Lookup request:
The online index gives the above names as passengers on the "George Marshall", arriving Apr 1855 (Port B, Fiche 009, Page 005). I have been told that George and Solomon were the brothers of my g.g.grandfather Charles HALES (1822-98), who was a Wheelwright by profession.
I'd be very interested to know whether the "Chas" on this ship was my Charles. He spent most of his life in Hempstead, Essex, England, but there is a gap in his children's births between 1854 and 1858 - so it's possible that he went to Australia in 1855, but quickly returned.
So if anyone could look up the fiche and see if there's further info about Chas, I'd be most grateful!

David,
Information from manifest for "George Marshall" the Chas Hales listed was age 32 - English - occupation - grocer.
He was travelling with Geo Hales age 29 - occupation - tailor.
Solomon Hales - age 21 - occ - baker.
Hope this helps.

Sarra - many thanks!
The ages match my other information, but the occupations of Charles, George and Solomon don't exactly fit. Their father was a grocer, but Charles's occupation was definitely a Wheelwright on his marriage certificate in 1850 and the 1851 and 1861 England censuses.
In the 1851 census, George was a "Baker of bread" and Solomon was an Assistant to a Master Draper. So perhaps the manifest mixed those two up? (An Australian contact tells me that they both stayed in Australia.)
Is there any indication that the three were travelling together (consistent with them being brothers), or is the list in alphabetical order anyway?

Thanks, Raylen :). They are indeed the brothers of my g.g. grandfather Charles. Their father was William HALES and their mother Harriet/Harriott, etc STUBBINGS. Their ages are about right, too.
There was an older brother John (Alexander) HALES (d. 1910) who also emigrated to Australia, probably in 1852. He was a carpenter by trade. My Australian contact is a descendant of his.

David
Definitely all (three) travelling together I would say.
Have attached part of the manifest for you to look at. Going by what you have posted about their occupations it does seem as though someone got it mixed up.

Sarra - that's great - thanks very much indeed!

Assuming it was my g.g.grandfather Charles HALES who arrived in Melbourne on the "George Marshall" in Apr 1855, he must have returned to England between 1855 and 1857.
I've searched PROV's "Index to Outward Passengers to Interstate, UK, NZ and Foreign Ports 1852-1896", but there's no likely person there, unless it's the Charles HALE (19) on the "Swiftsure", Apr 1857 - though the age is badly wrong (it should be 34/35).
(The surname HALES was often mis-spelled: I've tried HAY*/HAI* etc, as well.)
I've also tried the other websites on RootsChat's "VICTORIA RESOURCES/Passenger Lists and Shipping" without success. Does anyone have any other suggestions for passenger lists from Melbourne to England between 1855-7, please?
