Hello all from Melbourne Australia
I am banging my head again.
I need help with any sort of information about Welney - church, BMD transcripts, village life or references 1800+, places to contact for further help - anything.
I know this is where my ancestor was born in 1815 - from an IGI transcript that no longer is there - and nothing else.
The surnames I am interested in are RUMBLE and KETTLE.
:) I am smiling

On Freereg there are some Rumbles but no Kettles that I could find. ( a some what amusing sentence I have just realised, sorry about that)
All events are at St Mary the Virgin Church Welney.

John bp 3/11/1811 Father William Mother Elizabeth
Marriages 18/10/1787

Witnesses Adam Blackwell and Gabriel Scott
Bride and Groom signed with a mark
25/3/1811

I hope this might be helpful.

I note on the 1851 Census that there is a William Rumble b.1815 Welney - is this your ancester?
Since Welney is on the border with Cambridgeshire there seems to be some confusion over which county it is in - on the census it shows both.
There are submitted entries on the Cambs. IGI showing that William was born/baptised 20/8/1815 Welney, son of Robert and Catherine. Robert Rumble married Catherine Hurst 20/11/1804 Welney. Again from submitted entries Robert is shown bc.1785 Wenley, son of John and Elizabeth Lord - wonder is this surname should read Leeds. Perhaps Robert was born prior to the marriage.
They seem to be the only Rumble family that were in Welney.

Many thanks for putting in the time to find this information for me.
My interest is Mary Rumble born 1815 Welney - father Samuel - mother Sarah.
This was on the IGI then disappeared.
Somehow I have discovered Sarah's surname was Kettle but may be Kiddle as this seems to be a commoner surname for the area.
Was the earlier church in Welney still called St Marys?
Mary married a King [surname not title or I wouldn't be having all this trouble] perhaps in Swaffham about 1835 but have not found any record of this.
I think Samuel dies in Swaffham Bridewell but do not know how to find where any existing records may be. I have been told the surgeons reports listed deaths.
many questions :) :)

Mary Rumble's baptism is still on the IGI - bp.7/1/1815 Welney, dau. of Samuel and Sarah, as was a sibling's - Maria bp.28/1/1817.
Samuel Rumble married Sarah Keddle 16/8/1814 Welney (St. Mary the Virgin).
It seems that between 1817 and 1822 the family moved to Northwold, Norfolk which is close by. On 1/12/1822 3 daughters were baptised on the same day - Matilda, Hannah and Maria - shown as dau.'s of Samuel and Sarah Kettle. I feel sure that this is the same Samuel and Sarah and that the surname is probably Keddle and not Kettle.
In 1851 - at Northwold - Samuel is living with married dau. Matilda (now Oliver) and her family. He is shown as bc.1787 Northwold. However, Northwold doesn't seem to be well covered on-line I'm afraid and it may well mean a check of the original parish records to pursue him further.
You say Mary married a Mr. King - however, I can't find a Mary King born Welney on the census so what happened to her after she married? What was her husband full name?

No Mary Rumble (or any variant spelling) marrying a man named King on the Norfolk marriage index 1801-1837

Again a thank you for all the generous help. :) :)
Every snippet of information does hejp build up a picture of thiese people.
I often wonder what the ancestors would think about all this 'prying' into their life.

Hi Annette,
To clear some things up for you , we know that Mary was a convict transported to Tasmania and also her mother Sarah was a convict transported to NSW. Mary left behind husband and 1 son. We don' have the husbands name only "King".
Now you have given me info on what happened to Samuel. Thanks

Thank you for thinking of this update but I did have a PM from Penshurst explaining all. However, I understand Mary was a widow with one child so no living husband left behind.
