thanks again. We will be in liverpool in the autumn, might see you at the William Brown lib.
Sue
Richard Maloney father Richard of Liverpool
Alice Campbell father looks like Jacobus which I think is James
The address looks like 27 Queensland Street.Edge Hill.
The witnesses look like Franciscus (Francis) Morgan
and Margareta Morgan
These could possibly be husband and wife.
If you want me to send you the copy let me know.
Liverpool does have a great record office, whereabouts are you?
Regards.
