Hi, I have been at the local library today looking at census records.
I have Henry and Mary (Mother) GUNTER, with their daughter Mary in 1881, age 20
Then in 1891, Henry and Mary have a lodger by the name of Frederick Oliver.
I havn't been able to find a marriage for Mary (daughter) between 1881 - 1891. Or maybe she died?
Can anyone please shed some light.
Mary (Mother) died 1897, and Henry died 1910, but in the 1901 census shows him in the Reading Union Workhouse as an Inmate age 75.
Would really love to know what happened to her, and why Henry was in the workhouse (sounds terrible)
Cheers Gail.

I couldn't sopt either a marriage or a death but
Just a possibility of a mis-enumeration
RG12 969 11 18
Newbury Berkshire
George Ashdown M H 38 Plush? Manufacturer Suffolk Hadleigh
Frederick do M?? Son 13 Scholar Berks Newbury
William do Son 11 do do do
Mary Ashdown Cousin S 30 Draper Asst Surrey Brixton
May Waters Serv S 20 Berks Newbury
So.... either of her parents have a sibling who married an Ashdown or was it her mothers maiden name?
-
Hi, Mothers maiden name was ALLOWAY, she and Henry married in 1850.
There is an older son called John, he came to NZ (time ?) but married in 1874. He is my Great Great Grandfather, and I know a wee bit about him. But I would really love to know about his sister.
Has Mary as a dressmaker in the 1881 census.

Maybe she's not on census because she decided to emigrate too?
-
I thought of that too, but thus far cant find any record of her coming to NZ, or a marriage or death in NZ.
Information for this family seems to come to me in fits and starts lol. But any info is gr8 info. :)
Cheers, Gail

Have you seen the one who is a lodger in Newcastle in 1891
she gives her age as 26 so she's fibbing a bit (or someone is guessing) but the place of birth as Brixton is right as is the occupation of dressmaker

Hi DebbieG
No I didn't see that, I will be off to the library first thing monday!
Is Newcastle near the other areas they have been in? Please excuse my lack of knowledge in England geography, one thing I want to get is a really detailed map.
Thanks.

No Gails
I am afraid that Newcastle is about 200 miles from London but as she gives her birthplace as Brixton Hill, London she is a long way from home whoever she is.

I Cannot help you regarding Mary, but I can help if you want it, going back
Your Henry Gunter was bapt St. Stephens Baughurst 29 Oct 1829 Parents David c1794 & Jane
On Census 1851 & 61 David gives his birth location as Aldermaston, which means he links to my Gunter ancestors, unfortunately I cannot find a baptism for him to link him and his descendants to a particular Branch. I realise I can add him to my database, as I am pretty sure (95%) the Mary Alloway he married is the daughter of Jacob Alloway & Hannah West and I have that line of Alloway (formerly known as Scot) back to the early 1700's.
Regarding 1901 in those days the workhouse was also the infirmary, and given his age, he may well have been there for health reasons especially if Mary was working away from the area. The workhouse evolved to the Battle Hospital (Where I was born) and now sadly a housing estate.

Hi Daisy and Matt,
Thank you for the info.
Yes it does look like my Mary, I guess now I need to start looking at the TERRY family.
I "googled" Aldermaston not so long ago, it looks like a lovely place, I wonder if any GUNTER's still live there? Also Baughurst and Tadley.
Regards,
Gail.

My great grandmother on my mothers side , Minnie Matilda May Gunter, was born in Tadley in 1899.
Wonder if she is related to David & Jane?
(thinking out loud)
:)

Hi cripesamighty,
Merry Christmas.
She may well be, ;D Just to confuse the matter there are 2 Davids born about the same time in Aldermaston, one has a wonderful recorded history and the other is mine lol :D So I am always on the lookout for any scrap of information I can find.
I will keep you posted if/when I find out more .......
Regards,
Gail.

Gail use www.streetmap.co.uk and you can enter places or streets.
If you pan out you can get a rough idea of our geography.
Even people who have lived there all their lives didn't listen to their geography teacher ;D

Thank you Gails.
The county boarders have changed since those days..so Tadley is probably in Berkshire now....but Baughurst is also given as birth place for my great grandmother.
She was the daughter of Thomas Dance Gunter & Clara Rachael Marshall.
They married in Kingsclere..and were living at The Drove, Crux Easton, Whitchurch, Highclere, Kingsclere Hampshire, England in 1911.
Her birth gro is
Births Sep 1899
Gunter Minnie Matilda M Kingsclere 2c 225
Her line goes back to Sir Peter in 1034/5
Through the Gunters of Aldermaston and then those of Kintbury..then back into Wales.

The county boarders have changed since those days..so Tadley is probably in Berkshire now....
The county border still runs between Tadley (Hants) and Aldermaston (Berks) though on a slightly different line. Tadley has grown and taken over a narrow strip of Aldermaston.
-
Thank you newburychap for your input.
We forget that some of the things we talk about are many years ago...and things have changed since then.. :-).
I wonder if The Drove, Crux Easton is still there?..anyone have a photo? ;)
I never meet any of my grandparents..I didn't even know their names till last year!. :(
Did I hear the Alloway name mentioned? ???
I also have the Alloway name in my tree..Moses Alloway c.1762..married Mary Gunter
They had a son Moses b.1787 who married an Elizabeth Wallace in Scotland in 1818.
Ring any bells with anyone!
Regards
Paul

Hi cripesamighty
Yep you sure did here the name Alloway. I have some in my family tree, and they are also connected a way back in the Gunter tree.
I will PM you some info when I get home as I am just rushing out the door!

Gail.
