I have been researching this event for some time. I want to know what happened to the widows and orphans as there was only the parish to support them A considerable amount was raised by public subscription but I have only found an account of its work after about six months. I believe I have found three families from the 1871 census. Is there anyone whose family was affected by this event who could pass on any information please?
thanks

Hi
Do you know if any of the nearby houses were affected by this explosion.
-
As far as I am aware no houses were reported damaged from the map of the time not much housing was close to the works.
The Wolverhampton Chronicle of April 23 1862 reported " The Concussion was equally sever for the houses in the adjoining village of Ettingshall were shaken as though by an earthquake" No casualties from adjoining houses were mentioned in the inquest report. There was report of bricks being carried to the works of Mr. Sparrow a quarter of a mile away but nothing of damage to houses. on the opposite side of the canal was a boat yard , again the maps do not show many dwellings.
I hope this helps,
Phil

Hi
Thanks for that, just got all my family tree out and I think I am getting mixed up with New Mill Street Bilston thats where a relation of mine lived.
Thanks
-
I realise this is an old thread but my husband is descended from the Cornfields who were affected by this explosion.
-
Thank you for that . That is the first reference of the casualties that I have had of information of a family member. I wrote my master's dissertation on this incident.
thanks, Phil
-
I'm on my phone just now but will look out the family info when I get home. Would love to read your dissertation.
-
I think that I have sent my dissertation but the post seems to have dissapeared.
Could you let me know if the post was shown.

I'm afraid the post didn't appear. Apologies for the delay in replying, I got caught up with other things and in all honesty forgot I hadn't replied yet.
The Samuel Cornfield who was killed in the explosion was the 1st cousin of my husband's 4x grt grandfather, there are lots of Samuels in the tree and I get confused between them when trying to do from memory. Samuel's first cousin my husband's direct ancestor worked in the same place and was later involved in a boiler explosion and Burchills Hall Iron works in 1880. I think that's how I got mixed up.
Back to Samuel, as far as I am aware the company paid no money to the widows and orphans however the local press did raise some money that was then distributed amongst the relatives of the survivors.
I am stil working on the family so plenty of chance to find more. I am leaving RC but if you pm me your email I will send you the relevant info if I have any luck.
