Title: Mary Ann Spanton / Chalk
Post by: heart247 on Sunday 15 November 09 06:29 GMT (UK)
I'm trying to find the parents of Mary Ann Spanton. She was born in Leith, Midlothian, Scotland about 1808. She married Thomas William Chalk about 1826 in Durham, England. She died 18 Jul 1892.

It is possible that her parents are James Spanton and Eliza Head, however i haven't found any source to confirm it.

I would appreciate any help.

thanks

hi heart  :)

i take it this is mary ann chalk died sunderland 3rd quarter 1892 age 85
does it have anything on her death certificate ?
the 1881 census has her birthplace as leith scotland
only thing on the IGI is a submitted entry for birth 1808 with the parents you
have mentioned
there is a tree on rootsweb that has her parents born in austria  ???

there is however an extracted entry for the following -
elisabeth spanton baptized 23rd june 1811 north leith midlothian scotland
parents james spanton and eliza head

There is a Mary Ann Chalk aged 52 in the 1861 census on FreeCen visiting with the Surtees family in Monkwearmouth. Another visitor there is Jane Head.

If this is your Mary Ann, then given the possible parents, could this be a relative?

I know it's a long shot.

Nice one Kirsty - looks like the right Mary Ann.

Although this Mary Ann is shown as born Sunderland in the 1861 census she appears in the 1851 census in Bishopswearmouth as a widow living with her 20 year old son James - and she's shown as born Leith.

The things you miss!!

I've just had a look at the 1861 record spotted by Kirsty.  The wife of William Surtees whom Mary Ann is visiting is Eliza Spanton Surtees - surely not a coincidence!

Appears Mary Ann's children were James and Eliza - the forenames of the putative ganparents at the start of the thread.

William Henry Surtees married Eliza Chalk Sunderland, 1855 Q2, Vol 10a, p487.

This all appears to link Mary Ann Chalk to the surname Spanton.
