I raised this query once before, but I am still at odds over exactly where BROOMHOUSE is located. Census entries indicate "Broomhouse, Lanarkshire", however, google searches show "Broomhouse in West Edinburgh", as well as "Broomhouse near Glasgow" and finally "Broomhouse in Midlothian"....... Is there more than one Broomhouse in Scotland? Or - are all these places in Lanarkshire?
My apologies for my ignorance regarding Scotland's geography but hope someone will take pity on me to explain the differences, if any.
Thanks very much for any and all suggestions.

The Edinburgh and Midlothian ones are not in Lanarkshire. The only Broomhouse I know of in this county is the one between Uddingston and Carmyle.
Have a look at this link.

The only Broomhouse I know is in Edinburgh. I wouldn't say it was "rough", but its favourite son, Graham Souness was regarded as "a bit soft".

I just did a quick search for 'Broomhouse Lanarkshire' and this reference came up from a posting on a different board last year
" It is approximately 7 miles east of Glasgow Cross, east of Parkhead &
Tollcross. I believe that it was on the extension of the Tollcross Road, but
maybe on the extension of London Road.
These two roads run roughly parallel with each other.
My memory of it c1942 is that it consisted of an old block of brownstone
apartments on the south side of the road. "
No idea how accurate that is, but it sounds from that that it did exist as a place but no longer does, or possibly is just the name of a local area? Interestingly 2 businesses come up using the Broomhouse name, and they are both in Baillieston Road, Uddingston, so perhaps it was just a local area?

That is my understanding too, I live near Broomhouse.

My thanks to Lodger, Hibee, Maggie & Cammie for your very helpful info. My problem has been that I'm searching for the birth of a Jeanie SMITH who was born, according to the Ellis Island Emigration papers, in "Broomhouse, Scotland". When I attempt a search on ScotlandsPeople, I am unsure of which District/City/County I should be looking at. As you can imagine there are far too many SMITHs to just take a guess. I was hoping to be able to scroll down the District column in order to make a more informed guess. Do I choose Midlothian, Glasgow, Lanark, or ????????
Oh well, my problem, not yours, and I thank you again for your efforts on my behalf. Much appreciated.

If the census entries say Broomhouse, Lanarkshire then it will be the small village/hamlet just south of Baillieston on the outskirts of Uddingston.
Daldowie crematorium is classed as being in Broomhouse

What year was Jeanie born?
-
Sancti:
Jeanie was born between 1885-1886:-
Marriage record indicates 1885 (20 years old in 1905)
Ellis Island Emigration indicates - 1885 (23 years in 1908)
1891 Census - 1886 (5 years old)
1901 Census - 1886 (15 years old)
Jeanie travelled to the USA with her son in 1908 to meet up with her husband who was living/working in Pennyslvania, and she and her husband probably both died soon after, leaving their son (my father) an orphan - this according to family rumour. No further substantiated particulars can be found after Jeanie's arrival in 1908.
I appreciate your interest - thank you.
-
Do you have the marriage record?
When and where did she marry?
-
I took the liberty of checking your website to get more details on this family. It appears the parents did not marry until 1893 so I looked for Jane/Jeanie Wallace or Smith in the correct area (FYI Broomhouse is in Old Monkland Western District).
There is an entry for Jane Scoullar Smith, also indexed under Wallace. The actual entry reads Jane Scoullar Smith, illegitimate, born 1885 May 20, Boghall, Broomhouse. Parents Matthew Smith coal miner and Marion Wallace domestic servant. Both parents registered the birth.
Hope this helps
Joyce
-
Boghall was on the north side of Hamilton Road near to Mount Vernon. From www.old-maps.co.uk it looks to have been near the old dog track.
From your website, the Park Street where Jeanie was staying is in Motherwell
-
To Sancti and Joyce:
Sancti - Jeanie's marriage took place at Blythswood, Glasgow (1905).
Joyce - Thank you, thank you, thank you! This is indeed the correct birth entry for my Jeanie, as her grandmother's name was Jean SCOULAR! And, the fact that she was born illegitimate confirms other particulars I have re this family. Jeanie's father (Matthew Smith) was married twice; his first wife (Janet Lindsay) died without issue and Matthew and Marion Wallace met and had 5 children, 2 of which I have confirmed as being illegitimate, and now Jeanie's birth makes 3.
As well, your comment that Broomhouse is in Old Monkland Western District is what I was looking for in order to make an informed search on ScotlandsPeople for Jeanie.
I should mention here that my website is in definite need of updating; Jeanie's father was NOT Matthew Thomson Smith b 1858 Hamilton, Lanark, but was Matthew Smith b abt 1850 Ayrshire. As well, Marion Wallace b 1859 Lanarkshire is incorrect, but should be b 1858 Ayrshire. I have some work to do....
I would again like to thank you all for being so patient and so very helpful.
:D

Is this the family's 1891 entry:
Matthew Smith 40, coal miner b. Galston, Ayrshire
Marion Smith 32 b. Galston, Ayrshire
Matthew Smith 9 b. Glasgow
John Smith 7 b. Glasgow
Jean Smith 5, b. Broomhouse
Elizabeth Smith 3 b. Hamilton
Robert Smith 1Month b. Hamilton
Andrew Riddle 15 boarder, coal miner b. Hamilton
Address: Windsor St 68 S, Hamilton

The informatiom came from your web page
Also, on the marriage certificate the place of residence for Jeanie is stated to be 48 Park St., Dalziel.
Park Street still exists in Motherwell today
-
Monica: Yes, thank you, I have the 1891 census info. The 2 children I had previously identified as illegitimate were Elizabeth and Robert. I now have confirmed Jeanie/Jane's birth so still have the birth records of Matthew and John to find.
Sancti: The Park Place, Dalziel address was where Jeanie was residing at the time of her marriage. I'm going to attempt to locate photos of the area if possible - thank you for prompting me to do this.
-
My Secondary school was in Baillieston and we use to pick children up from Broomhouse, It is right next to where Calderpark Zoo (Glasgow Zoo now closed) is, there is still houses there and Daldowie is not far away. There is a road to Baillieston wich they use to call Hangmans Brae, also on the main Glasgow Road there used to be the Smugglers Inn which is now Demolished.
-
Many thanks for this John. Since my original posting I have received from a Lorna Allison a booklet entitled "Broomhouse A History" authored by Bill Brandon, which describes the village in detail, including photos. She also supplied me with a hand-drawn map showing me approximately where the old structures, etc were and what is presently in their places.
The book describes the position of Broomhouse in this manner - "Broomhouse is situated on the extreme east side of Glasgow with its boundaries being on the north side, the Rutherglen to Coatbridge railway line, the south side by the River Clyde, on the east, the North Calder Water, and the west being an imaginary short line drawn from Mount Vernon Bridge at the junction of London Road and Hamilton road to the River Clyde...."
Does this fit with your knowledge of the area?
Regards,
Pat
-
That is accurate. I used to walk up and down the Hangman's Brae every day going to and from work.
-
My thanks once again John - much appreciated.

looking on Google maps Park St Motherwell no 48 was probably around where the War memorial is at the junction of Coronation St ( which looks like it was a new build housing project in say the "thirties")
-
I actually stay near Broomhouse, as there is a place nearby where I eat with my family, also my brother had a flat on Hamilton road, The area is changed now as th M74 is next to it. Near to Broomhouse they have the Mount Vernon greyhound track, many people round that area had Greyhounds due to the track being local.
Check out the site here for Calderpark Zoo (Glasgow Zoo) gives some information on the area, as Broomhouse is part of the same area, you coulsd see some animals from Broomhouse.

I'd be interested too!
I have one or two from Broomhouse and hundreds from Muirside & Muirhead, five minutes up the road where I presume 'The Baulks' is now.

Cammy and Anne: The booklet does not have a particular section regarding the coal miners' housing arrangements, but the following sites will be of help I think.

The Lanarkshire Mining Industry

John: You asked me to remind you to forward a picture of Broomhouse when you returned from Africa. If you are not too busy, I would still very much appreciate any photos you can let me have. Many thanks.

I was raised in broomhouse and stayed there from when I was born till I was about 15, my dad still stays there, he was even born there! We stayed in lusshill terrace. The book broomhouse a history was indeed written by Bill Brandon. He stayed across the road from us, and died several years ago, his wife still lives there. It was my mother who typed the book for him, she has a mention in the acknowledgements, about having to cope with 2 young children at the time of print, we are now 25 and 24! My dad has a copy of it somewhere, I will have to dig it out. Any questions you have regarding broomhouse let me know and I will try to answer them as best I can, I just hope people still read this thread as it seems to have been dormant for a while!

Rory, first off welcome to Rootschat, and what a great start, arriving with really interesting information plus an offer of help.
About your concern that nobody will see it - this is just to let you know that the system most of us have set sends us an alert when a new reply to one of our posts is made, and there's always the 'new replies to your posts' section at the top of pages, so there is a very good chance that Tunbridge and all the rest will know you posted. To make sure I'll send Tunbridge a PM (personal message) which you won't be able to do until you've made 3 posts - if you reply to this that'll make 2.
I hope you enjoy Rootschat as much as I have and that we, in our turn, can be of assistance to you at some point
-
Hi thanks for the information, it's a very interesting site!
-
Hi Rory - how nice to hear from you. It is indeed a small world - imagine your mother being instrumental in the book about Broomhouse. Lorna Alliston has sent me a copy which is well written and has give me an image of the village where my grandmother was born. The photos included in the book were of great interest as well.
Should I have any questions I will certainly take you up on your offer of assistance. Thank you so much.
Best wishes,
Pat
