Title: Sarah Keates - Help
Post by: vbond on Saturday 07 November 09 00:34 GMT (UK)
Sarah Keates married Edward Stoodley on 17 May 1743 at Winterborne Whitechurch

Edward was of Milton (Abbas)
Sarah was of Corfe Castle.

They subsequently lived in Milton Abbas.

I have reason to believe that Edward was in his mid 50s - therefore Sarah may not have been a young person.

Can anybody shed some light on Sarah's life either before or after this event?

Hello Vbond,

To have got so far back, you've probably already seen this - the Dorset OPC have
Corfe Castle baptisms right back to 1653.  If you search baptisms 1700-1739, there is a Sarah Keete baptised by a John Keete in 1715.

It may also be that Sarah Keates had been married previously - in the marriages section in 1739, there is a marriage of a Thomas Keates to Sarah Darby.

Good luck,

Yorkslass,

Thanks for the reply. I had not actually seen either of those. :)

A little over six months after their marriage Edward made a will (in which he states he's ill) and leaves Sarah with some specific obligations, which lead me to believe that the marriage may have been more convenient/financial than personal.

So an older spinster or a widowed soldier's wife would easily fit into that into that scenario. Or maybe he was just suave.

I was rather hoping somebody might have something on the lady after she was married. ???
