Title: William POLLARD and Caroline GEORGE
Post by: janne on Wednesday 04 November 09 06:02 GMT (UK)
I am looking for information on William Pollard and Caroline George.
Information I have is that William Pollard was born in Endellion, Cornwall c.1819 believe married to Caroline George born c.1824 married in 1844 in Redruth.  But need confirmation that this is the William and Caroline who came to Australia on the Rajah in 1847 with son William Henry born in 1846.
I am unable to confirm William's birthdate or marriage.
I believe William's parents were Samuel Pollard and Anne (Ann), but have no further information.

Regards,
Janne

Hi Janne,

I think the first step is to purchase the marriage cert I mentioned here

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,2153.90.html

Mar 1/4 1844 Redruth 9 252

Caroline GEORGE (possible spouse William POLLANT)

for fathers names

If you are correct

William POLLARD was baptised Endellion 29 Sep 1819 parents Samuel and Anne

The only Samuel and Ann combination I am spotting is in Constantine 1815

Title: William POLLARD from Endellion/Redruth

Hi

I have been able in the last few hours to validate some information about William Pollard born 14 July 1819 in the Parish of Endellion, Cornwall. I have been given information through a lookup last year that found his birth notice, listing his parents as Samuel and Anne. It is his parents I am interested in, now that I know this is the William Pollard I was looking for.

William's father kept a private school in Endellion and this is where William was educated until at the age of 14 he became an apprentice Carpenter in Redruth, then a Journeyman. He subsequently married Caroline George in 1844 then came to Australia on the Rajah in 1847 with son William Henry Pollard. William had a brother (possibly Henry) who came to Australia before William and Caroline did.

I was wondering if anyone could help me with the parentage of William. Particularly his mother's maiden name so I can continue my search. Were records about schools in Endellion kept for the 1820/1830's?

Any help is appreciated

Regards
Marnie

Hi Marnie,

I have merged your thread with Janne's to avoid any duplication of efforts.

I note he dates do not agree although you suggest born 14 Jul which could fit with baptised 29 Sep. (I note 14 July 1819 did appear in BISA but as the unformation is in part submitted it does need to be verified.)

Henry POLLARD was baptised St Endellion 7 Sep 1817 to Samuel and Anne

Do you know what became of him in Australia? Depending on the State he settled in his certs may reveal more.

There is a John Evans POLLARD baptised Falmouth 13 July 1817 (born 4 June) to Samuel and Ann

If he is the same person who married married in Kensington in 1851 he was a Naval Officer. His father Samuel was a Builder.

It appears there are at least two Samuel and Ann(e)'s in Cornwall at this time.

No pollard deaths showing in Endellion 1813-1837

I would expect if there are any records for this school they would be held by the Cornwall Records Office. It may pay you to contact them - Nothing coming up on their website.

Hi

The information I have for William Pollard came from a letter sent to me when I was young from a Great Uncle who found or had a copy of an interview that was given by William Pollard in 1907, the year before he died. All the information I am going by has come from that interview.

I am sure that Henry Pollard you have found is indeed William's brother. In the interview, William said that his brother had come to Australia a few years before he did.

William settled in South Australia in 1847 and did mining, carpentry and gardening before passing away in 1908. We have extensive information about the family since him, but tracing his parents is our next challenge.

Thank you for your help
