Hi, this is my first venture onto RootsChat.
I was amazed to see William Drewery b. 1826 Boston and his wife Reservoir [nee Smith] b. 1823 on your Gypsy and Travellers Site. They were my great great grandparents.
A kind person had actually found their marriage date and their eldest son Robert's birth in Wymondham in 1841.
Reservoir died in 1859 in Melton Mowbray.
I have researched from 1861 but have never been able to find anything out prior to that date. I also noticed on one your sites that the census records for Wymondham in 1841 are missing.
Another puzzle is if Robert Drewery's birth is on bmd why not their marriage?
Is there anyone who can help to fill in more details/background please.

Nieve,
Welcome to Rootschat.
I'm sorry I can't help you with your request. However, it looks to me as if you have posted your query on the "completed requests" board - so a lot of people won't look at it as they will think your questions have been answered.
A moderator may spot this and move the message for you or you could try posting again on the general Leicestershire board.
It took me ages to get my head around the different boards - I had to ask for them to be moved to the correct board several times. :)

Hi Nieve and Brie
Thanks for your message - I've moved the topic to where the experts live!
I see you have a similar post on the Travellers' board, so helpers should check there too, in order to avoid duplication of effort.
Kind regards, Arranroots ;)

Here's the earlier thread http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,362531.0.html
I have my own DRURY/DREWRY ancestor from the Boston area. His will (1797) suggests that he was of fixed abode-
Last Will and Testament of Robert DRURY of Algarkirk, Grazier...
First I give to my daughter Mary EVERITT wife of Ely EVERITT the sum of £10. I also give to her the feather bed and beding of the new chamber Bed.
I also give to my granddaughter Esther EVERITT the sum of £10 to be paid when she attains the age of 21 years.
To my daughter Elizabeth DRURY the sum of £20. I also give to my daughter Elizabeth the bed that she sleeps in, a chest her cloaths is in and half a dozen silver spoons marked "E FAND", her mother's gold rings and one year's board allowed to my executrix.
And lastly all my ready money etc to my daughter Esther PHILIPS wife of Robert PHILIPS who now lives with me and appoint her sole executrix.

Here's the marriage
Marriages Sep 1841
DREWEY William Melton Mowbray 15 261
SMITH Resovoir Melton Mowbray 15 261
If he was the WD that Catone found in 1841 http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,362531.msg2403502.html#msg2403502
Perhaps he was bap 8 April 1822 Boston, son of William and Mary
Their children included
1815 Susannah
1819 Hannah
1822 William
1825 Anne Selina
They were possibly William DRURY and Mary WYAN who married at Boston 26 Dec 1815.
-
Many thanks to Brie, Arranroots and Geoff-E for your speedy help and interest.
Geoff-E - I don't think that your Drewery's are the same family - they seem too wealthy!!!. I will do further investigation into the William/Mary marriage [Will's parents] especially as Will the younger also had a daughter called Selina. That could have been coincidence. Nieve.
-
... son of William and Mary
They were possibly William DRURY and Mary WYAN who married at Boston 26 Dec 1815.
Possible burial
1 May 1835, William DRURY (44)
The bad news is that Mary appears in 1851 as Owner of houses born Horbling
so would seem to have been Mary WYAN 1781 Horbling.
-
To Geoff-E. Thanks for your interest. I have sent for the marriage cert and will have to be patient. I feel such a fool as I tried every possible spelling of the name Drewery but didn't try Drewey. Life is a learning process! Nieve
-
I just searched Res with no surname ;)
-
Hi Geoff -E. I have the marriage cert. of Will and Res. I have posted them on the Traveller's Board. Nieve.
-
Hi Nieve,
I have just found your posting from some years ago, I am also related to William and Reservoir, also my Gt Gt Gt Grandparents, not sure if you managed to find out any information, I have some, let me know how you got on and if we have any info we could share.
-
Not directly related to your request but, my G.G.Grandfather married a Martha Drewery (b. 1832-d. 1861 from Irby) in May 1856 (believed to be at Gt. Coates).
The name Drewery became a Christian name down through the males and stopped with my Father (I, alas, only managed to produce a single female).
If linked to and of any use to you, I can provide some information down from there.
Regards... Andrew.
-
Hi Yekal, This is a blast from the past. Yes, I have quite a lot of info. about Reservoir but nothing on William. Who were your ancestors?
Have you the census info about their children so that I don't repeat myself. Have you looked at the Travelling People Site going back to Nov. 09?
Nieve.
-
Hi Neive,
My ancestors are William and Reservoir, William is my 3rd Great Grandfather, I have census for William 1841, 61, 71, 81. P.O. directory listing 1876, White directory listing 1877, Kelly directory listing 1881, death 1887, marraige 1841 and his will. All I have for reservoir is Death and marraige cert.............I have also what appears to be another 2 marraiges for William.
Do you have any of this information?, and does it tally with mine?.....Did you manage to get any further back as I could only find a mother for Williamm and not much for Reservoir.
-
Hi Yekal,
Firstly. I think William must have been quite a wealthy man according to his will!!!
His daughter Selina was my great grandmother, which child are you descended from? Was it Amelia, Hezekiah, or William?
Here goes! With the excellent and very kind help from other Root Chatters I learnt the following:-
Reservoir Smith married William Drewry 5.7.1841 Wymondham. Robert's rank or profession was Gypsy. Reservoir died 9.11.1859 aged 36 at Timber Hill, Melton Mowbray.
Her mother was Evening Smith b. 1792 in Dunston, Lincs and was christened 17.12.1792 Churchover, Warwick.
She died in Caunton, Nottingham March 1872 aged 79.
Evening was married to Robert Smith c.20.12.1792 Whitwick, Leics.
Robert was the son of Wisdom and Hannah Smith who were married 3.3.1782 Bletchingham, Oxon.
Is this enough to be going on with or do you want more because there are a lot of Smiths!
I'm sorry but William is still a mystery.
Nieve.
-
Hi Nieve,
I am also related from Selina, then their child Hubert Charles.
I assume you only have the same information as I do regarding William?, or should I see if I have anything additional to what you have?
Before I add any of the information you supplied to my tree could you please confirm that it can all be verified, don`t want to add things that are incorrect.
Are you in the UK?, as a lot of my other side that I have been tracing are in Scotland and Canada, but till now apart from direct family have not spoken with any relatives on this side.
Regards
-
Hi Yekal,
Is this the Hubert that was a postman in Beswick in 1911. Where was he in 1901?
Yes, I am in the UK, in the northwest .
Stephen Johnson, their father is also a mystery. Selina never married him because she married a Sam. Eckersley in 1889 and gave her name as Drury!
Why is he a mystery? Could it be because he was a married man and did a 'runner'. I was always told that he was a very well educated man, but very, very strict and that they off together with both families disowning them! Very romantic. In the 1881 census he gave his birthplace as Floor, Northampton. which I am led to believe was a well-known gypsy area.
By the way did you know you were descended from gypsies?
Drewery;- The nearest I have ever got to William is a Henry Drewery aged 24 born in Boston in the 1851 census classed as a Glass Hawker!
I have Will and Reservoir's marriage and her death certificate Unfortunately. there are no fathers/family mentioned on the marriage one.
I repeat with the help of other very experienced folk I have a lot of other info i.e.
Reservoi - c. 14.12.1822 Ab Kettleby, Leics. She was registered at as Sesevoy Smith - Father Robert described as a gypsy man of Folville.
As a taster Robert Smith, who was married to Evening, was the son of Wisdom and Hannah Smith who were married in 1782 Bletchingham, Oxon.
They got around a bit!
It gets very complicated and you need a huge notebook.
Nieve.

Hi,
This is getting interesting now, yes this Hubert is the Postman in 1911, I have a lot of help on my tree from a friend who is a Geaneologist, the nearest match we can get for 1901 is: "Possible match under the name Robert Johnson living in West Ham as a boarder ages 22 years a Boiler maker born Warrington-not confirmed"
All My Johnsons are in the North West, and my Mum was untill she moved here to North Wales.
I have birth of Stephen, cunsus 1851-1881, death 1888, and death cert, unable to find any marraige though, but on census Selina is listed as "Wife"
Yes I did know I was descended from Gypsies, but only when I discovered Reservoir, I have not spoken to the rest of the Johnsons yet about the Gypsies, so don`t know if they are aware, but my mum was shocked and refused to believe me at first.
I have quite a bit for William, and a death cert for Reservoir, like you no parents names............the biggest problem we found researching the Drewery side, there were so many alternative ways to spell the name, Drewery, Drury, etc.
Now I know your information is correct I will fill in my missing pieces, let me know if there are any pieces of information you require and I will see what I have, but know for sure I have not got as far back as you on the the Reservoir line.
-
P.s. Do you have any of your tree available on the web anywhere?
-
Hi Yekal,
No I am sorry I do not have my tree on the web, but I will help.
Firstly, are you looking at the Stephen Johnson on Freebmd, born Northampton in 1842. If you follow this man through all his life you will see that he is not our SJ. In 1881 he is with his wife Sarah in Northampton still making boots. That was a red herring I found years ago.
Romanies liked to be under the radar and very often they used 2 names - a romany one and an anglicised version just to make life difficult. Sometimes you will see on a census written by the enumerator ' caravan in field - 6 men 3 women and some children. Very helpful. Obviously he must have been nervous of them.
Start by looking on 1841 for Robert and Evening Smith in Leicester and see where it takes you! Robert classed himself as a Brazier and horse dealer! They were Reservoir's parents. I am drip feeding you! I think it is a bigger sense of achievement when you put all the pieces together yourself. I hope you agree!
The travelling people site on rootschat is invaluable.
Nieve.

Ok, will start my homework, the Stephen Johnson I have was indeed born Nothampton 1842, but when weI followed him back we have him on the 1881 census as living in Warrington with Wife Selina, a Herbalist, born Floore.
I have been searching Robert (Brazier) and Evening Smith and have found this, not sure if any of the names look familiar to you?, but no Reservoir................
Robert Smith, Brazier, 50
Evening Smith, 40
Noah Smith, 14
Robert Smith, 11
Thomas Smith, 7
Also found this:
Evening SMITH , or Emily, or Eveline, or Evelin was born in 1792 in Dunston, Lincs was christened on 17 Dec 1793 in Churchover,
Warks., and died in 1872 in Caunton, Nottingham, England, United Kingdom aged 80.
Noted events in her life were:
1. She appeared on the census in 1841 in Wymondham, , Leicestershire, England.
2. She appeared on the census in 1851. not found
3. She appeared on the census in 1861. not found
4. She appeared on the census in 1871 in Arnold, , Nottingham, England. Emily Smith aged 76, bn Dunston, Leicesetershire
Evening married Robert SMITH , Brazier &Horsedealer, son of Wisdom SMITH and Hannah, and who may have been a brother of
Bethanasia. Robert was born in 1794 in Whitwick, Ashby District, Leicestershire and died in 1882 in Caunton, Nottingham, England, United
Kingdom aged 88.
Noted events in his life were:
1. He appeared on the census in 1841 in Wymondham, , Leicestershire, England.
2. He appeared on the census in 1851. not found
3. He appeared on the census in 1861. not found
4. He appeared on the census in 1871 in Arnold, , Nottingham, England. aged 80, Chairmaker, bn Ashby, Leicestershire
5. He appeared on the census in 1881 in Caunton, Nottingham, England, United Kingdom. aged 90, widowered, bn Leicestershire, Wigtoft
Look at that 1871 furniture maker, My uncle on the Johnson side also does that, as do I.
Hope I am on the right tracks here?
-
Hi Yekal,
Now you have got the bug!!
I couldn't count the number of hours I have spent looking for that Stephen Johnson. He only appears in the 1881. His mate Henry Chorley on the same census is also a missing link!
You have done really well and I must admit that I had to put these people on hold for years because of family.
However, here is the next instalment:-
Children of Robert and Evening Smith. [It would be easier if they weren't called Smith and they all knew where they were born]
Absolom c. 24.1.1813 Whatten, Notts
Isabel c. 10.12.1817 Wymondham
Resevoi c. 14.12.1822 Ab Kettleby, Leics. Registered as Sesevoy
St.Helean c.3.4.1825 Ibstock, Leics
Noah c. 8.7.1827 Billesden, Leics
Robert b.30.12.1829 Melton Mowbray
Thomas c. 15.6.1834 Harby, Leics.
I must add that these details have been passed on to me by another dedicated searcher.
I am sure I am not the only one whose life can easily be taken overKeep K by these ancestors!
It is frustrating that Will and Res. were married in Wymondham 5.7.1841 and parents were in Wymondham for the 1841 census.
Keep searching,
Nieve.

Nieve,
I have had no or little iternet connection for the past couple of weeks so have not been up to speed with my homework, but I have put in extra hours when I did have connection, I am struggling quite a bit with these Smiths, I seem to find lots of conflicting information, any way this is what I have found, hope it tallies with what you have or you have more than I do because I am at a stand still no with it.
Robert has a sister Bethanasia, and possibly Tabitha, and parents are Wisdom and Hannah.
Am I correct or can you enlighten me more?
Cheers
-

Hello everyone here. i am researching my own Drewery Lineage, my lot are located in East riding of yorkshire, Rimswell and Ottrington , am interested to see if these two lines connect up . I have a John Drewery born 1796 in Ottrington married Eliabeth Tripp born 1792 in Lincolnshire. Any thoughts?
