My great grandmother Lillian Bentley (sometimes spelt with one L in middle) died on 23 July 1904 in Adelaide. At the time she had 6 children. I have been unable to find her burial but was told she was at West terrace. I went there on a recent trip to Adelaide and she is not on the "touch screen' data base. I would love to know where she is buried.
On her death her 6 children were split up and it seems her husband Wilfred Bentley ( a name assumed by Bruno Alfred August HIntz from the Barossa) moved away in the next few years or so. I have been unable to find his whereabouts or death details. He was born Bruno Hintz on 23 august 1870 at Gawler and married Lillian (nee Dollman) in melbourne in 1897.
My grandmother Florence Ethel Bentley (Florrie) married Arthur Edward Rains in 1911 and stated on her wedding certificate that her father's whereabouts were unknown. Help appreciated. Jess

As you have Lilian's date of death you could ring the Adelaide Cemeteries Authority that manages West Terrace and other cemeteries. It may help them locate her burial in their register. Perhaps you could ask them to check the other cemeteries they manage as well.

Contact details on website.
I note that Lilian died in hospital...do you have her death cert? - Unfortunately in 1904 place of burial was not included on death certificates.

Thanks Cando,
I do have her death certificate. I will contact the cemetery as you suggest.
I have a letter which pretty much proves that Lillian and Wilfred were together and all the 4 children born out of wedlock were his. (even though the certs say father unknown.)
I really wish I knew what became of him.
Any clues on how to find who raised the children? I know the boys were 'adopted' Herbert by the Reynolds family and Lionel by his 'aunt' who married a Winton. My grandmother, Florence knew very little about her family and in the 1920s contacted the Salvation army about it. I am wondering if they ran an orphanage in Adelaide.

Hi Jess - As I posted, the name Bentley as a 2nd given name points to Bruno/Wilfred as the father as well.
Perhaps this may help

Do you know the name of the family who cared for Florence?

Wow, thanks for that site. that will keep me busy for a while. :) :)
I don't know who looked after her. I did find on the Australian digital newspapers in the Advertiser of 2 jan 1906, the "Court happy Home" conducted a picnic day and in the list of prize winners, a FLorrie Bentley won the 'recitation for girls'. It may just be a coincidence but is a good lead to follow now I have that web site. Thank you.
