Hi and welcome to rootschat
Is there a reason for this being on the Northumberland board? Did the family live here later? I see you have duplicated it on three other boards. It is always best to post on one board only as otherwise it can cause confusion and most people look at all of them. You will soon get the hang of how it works. Which is the most relevant board?
Regards
Andrea

I think I will delete some of your other posts and leave it on this and the Kent board. Lots of tips about research on the Beginners' Board.

There are numerous Venus families in Shields mostly seamen in the coasting trade, and mostly born thereabouts, but one family, John Venus and sons were block and mast makers in Newcastle.
I notice that Aaron and Daniel Venus of Crayford were ship chandlers and there is a Ralph Venus a ropemaker at Rochester who was born in Newcastle 1832 and had married a locally born wife.
All the businesses are associated with shipping.
Hope this is of use, Peter

Thanks for the reply Peter
I know that there was a lot of Venus's around the sheilds & Tynemouth area and that they had links to the shipping industrys, i do work at Tynemouth Priory and there is three graves belonging to Venus's from the area, i do not have there names but will get them, the custodian at the priory says they had to have been high up in the comunity to be elagible for burriall in the priory grave yard and they had links to the shippping industrys
Aaron Venus was my 3xG grandfarther born in kent, crayford area and Danial was his older brother.
the 1851 census shows Aaron age 14 working i paper mill, then the 1861 census shows Aaron as a mariner and Danial was boarding at Aarons house, and the 71 census aaron is not preasant at the family home.
Could you please shed more light onto the two brothers as ship chandlers, mebies this was how Aaron became a Mariner
Many Thanks
Richard

My profuse apologies Richard. I misread the census image. It was the Venus brother's neighbour who was the chandler.
Perhaps the northern Venus families were just coincidence. Though Aaron married a wife from Deptford in Sunderland, there was a constant to and fro of small colliers between the NE and the Thames, probably he sailed on one.
In 1862 Ralph Venus was master of the innovative iron schooner QED of Newcastle. George Venus was master of the brig Pocahontas of North Shields, and an unidentified Venus master of the barque Keepsake of Sunderland. All colliers. I notice Joseph Venus of Maidstone was mate of the spritsail barge Clifford but she wouldn't reach as far as Sunderland.
If Aaron was alive in 1871 he should be included on the census in Vessels unless he sailed deep sea.

Hi
Sorry to link onto this post, but Im looking for the Venus family in Tynemouth and am struggling a bit!
I have a John Venus bn 1810 who married Margaret Cowell and had children in 1833 and 1835, but I cant find him on any census, and his wife remarries in 1840.
Johns parents appear to be Jacob Scott Venus (bn 1770 Tynemouth) and Margaret Taylor, but other than that, I cant find anything about the family.
Do you know if these names have come up in the info you have seen? Any help would be much appreciated!
thanks :)

I suppose you have ruled out John Venus the block & mast maker b N Shields 1890, wife Mary b Embleton. The only other J Venus I have is the owner and master of the 29 year old Whitby-built brig Aquilon 179 tons, in the North sea trade in 1815. Of course the J might stand for Jacob as well as John.
Yours Peter

I have that both Jacob Scott Venus and Margaret Taylor were natives of "this parish" as on the transcript of the children's baptisms. Jacob was a Shipwright.
There is a burial of a Margaret Venus, age 55, of Liddell St 27 Oct 1839. No John Venus burial up to 1839 in Tynemouth Christ Church.
Also of interest will be the burial of Jacob Venus, age 77, Of North Shields 13 Oct 1818, and Sarah Venus, age 87, N. Shields, 30 May 1825.

thanks for the help - I didnt have the deaths of Jacob or Margaret (jacob scott venus' parents).
I guess John was in shipping, but cant find him anywahere. His wife (Margaret Cowell then venus) remarries in 1840 and is shown with her children in further census with her new husband, but I havent sent for the cert yet to see if she is shown as a widow.
thanks again!

Hello to Everyone
I am a direct descendant of John (block and mast maker) and Ann Venus listed in the 1881 census in Byker on Albion Street. My Father was James Venus, born to Ruth Venus in Byker in 1921.
I was amazed to find so much information so quickly in the census records
I have not gone any further back in the records. I would very much welcome any other information.
Regards, Clare Venus

Hi Clare
I am directly descended from Ralph Venus who is your John's brother! Therefore our common ancestors are Ralph and John's parents, John and Mary Venus nee Elliott.

I am new to this site.Daniel Venus was my grandfather, aaron venus my ggrandfather and thomas venus my gggrandfather.Thomas Venus married a Charlotte Watson from Orpington. Aaron Venus married Mary Anne Nevans from Sunderland. Daniel's wife was an Emily Anderson and both he his wife and his parents are buried in Sunderland Road Cemetry. There is quite an imposing grave for Daniel but his parents grave is unnmarked.I have not as yet confirmed the birth place and parentage of Thomas Venus of St Mary Cray. My uncle was Aaron David Saxby Venus. I am of course interested in any of the Venus clan who have more information.
