Hi Everyone, I am new at all this but am trying to establish the credibility of family stories. Apparently, the pines was occupied by several generations of the Martin family in the early 1900s.
Can any of you wiser people help me with this please?
Thanks Chris M

Have you traced your family back and had a look in the 1901 and 1911 censuses to see where they were living?
-
Hi, George Martin 1881 resident Middlesbrough yorkshire, 1901 still in middlesbrough but wife now her mother in Kenilworth.
Believe that the move would have been in the early 1930s to the pines as my father born 1924 spent some time there recovering from TB.

Sorry, forgot to say that 1911 census shows still in middlesbrough.

Hello Chris,
Have you any idea what The Pines might have been? Was it a sanatorium possibly?
Reason I ask is that there was not much in Pantasaph, most of the buildings were a monastery and nunnery, plus a few farms.

I see that a search for The Pines produces may "hits". The address is The pines, Monastery Road, Pantasaph, CH8 8PN.
Flintshire Record Office may hold the Electoral Rolls for the 1930s. You might establish the facts that way.

There is a message missing in this sequence.
The Pines was a private house along the road from the monastery and adjacent to the orphanage apparently.
There was a BBC Local website but it has now closed. It made mention of the pines but no further detail
I have checked various listings and it is apparently now the office for a local firm
I have included a photo in case it jogs memories.
Thanks
Chris

Have you tried looking for them in earlier censuses? the date may be out, especially as family stories, whilst a good place to start, can often get mangled over the years.
-
Thanks Silvery,
I have done the normal census checks as stated previously.
The history runs that the family for at least 3 generations ran a public/ boarding house in middlesbrough called the Steam Packet Inn, Stockton Street.
At some point unknown but probably between 1924 and perhaps 1934, my Great grandfather was at the pines. I have photos of them there. I also have photos of 3 generations there. But as it is after 1911, I only have folk law to go by.
I suppose the question I am asking is directed more at Flintshire locals as I believe that up until about 10 years ago, the housekeeper was still alive in Pantasaph.
Does anyone have any history relating to the pines?
I am going to contact the current occupiers and also the local archive office (as previously suggested), but it is difficult for me to do more from France.
I appreciate all the help and suggestions from all you Rootschatters on this and other topics I have posted in the last weeks. Thank you all, you are great.

Hi Chris, I realise this post is from a long time ago, but I'm hoping you are still on here ???. I'm just finalizing the purchase of "The Pines" in Pantasaph :o and was wondering if you had any old pictures of it as I will be renovating/restoring it and need some inspiration, and also I would like to find out its history. Here's hoping regards, Chris.
-
Hi Chris,
Yep still here and still plugging away.
Great news that you are looking to renovate/restore.
Somewhere I have a couple of outside photos that may help.
Being an old crumbly technophobe can you suggest the best way for me to send the photos? On the forum or to a person address?
Best Regards, Chris Martin
-
Hi Chris, Great news :D :D I'm not much tech minded either, I've only just signed up here, so not sure how sending pictures works. I've tried the private message as I think thats the easiest way.

Photos sent to your email address

Hi Chris, Wow wow wow, I can't thank you enough. I will be studying these for quite some time. I really appreciate the effort you went to find these. It looks like a lot is still original!!! I'll send some pictures back once we have the keys in around 5 weeks. Did you ever get any more information on your family when they were at the pines. Apparently (and this has only been found out after we purchased the house) my grandfather was best friends with one of the gentlemen there. As yet we are not sure on the gentlemans name but he had three sons and a daughter. My grandfather was the God Father of his daughter. Unfortunately my grandfather has passed away, but I can ask around and get some more information on your family whilst they were there for you? Best regards, Chris.
-
Hi Chris, I had no luck obtaining further family info. I have no elder family members to refer to.
The family photo is interesting as there are 3 generations of the family present.
George William with his wife Celia, son Francis George with wife Margaret, their children Veronica, Patricia and my father, Bernard. Bernard was born 1924, hence why I put this photo late 20s early 30s.
-
Hi Chris, oooh my grandfather Len Davies was born 1925 (sadly passed away 2001) so there is a good chance that your father Bernard may be the gentleman that he was good friends with and I was talking about. Did he have three sons and a daughter? I was told one of the three sons was a roofer and he put a new roof on the Pines in the 80s ish. My grandfather had the local garage "Park View Garage". My Dad, Peter Davies went to school with the daughter. I will interrogate/ask ;D him further and see what we can dig up. My grandfather was well known throughout the area and there are many people with stories of him so there will be plenty of people I can ask about his childhood and may connect with your family.
Regards Chris.

Afraid it doesn't seem to fit. Although the family are photographed at the pines and that cecilia lived there for a while and that my father was sent there to recover from TB, the family was based around Middlesbrough and Coventry. I can't find any census records for them at Pantasaph, but am still looking. Finally, my father married a first time with no issue and the second time 1 son (me) and 2 daughters
-
Hi Chris, Oh well shame, I suppose that would be too easy. Anyway I am very keen to obtain as much about the pines' history as possible. In time this may provide some information regarding your family. If so I will contact you on here. Again thank you so much for the effort and sending the pictures, it really is much apprecited. Best regards, Chris D.

G.W.Martin is listed at The Pines Pantasaph in 1925 and 1927 in the British Phone Book database on Anc****.

Search results on the Phone Book database seem a little variable, whether because of input precision or OCR capability,I don't know.
However I have browsed individual years and can confirm that the enttry for G.W. Martin,The Pines,Psntasaph is present in 1925,1926 and 1927 but not 1924 or 1928.

Roger, thanks for taking the time to do that. Much appreciated.

Hi Chris have you now completed the purchase of the pines I have lots of information about the prior owners who used to live here the Priestley family. I may be able to help. I know the property very well.
-
ChrisLD is the person who is buying the Pines. I am Chris Martin. I am looking for martin family history who were at the Pines in the 1920s/30s and possibly later. If you have any Information that might help my search, that would be wonderful too :)

Hi, sorry for the delay in replying. Yes we have just moved in and are getting ready for all the trades to come in and start, understandably due to its age it needs a lot of work, so we are more like camping ;D. I am trying to create a detailed history of the house, especially a build date ???. Any history/pics you can give me would be much appreciated. My family has been woven into the local community for a long time and we are finding out lots of interesting things about it. The best so far is my grandfather was one of the Priestly's best friends (I don't have the name with me at the moment, Douglas? i think) and actually used to play in the garden as a child!! My grandfather Len Davies then went on to be the Godfather of his daughter. It would appear that there has only ever been two families in the house, the Martins and the Priestley's. I think the two families are also connected together by marriage at some point ??? ???
-
Hi ChrisLD,
I have a martin family tree on ancestry. I have not yet found a Priestly connection, but at the same time, I have not been looking. I will keep an open mind next time I am on. :)

Hello,
This has been a fascinating read for me. I grew up staying at the Pines and playing in the gardens, Francis Priestley (Fran ❤️) was my step grandmother and a wonderful lady. There’s a lot of history at the pines, I’m so pleased to hear it’s being looked after by it’s new owners!

Geoffrey the son was actually a convicted of a pretty nasty crime against a girl
