Hi,
I have started an e petition on the Number 10 website and would appreciate your help.
It is to " Reverse the decision made by DEFRA not to award medals posthumously."
My dear Mum was in the Land Army and sadly passed away before DEFRA decided to award them for their war efforts. Hilary Benn was quoted in the Timesonline as saying " The women worked tirelessly for the benefit of the nation and deserved to be recognised" I feel families should be given the option to apply for these medals should they wish to. As is the case with the Bevan Boys.
Please sign this if you agree.
The link they sent me isn't brilliant, go to www.Number10 .gov.uk, communicate them e-petitions, mine starts with "Reverse the dedision" etc. Started on Nov 5th by Debbie Hawes.
I hope you can all help.
Huge thank you to the moderators for allowing me to post this
Debbie x
Try this one http://petitions.number10.gov.uk/Girlpower/
Thanks xx
-
Sorry, forgot to ask you all to pass it on as I can only post it here xx
-
I will sign your petition as my Nan was in the land army, she recieved her medal as thankfully she is still alive. I know how much it meant to her to get it, and as her granddaughter I am very proud of the contribution she made.

I did try twice to find the petition, but failed, all the ones it brought up had been rejected, can you tell me what the rest of the petition is called so that it is easier to find
Sarah :)
-
Sarah, the link isn't brilliant have posted a link above but, if that fails, it was created on Nov 5th 2009. Or search for Reverse the decision made by DEFRA not to award medals posthumously.
I have emailed them to refresh it but, surprise surprise..no reply yet.
Thanks again

Found it and signed it a couple of hours ago. They said they are sending an e-mail to validate it, but nothing yet. :( :(
Good luck with it

All done ;D They have message boards on ancestry, you could put one on there too, an i noticed something about facebook if you are on there.
-
Thanks for signing, I did start a thread on FB. What message boards do you mean ?
Debbie
-
On ancestry you can post things if you go to the tab that says collaborate it drops down with a list, and in the list is message boards. :)
-
Have signed this because I think its definitely a worthwhile cause. Very underrated the work the Land Army girls.
-
Dee,
Thank you xx
-
I don't understand why they didn't award to everyone.... We're all signed up in our house ;D ;D
Milly

Any suggestions folks x

Well done, Debbie; best of luck.

Thanks Pinot,
Can't believe over 800 people have read this and only 76 signed :(
-
Me neither. Commitmentphobes. Come on. It's only a pinprick. Honestly!
;D
Typo corrected. P.
-
Definitely worth taking a few minutes to sign. I've posted the link to the group and petition in facebook on my fb page too. Best of luck :)

Thank you Elaine, hope Santa brings you lots of pressies..lol

I cant believe that people arent signing this either.....
Love the furry purry pic. Is it your cat?
Dee
-
Hi Debbie,
Perhaps people are depending on this first link you gave:
go to www.Number10 .gov.uk
Looking closely you'll spot the typo - a space after Number 10; the second link you posted: http://petitions.number10.gov.uk/Girlpower/- much more direct - works fine. May I humbly suggest that you'd get more signatures if you emended/deleted the first link (with an appropriate note)? Maybe a whole new thread would be better?
Regards,
Pinot :)

Dee
Dee...it's not my cat though I do have two of my own. I have a Chrismassy one but couldn't find it in my hurry to change my pic :)
-
Pinot, thanks for spotting that, have modified original message, hope that works. Now over 1000 people have read it. I need at least 500 before it can go to the house of commons again.
Come on peeps do it for your Mums and Grannies !!
Debbie xx
-
Hi, how did you get on with this? Did you manage to get enought people to sign it?
Migky ;)
-
Hi Mr. Migky,
Deeboneham posted a message in the armed forces forum earlier, unfortunately only 96/7 have signed, quite disappointing but hey ho, nothing ventured etc etc.
Thanks for asking

Just tried to sign the ePetition now and this message appears:-
"During the official campaign period for the General Election the e-Petitions system will be closed to new submissions and signatures. The Government will also not issue responses to petitions during this period. This is to ensure compliance with the requirements of the Civil Service Code on party political neutrality.
Any petitions due to close between the announcement of the General Election and 3 June will have their deadlines extended to 3 June. Petitions will reopen for signatures upon the formation of the Government following the General Election."
Does this mean we can't sign until after 6th May?
-
Hi Tilly,
Just been reading that also, don't know if it's May 6th of June 3rd ?
Maybe somebody on here can clarify this.
Debbie x
-
Hi Debbie
just posted this over on CF but I'll repeat it here :)
I believe the reason that the date of 3 June is given is sheer laziness by the e-petition "gatekeepers" who have just posted a bog standard reply set up ages ago. 3rd June was the very last date by which the government had to have an election under the 5 Year Rule. The fact that it has since been called a month early seems to have escpaed the numpty who stuck up that message.
But knowing civil servants I doubt they will re-open the petition until the 4th June now.
Kyt (aka Amrit ;) )

Seems crystal clear to me.
Reopen for signatures following the election.
Deadlines extended to 3 June (obviously to compensate for the period of suspension).
-
Thanks for that Kyt,
Might send them an email and mention that although, if you hadn't have mentioned it, I wouldn't have known !!

It clearly states that petitions will reopen for signatures upon the formation of the Government following the General Election.
They have granted an extension until 3 June - this is to compensate for the temporary closure of the petitions. ::)
-
Thank you SG for pointing that out to me.
This is one of the reasons that I use these forums, to learn from you experts.
Regards
Debbie
-
I'm no expert, Debbie, I just read the announcement giving it my full attention. There's no harm in asking for clarification, but it's sad to see people throwing insults about when they clearly didn't read the announcement properly. :-\
-
SG,
I am not in the habit of throwing insults about, I do have respect for people, especially when they are trying to help.
-
Indeed, I wasn't suggesting otherwise. :)
-
I'm sure you weren't ;)
-
Glad that's sorted, then.
Pinot ;D ;D

I will sign this as soon as the petition is open to signatures again.
My grandmother was a Land Army Girl, it was part of what defined who she was for the rest of her life. She had such a close bond with the other Land Army pals that they kept in touch, visited, holidayed together for the rest of their lives until, one by one, they passed away.
Recently while on a trip home I visited my mums cousin, he always had a soft spot for my grandma, while there he told me just what she did as a land army girl, I had never realised until then how much hard work was done by these folks.
My grandmother was part of the corps that cut timber. They had to HAND saw trees, right at the level of the ground, none of this 3 feet in the air like the lumber companies do now. He told me a story about how the girls would have to walk over a mile from their camp to the logging site each day, and how on the way trucks full of prisoners of war would be driven past them. The POW's were being taken up to help with the work... but for some reason they got a lift while the land army girls had to hike.
Without the land army we wouldn't be where we are today.
-
Thank you Ceryswyn, ;D
-
I am signing too...my later mother-in-law was a member of the land army in Norhtumberland...I think she should have been recognised for her war effort.
-
Joan,
Thank you for your support, however, instead of re-opening e-petitions after the elections. The powers that be have closed them !!!
I have e-mailed them twice but...guess what, no reply as yet.
If and when they get back to me, I will let you know.
Regards
Debbie x
-
Debbie,
Thank you.
-
Should we start it again? :( It would seem a certain amount of time wasted but perhaps we could start something on Facebook too! ;)
Dee
-
Hi Dee,
That was my first thought but, would people be bothered to sign it a second time ? I would lose all the signatures on it already.
Also that would mean three threads for one topic on Rc, unless some clever mod could merge them ?
I am so hacked off with the twits at No 10, and they haven't even replied yet..surprise surprise !
I will give them till Monday, as I'm quite busy this week but, thanks for replying and I'll keep you updated.
Debbie xx
-
Hopefully it should be still there so this will be an additional one... If we get a group on facebook/Twitter etc with a link then maybe even more people will find it....

With a new Government in place a review is taking place of online services, including e-petitions. We are committed to improving the e-petitions process and are looking at ways of ensuring that it functions as part of a cohesive approach to public debate and transparent government. A full announcement on how we plan to use these and other services across Government will be made as soon as this important work is completed.
Existing e-petitions, submitted to the previous administration, will not be carried forward to the new administration as part of this process. E-petitions that were live at the time of the election announcement on 6 April, when the e-petitions system was suspended, will therefore not be reopened for signatures. We will respond to e-petitions that had exceeded the 500 signature threshold as of 6 April 2010.
We will welcome resubmission on issues of concern to the improved e-petitions system when it is launched later in 2010.
What a bloody cheek !! How many other petitions have now just been discarded ?
VERY ANGRY !
Debbie
-
How frustrating...and rather undemocratic :(
-
Hi Milly,
Undemocratic, Unprofessional and Blooming Unbelievable >:( >:(
Debbie x
-
Not sure about the last one..... it is very believable!
Milly ;D
-
You're quite right Milly, just makes you wonder...what next ?
Debbie x
-
Well I should imagine as much tough stuff as they can get way with while they can still blame the electorate and the Liberals!
Milly
-
I bet its them blooming civil servants (having been one I can say this) not wanting to do anything more than they have to...
Dee
-
I have only just noticed this thread. My mother was in the Land Army (I have lots of photos to prove it ;D) it would have been nice to have had some sort of 'Thank You' from the Government.
She passed away about 10 years ago but I know she would have been very proud to have received a medal if she had been alive.
-
I can't see why they should not be issued with the 1939-45 defence medal, this would be the most fitting recognition IMHO.
Possibly try a campaign on forcesreunited?
I know they'll support the cause on there and they're well known for their campaigning.
-
e-petitions is an easy way for you to influence government policy in the UK. You can create an e-petition about anything that the government is responsible for and if it gets at least 100,000 signatures, it will be eligible for debate in the House of Commons.
I'm sure it was 500 signatures before the present Government were elected !! :((
-
Yes, I heard on r4 that Cameron didn't like the idea!
I meant fr forums might start a campaign and with over 700000 sympathetic ears so to speak you could very easily propel such a petition along via this method.
-
I would really like it if my mother who died in 1996 had received a medal for her time in the Land Army. By what she use to tell me it was no bed of roses.
I have lots of black and white photos of her and her friends in the Land Army one of which is a lady holding up a dead rat !!
