The 1901 census is not yet indexed but will be added to National Archives, Dublin website in the next few months so you'll be able to search for the family then.

Roy,
Nearest I could find was John Gaston married Annie Paul, father Moses, in Ballymena Baptist Church on 15 Nov 1887. John's father could have been , William, Luke or Robert. The Irish habit of naming the eldest son after the Father's father might indicate Robert.

If the mother was from Dublin the marriage might have taken place there, or even some other county in Ireland.

Aghadowey,
Have checked the Family Search Record site and the only Irish Gaston marriages were Antrim, Down and Londonderry. The one I listed was the closest to the census information.

Emerald Ancestors index shows a Robert Gaston married 1887 Co. Antrim to Cecelia Annie Maria ? (only marriage in 1887 for a Robert Gaston).

Aghadowey,
1887 marriage was to John Gaston. Using Ancestry Ireland, Robert was one of three possibilities for John's father.

Understand that but do we yet know the Christian name of Mrs. Annie Gaston's husband? To find that important detail it might be nec. to get one of the children's birth certificates which will list both the father's full name and mother's maiden name.

Aghadowey,
Very true. However using the surname Gaston, the marriage which I gave was the only Ann/Annie ? which was near 1886. The next two were Annie Grey in 1894 or Ann Forbes in 1872.

Certainly Annie Paul is an option for the marriage but as I say earlier the marriage could have taken place in Dublin or anywhere else. When Roy gets more information from child's brth certificate of other sources he can post it here.

Hi
Thanks for posting your Gaston details.  Are we chasing the same family I wonder?  I am researching a Robert John & Annie Gaston, who married about 1886, and had 13 children born to them of which only 6 were still living by 1911.  Robert John Gaston was also deceased by the 1911 census so I have no further information on him.  Annie, however was listed as widow, head of the household, born c.1871, living with her were Robert John, son, obviously named after his father, b.1889; Sarah Kathleen, daughter, b. c.1893; Godfrey, b. c.1896; Mathew, son, b. c.1899; David, son, b. c.1902 and Leslie, b. c.1907, all born County Antrim.  If you recognised any of the above names then I would be pleased to correspond and exchange information.

Known Gaston family members alive today reside in the Belfast area.

Regards, Roy

Hello Roy,

I see you have sent me a message, but it seems I have no way to respond. My friend has very little information on her family, and I am unfamiliar with researching in Ireland. She lives in Canada now, but would like to know more about her ancestors.

Perhaps if you post the details of your friend's Gaston family we will be able to help.

Starting with the details in the first post on this thread, here's a link to the 1911 census- note that the family is Church of Ireland but were Presbyterian in 1901:
www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Antrim/Woodvale/Mayo_Street/179507
The 1901 census is now online and here's the same family then- notice that wife Annie's birthplace is now given as Cork City, not Dublin as in 1911 census:

Hi Kathy

It would be nice to know your friends name rather than address her as your friend?

For starters I will introduce myself; my name is Royston Smith, aged **, retired, married to ** and we live in Caerphilly, South Wales, UK.  I have a keen interest in family history and have been researching my main line of Smith and its many branches for the past 40 years.  I have also researched my wife’s family and combined we have a considerable family tree.

I am now researching the name Gaston for in April 2009 our daughter **

** is descended from Leslie Gaston, brother of David and descended from the same Robert and Annie; hence ** and your friend are distant cousins.  It is unfortunate that a lot of Irish records were destroyed which makes it difficult to find who Robert’s father was so we are stuck at the same point in our respective searches for the time being.

The information I have comes from **’s father **, who has written the family tree from memory and apart from Davison & Gaston contain the surnames of Smith, Haggard, Joss, and Hadden.

I note there are Gaston, Marriages 244, Births 62 and Deaths 43 listed on the internet site Emerald Ancestors which is a pay per view source and one for the future once I have extracted all details from family members.

In the meantime this is a brief of our Gaston line

Robert John Gaston = Annie
•   Robert John born c.1890
•   Sarah K born c.1894
•   Godfrey born c.1897
•   Mathew born c.1899
•   David born c.1902
•   Leslie born c.1904

Leslie Gaston = *** 7 children

Well Kathy, I will leave it there for now, I hope your friend will find it useful and hope she will share her family line.  Hopefully we can help each other and take our line back further.

Regards
Roy

Roy,
From your latest post I think that Aghadowey's earlier Cecelia Annie Marie Cunning now looks like Robert's wife. They married on 8 Jun 1887 in Agnes St. Presbyterian Church, Shankill, Belfast. The fathers were Robert Gaston and Robert Cunning.
