Hi
I wonder if someone would be kind enough to try and find a Walter Hill and his new wife Jane (nee Smith) in the 1851 census.
Walter worked as a gardener at Kew Gardens in Richmond from 1843 and the couple immigrated to Australia in 1852-53, so I hope he was still at Kew in 1851. Walter was born in Scotland on 31 Dec 1819 but the one I'm really interested in is his wife I'd love to know where & when she was born to help narrow down a search for her mother's family (Jane Brunton).
many thanks

Free BMDs kept jamming up on me but I've just managed to check & they were married in Sept Qtr 1849 in Kensington so at least I can order a marriage cert now.
Maybe there was another Walter Hill?? or his wife was living somewhere else at the time?
Actually their daughter Ann was born in Apr 1850 if that helps - surely mother & daughter would be together??

Well, I can't see another Walter Hill, gardener at Kew, born Scotland and ca. 30!! :P
Not a family Jane/Walter/Ann, or even an Ann Hill born 1850 with a mother Jane but no father present. Where exactly was Ann born?

Thank you Tati!
This is great - All I have for Ann Hill (wikipedia again) is that she was born 25 Apr 1850 in England.
So now I need to find Jane as dau of a John Smith.
I wonder if he is in the 1841 census or his dau Jane??
I have to fly to work now - bother!
Thank you so much for this though - I really appreciate it.

Sorry, but searching the 1841 census (which doesn't even show relationships) for a John and Jane Smith in Middlesex without even knowing their ages seems impossible to me :(
-
Of course.
Thank you very much for all you have done though Tati - every bit of information helps.

Hi, not sure if you are still looking for this. I think the gardener at Kew is the correct Walter Hill, and he has been incorrectly marked as Unmarried. I have found a Jane Hill with daughter Ann in the Orkney Islands with her brother John Smith. Hope this is helpful.

1851 census St Peters Orkney Saint Margarets Hope; John Smith, Jane Hill, Ann Hill, all born Larbert, Stirlingshire, Scotland. John Smith age 27 unmarried, licentiate of College of Surgeons, Edinbor (sic: Edinburgh) General Practitioner. I would be interested in any information you have gleaned on Walter Hill. I have a copy of his biography off Australian Dictionary of Biography. :)
