Could anyone suggest how I could find out more about my great great grandmother Matilda Wiley. On my great grand parents marriage certificate 24 Dec 1880) the name of Matilda's father is missing. It just says "farmer". My great grandparents were married in Killelagh Parish Church of Ireland in Londonderry. Any help would be appreciated. Matilda was married to Robert Mellon.

Hi,
I am a bit confused by the number of "greats" used to describe Matilda but I have a record of the marriage of Robert Mellon to Matilda Wilie (sic) in Killelagh Church of Ireland on 12 DEC 1854

Killelagh Parish Church is in Swatragh, Co. Londonderry.

Hello Mary,
Thank you for your reply. I am so grateful, but would just love some documentary evidence for Matilda's father. Do you have this?

Matilda's marriage is after the start of civil registration and will list her father's name and occupation (father's name given by Mary above).
Index to civil registration is online and once you find the year, registration district, volume and page numbers you can order the marriage certificate if you are interested in documentary evidence.

Still looking for more about Matilda Wiley married to Robert Mellon in 1854 in Killelagh, N.Ireland.
I've had another look through my research and have copy of marriage registration. (I obtained this at Magherafelt District Registry Office).
Robert's father is given as John Mellon, but name of Matilda's father is missing. Aghadowey has given me a name (John Mellon) but would like to know where this came from?
-
Thank you to everyone who has taken the time to respond. However I still do not have Matilda's father. It may be a John Wiley born 1827 (AHF info). John was one of 12 children born to Maggie Matilda Ormsby and William Wiley. Family trees exist for some of the other children which Roots folk have shared, but have not found one for John as yet. I may have to be contented with getting as far as Matilda Wiley and Robert Mellon which is great anyway.

Hi, I am interested in the Matilda Wiley connection you were researching a few years ago. Matilda and Roberts son William ended up in Australia via Scotland, so Matilda is also my two times great Grandmother. Would be really interested in anything you have found about them. Much appreciated.

Hello there - good to hear from you. So your great grandfather William Mellon is brother to my great grandmother Jane Mellon who married Charles Martin? If this is correct, I'm afraid I don't have a lot of info on Jane or her parents or any further back. I haven't done any FH for a while, but would love to have another search in Ireland. The John Wiley b 1827 that I suggested was given as Matilda's father by a Rootschat person, and they said they'd got the info from a Baptism, but I was never able to track this down.
I do know a little about Jane and her move to Scotland with five children, then another four then her death at just 42. I don't have a single photo of her. I'm in touch with several first cousins from this (my dad's) side of the family - some in Scotland, others in Ireland. None have any further info or photo of Jane.
Would love a photo of your family. I am so nosey to see ANY family traits!!

Hi June, I'm going to have to learn how this works to send photo's. I only registered to follow up your posting. Somewhere I have a photo of William I am sure.
I didn't know about Jane Mellon, so far I had only found William (1866), James (1869) and Margaret (1872). Your posting also shows Joseph (1874). Where does Jane Mellon fit in?
The names I had for the fathers of Robert and Matilda were John Mellon and John Wylie. These came from the IGI. I have never been able to find out any further back. I have Irish ancestors on both my fathers and mothers side and they are very hard to trace.
I know that William married Margaret Dingwall in 1892 and lived in Greenock, Scotland. They had four children. I have little information either re James or Margaret. From the census I think James was living with William and his family in Greenock in 1901. But nothing after that.

I'll look forward to your photo of William, and sort out one or two of our families. At the bottom of this message square there's an arrow for attachments. Might work ok. I have a photo of a pipe band in N.Ireland and my dad had written on the back James Mellon. Probably the James you have with a date 1868. He turned up with the family in Airdrie, Lanarkshire, Scotland. I didn't know about your William, or Margaret.
I'll look forward to more contact and sending you the info. We're busy with village digs which has taken over the summer!! I'm looking forward to completion - just 3 more digs to do!
I've managed to attach 3 photos with this message. The one of my mum and dad was in the 1950s soon after we'd moved from Coatbridge, Lanarks to east London. Both now deceased. I have one brother James Haggarty Martin.
Hope you enjoy.
Hope you enjoy.

You'll need to remove your email address from the previous post and use the PM (Personal Message) system in order to exchange such details. New members need 3 posts to use it so Richard will be able to after one more post.

Hi June,
Have some photos for you. The first is the only picture I have of William and Margaret Mellon. William died 1945 so I am thinking this was taken in the 1930's. This was taken in Renmark where he worked as a 'channel walker', he followed the irrigation channels and repaired them where they had collapsed. Hard to see his face because of the hat. The second is of John and Doris Mellon. John is eldest son of William, and my grandfather. You can see his face well and he does look a bit like your father. He also would have been in his 60's when this was taken. He was very much a scotsman all his life, never lost his accent. William and John were both Freemasons, but I don't recall any music, so the pipe band is interesting.
Maybe we can work out how to do the 'private message' thing and talk some more.
Richard.

Thank you for photos. So interesting to see them. I think you should be able to use the personal message facility now?
If you give it a try then I can send my email address to you.

You have me searching out my FH files on Wiley/Mellon part of the family. Rootschat were very helpful I see at the time. They gave Matilda Wiley's father as John Wiley, and this was recorded in the Civil marriage registration. Apparently missed from the church record. I had another theory which led to the Ormsbys and Lindsays of Cork, but I now believe this to be ERROR on my part, but at least clarified this part of the tree.
I'll try and update my tree for you to view, and include the remainder of Agnes Jane Mellon, my great grandmother's siblings. She married Charles Martin in Magherafelt, N.Ireland in 1883. They had 5 children when they went to Scotland to work in the mines in about 1900. My GF William Martin was the oldest of the children. Jane had another 4 children in Airdrie, Lanarkshire, and some died very young. She also died at about age 42 (this is all from memory just now), leaving Charles with a number of children. He re-married within a year or so, and had another 6 children! We met one of his grandchildren from the second marriage, but no photos became available of Jane nee Mellon.
Regards Joseph Wiley - it seems I got the list of Jane's siblings from the IGI including Joseph, and have had another look on the free search. The only Joseph is one whose estimated year of birth 1844 would fit, had apparently moved to America, and died in Chicago on 23 Oct 1917. He was a Ticket Agent with Eco RR.
Regards Robert Mellon's father - John Mellon - I can find only one entry. This is in the 'Ireland, Landed Estate Court Files, 1850-1885. There is limited info in the free search. You need to subscibe to request a copy, which I didn't want to do just now. But as his occupation on robert's marriage cert was 'farmer' it's quite likely he had land to leave. There is a farm where my grandparents William and Jane nee Haggarty Martin lived. This was in County Antrim and there was some hint that maybe it belonged to the family.
There was a lot of coming and going between Ireland and Scotland, depending on work etc. and our family likewise. My dad was born in Airdrie, but his dad was born in Ireland, and returned there I think when my dad was in his teens. he went with them, and always loved it, and met my mum over there. She was on a holiday from Coatbridge. I am now rambling ...! Irish documentation can be hard to track down, but ...
We'll get there! And it's lovely to have a Mellon/Wiley connection. THANK YOU for contacting. It will be nice when I can email.
