Hi
This is a photo of my 3x great grandmother and hopefully my great grandfather.
To fit, then this photo would be taken around 1890 with the woman being 69 and the boy 4.
Any thoughts?
Thanks

Hello Leon
Well this sort of fits that date but the lady is wearing a very stylised outfit. It appears she may have an early gigot sleeve to her bodice which would fit an 1893-5 date, her hat also. The boy's sailor suit was also popular throughout the 90's & well into the 20th.C.It's possible this could be early 20th.C so if you have the original can you rescan it in colour & show all of the cardstock & the back.

Hi Jim
This photo came from my uncle so I will ask if he has the original. If so I will ask for a colour scan of front and back.
I have a death record for Hannah in mid 1891, so I was pitching this photo very late in her life.

Jim
Still waiting for a colour scan but should be able to obtain one.
To help build the case, what do you think of about the date of this photo which has the same woman but younger.
Let me know what you think.
Leon

You may have to have a rethink, this one is around 1907-10.

So that put's the first photo at around 1925ish???
Feasible?

I was just browsing through the photo's when i saw this one and i was wondering why the mans head was above the gentleman who is standing, and also the gentleman who is sitting appears to have something wrong with his hands.
I hope you don't mind me asking.

1st. photo around the date I gave earlier..

Hi Jim
Can you please clarify for me.
You think the photo with the little boy is 1893-1895 and the wedding shot is 1907-1910?
If I understand that correctly then I can only assume you do not think the same woman appears in both photos?
thanks

Just chipping in to agree with Jim that the above photo is around 1907-1910ish...my own thinking is toward the earlier part of that period because hat brims got wider as 1910 approached, and anyone in a wedding photo is going to be at the very peak of fashion. My own wedding excepted... :P ;D ;D
Cheers,

Hi China
Thanks for that.
I'm not letting you get away that lightly though. :)
1. Do you believe it is the same woman in both photos?
2. what is your date estimate for the second photo?
Thanks for the help

My own wedding excepted
I bet you still looked beautiful ;)
At present I would say the 1st. photo is the early part of the 1890's
but need to see all of the original back & front in colour.
The 2nd. is as China says 1907-10.
The 2 women look remarkably similar, could they be mother & daughter
or Aunt & Niece perhaps?

Here are the colour scans of the front and back.
The photo has been extricated from an album and we clearly now have a bit more of the story. The hand writing is that of my late grandmother and Albert was her brother.
If this written note is accurate then it puts this picture around 1910.
Thoughts?

Well I'm glad I covered both bases, this was taken post 1902 as that's when correspondence was allowed on the backs of these, although she does look a bit old fashioned in this, and if this is 1910 very old fashioned.
Comparing the 2 which we now know where taken roughly the same time you can see the very different styles of the 2 related women, the younger being much more up to date.
On the back it reads Grandmother Redfern & Alfred, this is where I get confused as you say this was written by your Grandmother & Albert was her brother.Do you mean Alfred? if so this would make her your Great Greatgrandmother.
She looks in her 60's so,do you have a 1xGreatgrandmother Redfern born c.1845/1850 & did she have a daughter born mid 1870's (ish).

Stepping in to say: If it is her grandmother's grandmother she would be her 2x-great grandmother. Right?
I'm loving browsing the photos and seeing all the amazing work people are able to do with them.
-
Yes, I meant Alfred. Just rushing to get it posted earlier.
If this is my 2x great grandmother then she was born in 1852, which looks right.
She only had one daughter who was born in 1879 which would make her late twenties in the wedding photo. She looks older than that to me.
If she really is that young then what could her relationship be to the others in the photo?
It looks like a parents of the groom/bride to me, but that can't work???
Really confused now.

Without any other contenders I think we'd have to say this is her daughter aged about 30 although I agree she does look older. She also may be wearing a wedding ring but I'm not that sure so,when did she marry.
The others in the photo may be friends rather than family.
