Hi, I have a list of Lord Provosts of Glasgow if anyone wants to see if past relatives were ever amongst them. Starts with John stewart 1450 and goes onto - 1988

Hello Marcie,
If it is still available, I would be very happy to see a copy of that list, as my Stewart/Stuart family (we believe) came from Lanarkshire prior to their move to Argyll in the early 1600's.
Having read the last will and testament of several Stewart's, the position of provost has arisen on a number of occasions, hence my interest.
With grateful thanks,
Charles. 8)

Hi Charles,
A basic list of names and dates is also available on the Glasgow City Council website at:

Best wishes

Dear Rockford,
Thank you so much for the link to the list.
This is absolutely what I was looking for and a confirmation of my long held belief that we were the provosts in Lanark, until removed by parliament in 1648. We were then invited to Argyll by the Campbell's as Covenanters, to become the Ballies and Tacksmen of the region.
It is also worthy of note, that a Campbell replaced a Stewart, immediately after his departure!
With my grateful thanks,
Charles.

Hi,
I see that someone has placed the link that you wanted. So you are ok now?
There is also one for Edinburgh.
when I applied for them they sent me paper copies of each one with photos for some of them. I was surprised to see how far back Provosts went, well passed 1400. Wasnt the earliest around the late 1290 something?
