Does anyone have any information about Monks School in Monmouth around 1880?

I believe there was a school in Monk Street (Monks Gate) years ago, I'll take a look at the census.
Priory Street boys school I think always went by that name? and of course there was a priory on the site hundreds of years ago, that's how nearby Monks Gate got it's name.  Fred

The old Priory (next to St Marys, the parish church) used to be a secondary school for boys (maybe girls as well ?) in the 1940, 50's and I think into the 1960's ... but that's not Monk Street, its Priory Street.  Monk Street runs from Whitecross St, past the end of the churchyard, and across the junction of Priory St and Dixton Rd, and uphill towards the girls school, where it changes into Hereford Road !

(If you Google map Monmouth, the names of the roads on it are WRONG ... I know; I live there !)

I'll be in town tomorrow and will ask an archaeologist friend who used to go to the Priory School if he knows of any school in Monk Street in the 1880's ... but I dont think there was one ... he's also got copies of all of Keith Kissacks excellent books about Monmouth which might give the answer (mine are all packed as I'm moving house !)

Hiya Lydart
Yeah Priory Street was always just boys it closed in1974, I left in 1961, but there were lots of private schools around, St James street and Square, Dixton Road, even at the May Hill years ago
I'm wondering if "near" Monmouth might mean the Courtfield Estate at Goodrich where there were monks until recently, a college I believe.  Fred

In 1881 Priory st school was mixed, but only female teachers, no sign of monks here or a school in Monk street.
It was for boys aged 5 to 14 when my dad went there in the 1920's, it later was 7 to 11 year old boys after that.

Lydart are you moving before the snow? yep it's in the stars a bleak winter ahead, well my guess is as good as the weather forecasters
