I'm having trouble locating the marriage of George J Lawrence who shows up as being married to Clara A ? from Preston, Herts. Both were born around 1869, George in Pimlico.
Thanks
Lottee

this is the couple with 'married' shown in the 1901 census column - both in Service?
You could try going back to earlier census and see the surnames of Claras born Herts, Preston 1869 +/- a few years ?
That might help searching on that/those names for a marriage - Lawrence is often mis-spelled ....

This may be the marriage:
LAWRENCE George James
BARKER Clara Maud
1d 715 Lambeth Jun 1896
They married on 5 April 1896 at St Mary, Lambeth. George is indicated as being a traveller, aged 28, and the son of George Lawrence (deceased), a General Dealer. Clara is indicated as being aged 19 and the daughter of John William Barker, a fishmonger. They are both living at 84 Kennington Road at the time.
Some checking with earlier censuses is required.

I'd be inclined to go with Clara Harvey, born Preston Herts c1869.
She's in service in Fulham in 1891 ....
I suspect they didnt marry tho .... ;)

I think it may be the other possible marriage - in Luton
http://www.freebmd.org.uk/
Clara Matilda HARVEY
George Joseph LAWRENCE
both on ref: 3b, pg 860
Luton - Sep Qtr 1895
In 1901, they are in Fulham, Clara is age 32.
In 1891, in Fulham is:
RG12 / Piece: 45 / Folio 95 / Page 14
16 Stanwick Road, Fulham
Servant: Clara HARVEY 22, single, Cook, b Preston, Herts
One of 3 servants iin the household of Paul ALLISTON and his family

Hi Ambly,
I agree that the marriage in Luton appears to be correct.

nice one Ambly - I should have used FreeBMD - Ancestry doesnt pull that out using Lawr* as spuse surname witha Harv* main party - guess its only FreeBMD that implements that feature pre-1915 ? :-[

Hi All
Me, I've always found FreeBMD for events up to 1930'sh to be easier to handle & manipulate, especially since you can * in any place and it'll take it if it's quiet on the server ;) Sometimes packs a sad if it's busy though & you've tried a really wide search!
I also suspect that Clara's birth is indexed in FreeBMD as Matilda HARVEY, Dec Qtr 1869, Hitchin
In 1871 in Preston Hitchin Herts, Clara HARVEY age 1, b Preston Hitchin - with her parents Joseph & Ann.
In 1881 in Luton Beds, Clara HARVEY age 12, b Preston, Herts - with her parents Joseph & Ann
Full details of these 2 census if you wish, Lottee!
Cheers

Hi
Thank you all for your suggestions. In the 1901 census it shows Clara with the middle initial clearly entered as an "A" and I couldn't find any Clara A's on freebmd, only the same as you have suggested. They are in service so you have the correct couple. Couldn't find them in 1911 :'(, which is rather a shame, as couldn't see if there were any children. Will look over all the info you have given me and see how I get on.
Regards
Lottee
