Hello
I have recently started tracing my family tree on my fathers side whose surname was Wait, I have found out that his father was Henry Wait who was born in 1902 in Newhaven, East Sussex, his parents were called Henry Wait and Theresa Eilingsfeld and that is where my trail ends. If anyone can help me find out any further information or where to try to find the information that would be great.
Thanks

Shazzy i live in Newhaven, and Petmas on here works at Newhaven Museum What do you want to know?
-
It would be helpful if you could provide some additional information.
Are you saying that Henry Wait had a father Henry Wait and that the latter married Theresa Eilingsfeld ? If they married, do you know where and when the marriage took place? At present, I can't see a marriage between a Henry Wait and a Theresa Eilingsfeld in England or Wales.
Have you found anyone in the censuses?
Do you have any additional dates or places for relevant events?

Could this be his birth?

Hi Dee,
The marriage for that Henry William Wait appears to be as follows:
Jun 1926 qtr - Newhaven
EAGER Elsie V 2b 496
WAIT Henry W 2b 496

I'll have a look in the museum tomorrow, I have a gut feeling that whilst there are no Eilingfelds I think there might be Eisingfeld. Pete

Hi
Thanks for your reply, in the 1911 census Henry Wait and Theresa Eilingsfield, I assume they got married in Lewes or Brighton,. They had 2 sons Henry William Wait (my grandfather) and Francis Richard Wait. Henry Wait (Father) was born in Bradwell Grove around 1849 and Theresa Eva Eilingsfeld was born in Oxfordshire around 1869, as I say that is where my trail ends.

Hi Nigel
Thanks for your reply, I found in the 1911 census Henry Wait and Theresa Eilingsfield, I assume they got married in Lewes or Brighton,. My grandfather Henry William Wait married Elsie Victoria Eager in 1926.

Hi Dee
The information you have about my Great Grand Father is correct as I have information that he was a Coal Merchant and I didn't realise he was a widower. That is another path I have to follow to find out who is first wife was. In the 1911 Census he was married to his second wife Theresa Eilingsfield for 9 years.
Thanks

Hi Petmas
If you could have a look for me that would be a great help, it could be that her surname was spelt incorrectly.
Thanks
Shazzy

I found this one on my oddsnsods database, one of yours?

Here is Henry 1891 Census and a possible marriage for him
RG12 / 800 / 56 / 45
46 General Shop, South Road, Newhaven
Henry Wait / head / 41 / Carter b. Oxfordshire
Ann / wife / 49 / b. Alciston, Susses
Mary A Beilman / stepdau / 24 b. Newhaven
Marriage
Henry Wait / Ann Bulman
March 1884 / Lewes
Vol No: 2b / Page No: 284
There is a bit of a discrepancy with the spelling of Bulman/Beilman

I could be reading this incorrectly, but the actual 1911 census image looks like it says Theresa was born in Germany. (unless that says Guernsey???)
This might be why her name is giving us such problems.

Hi Petmas
That name doesn't ring any bells, but seeing as I can't find any further relatives except my great grand parents whose to say.
Thanks
Shazzy
-
Hi Dee
That could be a possibility as being his first wife I shall investigate further, as he married his second wife in 1902.
Thanks
Shazzy
-
Shazzy, is it possible that they never married? I've searched GRO and there is no marriage for Henry Wait.
Henry is clearly traceable on all previous Census. Do you have either of their children's birth certificates with the spelling of Theresa surname?
Dee
-
Hi Dee
I have my grand fathers birth certificate which is dated 30th September 1902 and his mother is down as Theresa Eva Wait formerly Eilingsfeld.
Thanks
Shazzy
-
Hi Maureen
Thanks for your question, I do believe that I do have relatives in Germany which could be on her side, but it says that she was born in Oxfordshire.
Thanks
Shazzy
-
That marriage in Marylebone Dec.Qtr 1901 1a 1205 between Henry WEST and Theresa Eva Eilingsfeld!!!! Do you suppose Wait got scrambled into WEST somehow???
Maureen in NY
-
Maurenn, you just beat me to it. I also found it. I think it might be what Shazzy is looking for.
Dee
-
Shazzy-hate to disagree, but are you looking at the actual image???? It says Germany. Bradwell Grove Oxfordshire is on 2 lines, but nicely bracketed-that's Henry's place of birth, not hers.
Maureen
-
Hi Maureen
Funny you should say that because I have the marriage certificate stating that the surname is West so they could have got it wrong, it has his profession as Coal Merchant which is correct, but it has his father as being Richard West Deceased who was a sheppard.
Theresa Eva Eilingsfeld whose father was Josef Eilingsfeld Deceased who was a baker.
And that is as far as I have got, my trail ends here.
Thanks
Shazzy
-
Hi Maureen
All I have is that Theresa was born in Oxfordshire where I don't know, Henry was born as you say in Bradwell Grove.
Thanks
Shazzy
-
Hi Maureen
Where did you find out that theresa was born in Germany, because I haven't come across this.
